I totally know what you’re talking about faizy…whenever the topic comes up..i dunno..it provokes this extremely violent, annoyed and irritable reaction from me…so now my parents and I kind of have this silent awkwardness between us about this…

I mean..i know I need to start talking about it in order to make this happen..its not like I’m running away from it..it’s just that..I dunno..I’m not comfortable with the whole process with my parents..

nor do i have a changa munda of my own

neah.. my reasons of anger are different they know me TOO well… and SURPRIZINGLY … they go against EVERYTHING (upto now, minus two) that i want..

so00ooOOoOooo000 finally when they brought it up, i was having bad enough day…

all quiet since then.. waiting for something to pop again… aasteenain charhaaye taiyyar :soldier:

I havnt read all the replies, but i think it's pretty sad when ppl hav such a hard time discussing this stuff with their own parents.. i mean they love you, and they hav ur best interest at heart (or they should anyway.. :p)..the only ones who will ever love you this much are your parents, no one else and u shudn't be afraid to talk to them about anything.

Sometimes they don’t have your best interests at heart. My parents didn’t. The first guy they married me off to was solely because he was my Dad’s nephew and his Dad had passed away . . and OH YOU SHOULD HELP HIM and OH, you’re raised here and he’s raised there so he’s more religious than you. And, I stupidly went along with it partly cause I was dumb and partly because I was sixteen and partly because I wanted to make them happy. I wish I could go back to that moment and slap myself. . . But it’s all good. I’m happy now with my husband who I found myself and they deal with him but initially they couldn’t stand him. Why? Because he’s not from Pakistan. He is the best thing that ever happened to me Al-Hamdulilah. So my point, parents are supposed to do what’s best for you but sometimes they don’t. They’re human too and can be motivated by other things than doing what’s best for their child. In my case, it was my Dad doing what’s best for his nephew.

Solar, sorry i didn’t mean to sound judgemental glad u worked everything out..

But my point was that both parents (mostly parents in my opinion) and kids are doing something wrong here.. parents when they do what they did to you (pressure you into marriage at the age of 16) and for creating an environment that makes it hard to speak up or against something.. And the kids, when they’re older, colege age and up who are still too afraid to say no or speak up..

We all know that forced marriages have no place in ISlam AT ALL. But parents don’t listen… they might not physically force you but they pull crap like that..

such topics are borings. though i have no problem when my parents talk about rishtas. its my turn to get halal and they are asking me whether they should start looking for a butcher (girl :p). i told them do whatever they like. :D

I was at the ISNA conference a few years ago with my parents. They had run into some really old friends that they hadn’t seen in ages. My mom was telling the aunty that I was her youngest daughter when suddenly the aunty grabbed me and said..“Yeh tho meri hai.” I was like wha??? My mom got totally weirded out and cut the conversation short so that we could make a fast get away!!

that has happened to me a couple times…it is such an uncomfortable feeling. I normally just smile it off and try to break free from her…and run if i can!

ok so back to the topic on hand…

i think it’s best to be honest with your parents and the rishtas.

yea i agree there are some parents like that…some dont care about their child’s best interest and others do care but dont realize at the moment that they arent thinking of their child.
