Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

I do ponder a return to Pakistan in later life (at like 30), but have no idea of the relative costs for “the easy life” out there, given that all my close family has lived in the west for nigh on 40-50 years now. (3 generations in some cases).

How much, in todays rupees, would it cost to maintain a 24 hour staff of 1 cook, 1 driver, 1 masseur, 1 general shopping (grocery) servant and a cleaner?

That’s 5 staff, I am guessing at 10,000 pkr a month? So, about £100 per person. Thus c. 500 pound a month?

Is that realistic?

Also how would one find out abt property for sale in say Islamabad, Lahore?

Websites?

I recently started work, and I dislike the concept immensely. I just want to set up some sort of stable income (buy to let a few properties) by the time I’m 30-and then just relax until Allah calls me back.

Please help me get a realistic estimate of costs for such a lifestyle on a monthly basis?

Also, apartments in Pak, 2 bedroom ones, how much are realistic prices for nice parts of Islambad or Lahore?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

You would need a lot, especially if you don't own a home or have kids who will have to be educated.

My husband figured it up once, and for us to live separately and maintain the same kind of life that we have here in Isb he would have to make almost as much as he does here.

Property in Isb is out of site right now, but I couldn't give you exact quotes. You can always check the Dawn classifieds just to get a rough idea.

Because property management is a breeze and no work at all is involved. Realistic much?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

I am prepared for 10 years hard work. Thats all my body is designed for. I have that laze of the beach, at the park disposition.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

You forgot to mention spending summer in Canada, spring in Switzerland and autumn in New York.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

For 10,000, no way! I pay my chokeedar and driver alone total of 10,000 , but they buy and cook their own food. Inlfation has gone up in Pakistan a lot lately, things cost more, specially in Islamabad, so servants/workers in Islamabad these days demand a lot more, less you want some lazy ass who does nothing most of the time and steals.

1 cook & 1 driver servant and a cleaner 1 masseur, 1 general shopping (grocery) ?
= Best if you hired a married family with 1 or 2 kids, the wife could do your cooking and cleaning etc, the husband could do your driving and shopping, or do your own shopping, and as for the masseur, I suggest marriage in that aspect =)

As for houses, a decent house would cost you around 250-300 lakh in F10 1 kanal, or a dangerous apartment in the F10 towers would set you back anywhere from 50-80 lakh, or you could risk it and book an underconstruction apartment in F10 or F11 which may or may not be completed properly or on time, as is the case in one building where the builders ran away to america or after the earthquake people demanded their money back and construction was halted.

People say Islamabad prices are really high but they have actually come down 25% since the 9/11 bubble so dont expect Islamabad prices to come lower, but to actually go higher in the future. Lahore is about 30% cheaper than Islamabad, but then again security isnt the best in Lahore (plus the heat). Since your a lazy bum and want to live a paki nawab life, Isb would better suit you, plus murree is only a 2 hour drive away.

www.forcesestate.com and www.islamabadcity.com are some real estate websites.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Thanks for the advice!

Let us ditch the Masseur, for now, how abt a small house/apartment with a driver and cook?

I did say 10,000 per worker, per month. Thats quite different to your sums.

I know very little abt life in Pakistan, what are the nice areas of Lahore-where one can chill?

What is 250-300 lakh in pounds or dollars?-I'll reconvert from one to the other, but I'm not sure what a lakh is.

Lahore is hotter but has greater culture-plus cricket.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Ah, thought you meant 10,000 TOTAL. For 10,000 PER servant you can get people to walk upside down on their hands for you 24/7!!! Its probably better that you rent initially until you get an idea of what you want etc. If you want an apartment than book one or something that are under construction less you want to live in a bad area. A one bedroom might set you anywhere from 60 to 90 lakh or you could get one in Diplomatic Enclave in islamabad, relatively cheaper, TONS of security and privacy/peace etc but NOTHING to do so you’ll get bored but like you said you want to come sit on your ass and do nothing and have servants so Diplomatic Enclave sounds good haha.

Lahore has tons of nice places to chill although I’m not too familiar with it, I hear fortress, libery, defense etc are all nice places. I find these places more “foreign-ish” and more fun for foreigners. 250-300 lakh in dollars is around $500,000. One lakh is around $1666.66.

Lahore is tons of fun, the people are more outgoing and friendly, in islamabad people are really introverted unless you find a different crowd.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

I cannot give you good advice for Islamabad but if you want calm & quiet (also cleaner) place to live then Islamabad would be nicer. Keep in mind that we (Lahoris) say that people from Pindi/ISB are "rukhay" they are not as friendly as Lahoris are plus you will not see any culture in Islambad.

On the contrary Lahore is full of culture and activites. Lahore is much cheaper as compared to Islamabad as well. The only thing u might find in Lahore is that its too noisy and not as clean as Islamabad (some areas are even cleaner than Islamabad). There are loads of places in Lahore where u can entertain yourself on daily basis, I didn't find even a single place in Islamabad that I can match with Lahore, but by this I am not saying that there is nothing in ISB. Lahore is definately much better when it comes to fun.

As you would be moving from West to Pakistan I dont think it would be possible for you to construct a house urself (I mean by supervision) from scratch though it can save you from 10,000 pounds to around 25,000 pounds. Last year my brother built a house in Johar town area, its around 24 marla house (a little bit over one kanal, 45 feet front 122 feet depth) in Johar Town and costed around 80,000 GBP. We were lucky that we bought that plot few years ago and saved alot on the land. Now a days the same property is around double the price. So if you planning the same size then keep in mind around 160,000 to 175,000 GBP plus u need to add the price of furniture & house hold that can be from 10,000 to 25,000 (depending upon what u want). Defence (DHA) is more expensive the same size costs around 200,000 GBP to 225,000 GBP.

At present in Lahore u pay around Rs. 3500 to Rs. 5000 to watchman (Chaukidar) around 6000 to a driver. Cook+Cleaner are usually husband & wife mostly kept in servant quarters usually charge 5000 or around that figure. What most people do is that they ask man to be Chaukidar & wife to be cleaner and pay them around 6000 (both). Man also works as grocery shopper. So I'd say if u play safe u are looking around Rs 12000 (or 15000) for almost everything done.

Now lets come to income, the average pay in lahore is 15000 to 17000 (I am not talking about labour work here). But the life style u mentioned u definately need more than 60,000 rupees per months provided if u plan one trip to west per year. For further lavish style u definately should look around 100,000 per month.

As u said buy to let in Pakistan then either must be a politician, a high ranking bureaucrat or a "badmaash". In few cases u might not face problem otherwise u never know what kind of people u are putting in ur property as tanents. They might not pay u the rent and might even not evacuate it when u ask them to leave due to non-payment. So becareful about this. There are other better businesses particularly exporting clothes and other stuff from Pakistan to West, profit margin is pretty high.

I'd suggest u take some time off, visit Lahore as well as Islambad, see what u like and what u dislike make up ur mind according to your own home work.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Rs 5,000-6,000 per month for most servants should be enough.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Yeah?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

chan, jis gal da pata nhin, oday wich mooN na maar.

In english: You will be better off where you are.

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

But I am growing increasingly interested in my motherland. Do you encourage foreign born ppl of Pakistani stock to completely forget abt Pakistan?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Foreign born Pakistanis returning to Pakistan is the best thing that can happen to the country and should be encouraged to 100% of all Expats!! The money, education, everything they bring back with them really helps the country, the economy, development etc

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

So why was my interest being discouraged by other parties?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

It will be the best thing you’ll ever do bro!!! Don’t let anyone discourage you, the people who will be discouraging you will have spent their own childhoods as bookworms and the rest of their lives running after pennies till they die in some wet miserable western country, they might have got monetarily rich during their lives but emotionally broken, stressed, depressed and frustrated, only the jealous would tell you not to go.

We’re moving to Isb too, I would have preferred Lahore or Karachi but I had little say in the matter my parents have gone back and got the house in Isb and some servants sorted, we’re employing a family we know from our village. My mum and dad say they’ve done their bit for Britain now, they’re planning on letting a few properties over here which will take some travelling back and fourth and I can study through ICS or Open Uni or something.

Other than that we’ll do nothing but play golf, laze in the sun, watch cricket and go out for dinners… Oooooh I’m having joygasms just thinking of it all. :smooth: :roman:

Sunny Pakistan here I come.:jhanda:

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Najam summed it up very well :k:

You can live like a king if you a house in any posh locality in lahore, islamabad and have monthly income around Rs 100,000

For a foreign qulaified and experienced person, (excess of ) above mentioned income is normal here.

The bottom line is

Pakistan is a difficult counrty to live in. You must be mentally strong, and you must posses good shock absorbers

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Like the kind on tennis rackets?

Is Karachi less desirable a place to live?

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Joygasms.. :rotfl:

I been here for a while.. codey’s right, u gotta be mentally strong.. i take things too much to heart n thas not a gud thing to have if u want peace of mind here :frowning:

Najim, yusuf, what is there fun to do in Lahore ?? :grumpy:

Re: Returning to Pakistan-Q&A!

Isnt there a Red Light district?

Can I get booze?
