Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

So we got a letter from Rogers saying they are going to start charging us an extra $2 - $50 per month due to our internet usage.

They are limiting internet usage to 2 GB per month whereas it was 60 GB per month. So they have decreased it by 58 GB!!!

Rogers will track how many pages we view, how many uploads are made, how many e-mails are sent, per month. If I upload more than 1,000 photos in a month, I will be charged extra. If I play games excessively, I will be charged extra. If I surf over the limited number of pages, I will be charged extra. If I send over the set number of e-mails, I will be charged extra.

In all honesty, I don’t really have time to sit around playing games. From my understanding, this letter has gone around to a lot of people who I have spoken to.

I believe this is just their way to legally start charging users more.

Internet cable via Rogers isn’t exactly stellar as it is. The network is slow and their anti-virus program is a joke.

So what other alternatives are there that actually provide high speed internet?

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Does anybody have any experience with TekSavvy Solutions Inc. or Acanac Solutions?

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

We're using Acanac for a couple of years after getting fed up of Bell and Rogers. Our family's real heavy internet users and it's pretty good. No complaints over all. A friend of mine however was dissapointed with it and has switched back to one of the big Two.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

cogeco in oakville yayyyy

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

is there an alternate to Rogers Desi Channels
please let me know - I am thinking of ditching rogers too, they are just too expensive now, although I have the whole bundle but i still end up paying a fortune every month after their “so called” discounts

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Rogers desi channels is a joke. Have you realized that they have combined Geo News and Geo TV? So after 9:00 p.m., you don't get Geo TV programming, you get Geo News programming. I complained to Rogers and they said that this is how they were given the program from Geo .... so I contacted Geo ... and they said this is how Rogers requested the program and that if we wanted strictly Geo TV, we can get it from Desi TV in Toronto ... but from my research, they are chors as well. sigh

we've been with Teksavvy for a while now after Bell. and it's been absolutely awesome.

Bell was awful. our internet had some problems a couple of years ago around Christmas time. and Bell gave us a run around for at least two weeks. after 2 weeks, I wrote to Ellen Roseman and she put me in touch with some higher up at Bell. the problem was fixed in a couple of days. the technician came on a weekend and didn't leave until the problem was fixed. but getting the run around from the Indian call centre was extremely annoying. obviously the problem was in their local switch centre (whatever they call it) but every CSR gave me the run around. was a really bad experience. I switched to Teksavvy after that disaster and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

Teksavvy summary:

Pros

  • cheap. one of the cheapest out there. 30ish bucks.
  • 200 GB/month which I find is plenty. we don't go over 80-100.
  • outstanding customer service. when you call them, you speak to someone in Canada and someone who actually tries to help... they don't just read off a script and tell you to disconnect and reconnect your modem. they really do try to help and often will fix your problem.

Con

  • might be slower than the Rogers speeds you're used to. it's about 5 megs. not the 10ish megs that Rogers is giving.

if you want to do more research, go to redflagdeals.com and search for teksavvy. the reviews will speak for themselves. 10/10 for teksavvy from me.

forgot to mention one thing to watch out for. you have to have a bell line for teksavvy since teksavvy is a bell reseller. so, if you have a rogers phone and use Teksavvy, they will charge you some more. so, it will be 30ish + 10ish dollars (band charge or something like that they call it). if you have a bell line, you'll just get charged for the internet - not the dry loop.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

brand name doesnt matter.

Curently i have a rogers bundle, I will switch to Bell for Phone and stay with Rogers for TV only. This way i can at least get rid of these ridiculous extra charges for the internet, they might charge me a few extra bucks for TV services, going forward, because I wont have their bundle, but I think i will save overall if I split it between rogers and bell.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

^ sounds like a good plan that might work for me too.
I will definitely be investigating tekksavy....even with the extra $10 charge for keeping the roger's home phone I will be better off.
In fact.....why even keep that line.....nobody really uses it.....only for emergency anyway.....I can simply switch to Bell and we will be fine.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Also, anyone who’s still subscribing to the traditional Bell / Rogers landline - you seriously need to give Vonage a try… I’ve been on Vonage for 5 years now without any major problems.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

^^ like khumar, i've been with acanac for over 2 years now, for a site hosting+domain, 2 voip lines, and dsl service..

i gave up 1 voip line due to usage changes and dsl service due to bell canada screwing third-party competition over and over.. (started from a 5mb line, then decreased to 3mb line stating that i was having unstable connection, then decreased to 1.03mb line stating the same) and then finally 0.3mb connection , stating the same.. and kicker is, i have scripts in place that check for connection , line noise (SNR), and other connection parameters like virtual circuit being up and down (at Bell's office), and stuff like unsuccessful pings to google.ca (simplest form of internet checking, verifies dns and connections working).

going back and forth to acanac, and bell, eventually typed to somebody, then faxed, then snail mailed, and then contacted toronto sun and cp24 and then cancelled with acanac (knowing its not their fault, but bell does that to everyone who isnt their SYMPATICO customer) and went back to rogers.. (highspeed in my area is possible by cable, aka ROGERS or dsl where lines are property of bell, and switching dsl providers wouldnt make a difference).

if i lived in area where bell wouldn't do this , i would take acanac back in a heart beat..

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

^ yeap Acanac is more of a virtual network operator and depends on backend infrastructure and service level agreements with Bell.

Vonage on the other hand provided voip over a end-user's existing internet setup through Cable or DSL, so the reliability/availability is just concerned with Roger's or Bell's direct connection to the end-user.

Like I said, I've been using it for just over 5 years now. I've had to change my voice router once - hardware failure, but other than that, no major problems.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

sucks ur all not in america

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

^^ yeah .. and it sucks MORE that WE came up with dsl ..

in fact we created dsl rite here <2km away from me ..

basically, anything to do with cable/tv/communications/cell-business and canada surprisingly is pretty crappy comparing with european/states areas.. heck, i keep hearing pakistani gutter openers ask u to text/call them on their "mobyle" when it cloags..

and grocerygateway.com would kick their own asses when they will hear thailay-waalay-sabzi sellers deliver to your door now via TEXT MESSAGING ORDERs..

u know what i want ? i want same changes to occur that killed bell canada's monopoly in terms of LONG DISTANCE.. before what used to happen was u were bound to use them only.. then came .. "dial blah blah before u dial long distance" .. then came third party discounted business... then came calling cards and now.. net2phone/voip(vonage as brand)/skype and just simply extended msn/yahoo voice+video..

[/rant]

Do you have cogeco? if yes which package? we will be moving to milton where bell and cogeco is offered (no rogers). I have to decide and place order...

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

What about the Primus phone and internet bundle
compared to Rogers it looks like a real bargain - IF they can deliver
Rogers ka internet kam az kam chalta tu hay :smack:

i heard that primus doesn’t have any limit on download or gigs
will call them tomorrow to confirm

Residing at Mississauga, I just switched to Distributel. Phone with unlimited features and unlimited internet package for $ 39 for three months and $60 for the the next 9 months. Thus, literally reducing my bill by 50%.

Very happy and satisfied with the value. Speed is pretty good, phone quality is also awesome.

No 911 though. Hope that helps. :)

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Mehnaz, did you give Uniserve a try? I pay 32 dollars a month, no caps on bandwidth, consistent speeds, excellent customer service.

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Time to ditch Rogers once again. A year ago when they sent us this letter, I called to cancel and they gave us the internet at a discounted price ($25 for 25 gb) so I took it as I don't use the full 25 GB. Now it is time to make the switch again.

So who do you recommend as of today's date?

Re: Rogers Internet - Completely Fed Up!

Yes ! time to ditch rogers and bell for that matter !

I like to hear other TV Viewing alternatives including Satellite viability and consistency in service !
Any One ???
