Robinhoods of subcontinent

be it 1980s bollywood movies like ‘Kaali Charan’ (I always called it Kali Chooran) or Punajbi gujjar movies in Pakistan (Maula Jatt, Humayun Gujjar, etc), these dakus have been glamorised in media.

Media is the reflection of society. Punjab’s folklore talks about Jagga daku in positive words. UP’s Sultana Daku or Phoolan Devi are not portrayed as total evil.

Do you know some other characters / personalities which were otherwise involved in criminal activities, but they got status of public hero in different parts of sub-continnet?

:hmmm: Nice topic…

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

His portrayal has always been of a grabber and not giver except for the song ‘Saathi.. mazloomon ka sathi hai Altaf Hussain’. He is more inspired of Nasir Adeeb’s Punjabi Heroes (wayyyyyyyyyyyy jageerdara… waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Thanedara :hbk: ) than Robinhood.

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

Sultana Daaku mard tha ya aurat ? :hmmm:

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

any such gunda in your life that people worshiped like a hero?

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

aakhri umr main KKF ki mehtrani ka kaam anjam dia tha Sultana Daku ne.

As per KKF, Sultana was a man, though, the area he belonged ‘Sultana’ is a male name.. If he was from Punjab, we could have a case based on ‘wayyyyyyyyy Sultana’.

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

Mehtrani, matlab ?

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

Off topic but I thought you might want to check this out when you get access to YouTube in your old age. :cb:

You FAVOURITE TV personality M.L. did a really nice episode of K.S. yesterday.
The topic was ‘owning the history of our land - Raja Ranjeet Singh, Bhagat Singh etc. including the Koh-e-Noor heera :)’.
It was a very positive expose of Ranjeet Singh’s accomplishments, good administration and his rule in Punjab.
In the program, they said that khaadim-e-aa’laa S.S., Ranjeet Singh kay paaoun ki dhool kay baraabar bhi nahi hai. :cb:
You should check it out.

Re: Robinhoods of subcontinent

During Zia regime, dhaRel (daku) culture was at its peak in rural Sindh. There were theories that who agitated against Zia regime and talked about Bhutto was tagged as DhaRel. During those days, Parroo Chandio (Parroo DhaRel) became a hit and was quite famous / infamous. After his death, a Sindhi movie was made on his life. The movie used to be released in local cinemas all around 1990s decade.

Then there was this Mohib Sheedi, who was killed during 1990s (democracy era) and again a Sindhi movie was made on his life. Gulab Chandio played the title. My Naani was quite excited to see teh footage of movie, as Paroo’s mother (which played by Shahzadai who was in serials Marvi, Jungle, Deewaren, etc as well) was shown seated in Hala’s peengha. lols.
