ok..i went to this weird muslim wedding where i saw the bride leaving her home and she was throwing rice behind…what is the significance of this?..i thought this was a hindu tradition?.. is it now acceptable in muslims too?..
It was just weird to see this…i asked a couple of people there.. and none of them actually gave me a satisfactory answer…
has anyone else came across this kind of ritual??I believe it was in rukhsati..
There is another ritual in which people raise Qur'an over the head of bride during rukhsati...."Qur'an kay saaye main rukhsat hona". A very useless activity in my opinion.
^^^ whats un islamic in it? it can be culture thing , it can be dumb along with many other traditions, how it became un islamic?
unless its strictly hindu religious mandatory thing and only practised to show hinduism, it doesnt become un islamic.
if its a harmless useless cultural thing not related to any religion but our part of the world, we dont have to follow everything arab, we can be muslims without following all arab traditions, i think we are quite rich culture and tradition, we should only stop practising due to islam that contradict with the basic teachings.
because our ancestors were hindus, and we are from sub continent we are bound to have our own cultural things, we dont have to practise un islamic thats it.

Throwing rice on floor and walking over them is disrespect of food and disrespect of food is not allowed in Islam.
I didn't say anything about being an arab or being an indian, did I?
^ yea Right!!! any excuse to make into fatwa! if you don't like it dont practice it.
shak kills! why are you posting with a different nick?
there's no need for a fatwa......its a very simple thing, you only need to use your brain to find out if throwing food on floor is a good thing or not.
If you like throwing food on floor then please give your reasons for liking it and practising it?
Re holding the Quran over Bride's head. I have seen so many people in weddings taking turns whilst doing that and it makes me think whether any of them are in a state of wuzu whilst holding it.
Usually the Quran is in the fabric holder so having wazu is not requred.
As for throwing rice-
from my understanding it's for saying though i'm leaving i wish you prosperity (to the girl's famly).
We used to throw rice but the concern with throwing away food and it being a "bad" thing..so now the girls throw rose petals when they leave. it's a very pretty custom...and still respects food.

The fabric holder is thin and actually holding the Quran with it on means you can feel your hand making contact with the Quran; wuzu is required.

:halo: if you want food they can throw some at you too…:halo:
jeez people! wats wrong with you guys…why do u have to find something wrong in each and everything…i think Shak killS really explained the whole thing very well and if even after reading it you think its about wasting food than god help you.
chalo…i think i have grown out of the bollywood fixation atleast 5-6 years ago so no its not that . Its just that when the bride (daughter) is going away she is throwing the rice as she goes which signifies that the rizq of that house wont end as it is said na that ghar ka razaq betiyon ki wajah se hota hai or us mein barkat hoti hai unki wajah se…so i think its kinda sweet. Its just the way you look at things…half full glass or half empty…
