Resume

Hello,
I think I will be graduating in one year or so and was thinking of creating my resume. I had few questions for our guppies- how long the resume should be? how many pages ideally? what items should be avoided and what items deserve special emphasis. Do I give references directly in my resume?

Thanks in advance!
Moin

Re: Resume

1 page, references on request, emphasis on work experience relevant to the field your looking at getting into.

Re: Resume

example?

Re: Resume

In your situation it is better if you make a CV instead of a resume
as I assume that presently you dont have work experience and are entering the job market as a freshie

Re: Resume

Ok, I made my resume using the following template/sample. This was given to me by my university career counselor. I am unable to attach it but if you want I can pm you the word doc. I hope it helps.

Sample Resume Format
Your Name Here
9876 Home Street
Any City, State 12345
(123) 345-6789
[email protected]

OBJECTIVE The type of position you are seeking, the type of organization you are seeking it in and the skills you want to use on the job.

SUMMARY
• Use this section to draw together common themes in your resume and/or to indicate a certain number of years evidencing a particular skill.
• This section is not necessary but can be used to mention special skills or attributes that don't fit neatly under one particular category.

EDUCATION
Type of Degree or certification ...................................Expected Date of Graduation

University Name, City, State
Major:
Minor:
GPA: Only if you have GPA of 3.0 or higher

EXPERIENCE

You can divide experience in sections: Related experience and other experience. If you don’t have any related work experience then just leave it as experience.

Position Title........................................................Date-Date
ABC Company, City, State
• Begin bullet statements with action verbs.
• Emphasize the skills that you developed not only the tasks that you preformed.
• Remember that you never use I, me, or my on your resume because they are assumed.
• When formatting your experience think about which is more important, your position title or the company you worked for.

Position Title .........................................................Date-Date
Company Name, City, State
Another type of format is to type a paragraph of information describing your skills. This format, while still used, is not as popular as bulleted statements.

SKILLS
• Indicate any computer skills, especially related to your major or career field to which you are entering. Also, be sure to add your level of expertise. Mention that you attend a laptop university.
• Enter any language skills or other skills that would be useful to your major or career that are not mentioned elsewhere on your resume.

HONORS
• Add any honors, awards or scholarships indicating dates when you received them.
• Include "Dean's List", if applicable but indicate the number of semesters.

ACTIVITIES
• Add any student organizations that you have been involved in, the dates you have been involved in them and any leadership roles you have had in them.
• Example: Any Student Organization, 1998-Present: President, 2000-2001

REFERENCES
Available upon request. (It is no longer common to see this section on a resume. Use it only if you need to add length to your resume.)

Re: Resume

errr.. come again?! if he doesn't have work experience and / or sufficient content for a resume, how will he create a CV?

A CV is supposed to be an elaboration of your education, training and work chronology.

Moin, I'd advise you use the Gupshup search facility and lookup for "resume" as a title keyword. You'll find at least a dozen threads and chances are that you'll find your answers in one of those.

Re: Resume

^ Umar bhai I mean that a CV will provide him with more freedom to describe his academic achievements, projects and assignments as opposed to a regular resume, which is basically a 2 page summary of your career achievements, focusing on your experience and skill set.

But as far as the job market is concerned, it has no head or tail. I can quote ridiculous responses from HR departments and recruitment agencies .... :D

Re: Resume

Lusi noce format

although for fresh grads with little work experience skills being placed as the first item may get better results

Re: Resume

Thanks a lot for the input! I really appreciate.. kinda like what I was looking for.. :)

Re: Resume

I guess I found what I was looking for… Thanks for a very comprehensive response. The first job is very important for everyone and I guess 2008 would be the year for me if I do things as I plan.. now, since you and Fraudia sir are little experienced(not old.. :)), lemme ask this question- looking at like 50 resumes/minute, which ones catch your attention most -1) The ones which have the keywords are highlighted or, 2) the one which is simply laid and iis descriptive. My seniors who are looking for job are telling me that usually the resumes are screened by non-technical folks and they have no idea what to look for but have a set of keywords that they look for in the resumes.. :lahol:

Re: Resume

o yaar u dont hve to be polite, I am old ..buzurg insaan.

when i scan resumes I look for key words, I look for titles, and it really helps me if someone has just listed their key cometencies and skills up top, because I can then scan their education or experience to look for evidence of what they are saying the key skills are.

I do look at what university or what company a perosn was it, their previous roles.

if okay, that ends up in the short list.

Now, while HR screens resumes and many times its a software that would look for key words and then only present the top x% to the recruiter, who would then do a shortlist and then get the hiring manager involved.

if u can get access to a hiring manager directly, its much better.

Re: Resume

Tuada shukriya janaab.. Aap wakhrey type jia ho. aap buzurg nahin.. abhi tu aap jawan ho! Khair, how long the resume should be? Some say for upto 3 yeas of experience, it should not be more than a page long. I find it hard to fit too many things I feel I need others to know about me in a single page. I think I might end up omitting some details about self or zip them somehow.. :bummer: So, you suggest skills plus address and contact details on the top of the page and then a few paras devoted to experience followed by education and references to end the resume..?

Re: Resume

it would deoend on amount and type of exprience

for fresh grads

contact info-skills summary-educatio-experience flow may be the best

Re: Resume

ok what kind of stuff do you put in skills besides gen. comp stuff and language...

When I was making my resume, I had no clue what else to put in skills so basically my career counselor ended up just omiting that section for me. Since I have lot of work experience so I guess it doesn't matter too much.... or does it?

Re: Resume

u have a career counselor  ? Aap tu nawab ho.. aap barrey log paisey waaley  I don’t think I can afford one.. the one at university herself is looking for a job  but lets say someone(my buddy) has 6 years of experience and some of his experience is 2-3 months of work(before the company was closed and he was laid off).. how do you manage any experience < a year.. in ur resume.. he has experience w/ 9 companies in like 6 years- all < year

Re: Resume

lol... no I don't have a private career counselor...hahaha... she works on the campus career center. For my program all students in the program are required to get thier resumes edited by her.

Re: Resume

I am going to bed now, but will answer
u can also ask pyari83, she crafted her resume in this format.
skills are not just computer skills but skills relevent to teh industry and the job.
could be as simple as financial modeling, business case, monte carlo simulation etc for example.

Re: Resume

Fraudi tay Lusi jee cud you please answer my question bout my friend the idiot? Tonu shukriya

Re: Resume

^^ well I am not a resume expert but I will suggest that maybe he should sort out what is relevent to his course work and what is not. Then 1st list the related experience in chronological order and then other experience. This is what I did or was advised to do. Actually I was also advised to put some of my relevent volunteer work experience in the related experience which was only couple months long. So I guess it should not be a problem.

Re: Resume

he can try making a functional rather than a chronological resume.
secondly he can state that he was an independent contractor working on numerous short term enagagements since he did not want to be tied down to one company then and wanted to broaden his exposure and experience base.

and layffs are one thing, he should really try to stay at his next company for 3 years atleast to show stability.
