Resume question

ASAK

I’m re-doing my resume right now and planning to send it to some organisations within Pakistan and one or two in the US.

The thing is, I have a section for

Leadership

90% of my leadership/extracurricular activities in college revolved around the Islamic Society and the main events I organised were like Islam Awareness Week etc

For me that’s my biggest extracurricular achievement and leadership role in college but should I put that in my resume? Does it look unprofessional? Also, what abt the mention of the words ISLAM and MUSLIM in my resume, should i have those there?

Like right now I have:

LEADERSHIP

  • Interviewed, evaluated, hired and trained employees for my department and team at my current job at XYZ.
  • Independently led individual and team projects at my current job and networked with other departments.
  • President of Muslim Students Awareness Network, X University, 2002, led a successful campus wide campaign to secure university funding for MSAN; MSAN also competed with all university student organizations to win the X University Dean’s award; organized Islam Awareness Week 2001, the biggest annual student event at X University.
  • Core member of several X University student organizations, actively involved in organizing events, publicity, funds generation, networking, campus relations, media relations, community work, social awareness.

does this look weird? :konfused: please suggest changes and give any ideas if u think i shud make any alterations

thanks a lot

i think a general rule of thumb is that u shouldnt mention any names of organizations that will reveal ur race, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, etc etc...

hmm i c..thanks :)

Pakistan ke liye tou Sab Chalega.... BUT... US ke liye... agar tum ne... ye MSAN wali kahani Likh di na.. tou... UnhooN ne CV ko ANTHREX ke Dar se haath bhi naheeN lagana :)

GS haan mein bhee yai soch rai thee :hehe:

actually Pakistan mein bhee “maadrun” Muslims kee kami nai waise toh

i was jus thinking of creating a standard resume that i cud send out everywhere, i dont wana have a different one for every org u know???

i might edit out the muslim stuff and change it to something generic, like presided over a large student org or something like that..soch rahi hoon :konfused:

Change it …

Muslim Students Awareness Network to Students Awareness Network

MSAN likhnay ki zarooray hi naheeN hay…

Kesa…

hmm

kuch karti hoon

will tell u later what i did

abhee job pe hoon ghar ja k kuch karoon gee most prolly

thanks for the idea btw :smooth:

U r welcome for the Thnaks… btw

But.. JOB pe Personal Kaam karna Seekho… if U wana Live in PAK

come on G_S dont u know im so imaandaar :dixsi:

Irem, you don’t need a dedicated section for leadership unless you are applying for a job as a sandwich artist. Quite honestly no one cares what you did in college in terms of your extra curricular activities. Employers are more interested in what can you bring to their organization. Take off the leadership stuff. Good luck.

:jhanda:

A resume should not be more than 1 page unless you have 20 years of experience at the IMF. Always remember that the purpose of a resume is to get you an interview, and not a job!

:jhanda:

One more thing…”independently led individual and team Projects”…. Reads very bad. You cant independently lead teams….

Forget abt the CV and Imandaari now

Remember…!

U R RICH now :hehe:

Humko Kuch Khanay ko Milay ga In form of GHAREEBOON ko KHANA Khilana… when U get rich …

ds ye dialoguebaazi aur jazbat ka time nai hae ye rozi roti ka maamla hae yaar samjha karo :hehe:

Madhanee it is one page. actually i have such little achievements other than college extracurriculars that i decided to put all that there :hehe: mera one page bhee nai bhar rha tha so i had to think of things to write :hehe:

r u sure i dont need an extra section for leadership? coz when i checked on some resume templates provided by our college career counselors, they had a “leadership and extracurricular” thingie there. and since i’m applying for a job that does require leadership i thought i’d put it there.

…”independently led individual and team Projects" looks bad? :hehe: ok i’ll remove that

thanks for ur help

G_S haanji jumayraat k din langar lagay ga

And wo din kab ayega …? :bummer:

I have to agree with Madhanee...
esp. on a one-pager, you don't need leadership in its own section. When I was in HR, I'd much rather see a person's Accomplishments rahter than his/her Accountabilities.

Make sure you elaborate the achievements in your current job with active statements that bring out your potential. For me that would be the highlight of your resume.

Good Luck with everything!

if u have a leadership section, where would u put that information... like do u make a section called "achievements" where do u put ur achievements?

guyssssssssssssssssssssssssssss YOU GUYS R NOT HELPING :crying:

o d i dont get what u mean by ur question/comment :konfused:

U_T i saw it in the templates provided by our career counseling centre in college that there IS a leadership section ye meri apni eeJad nai hae :crying:

and tell meeeeeee THISSSSSSSSSS..you said “When I was in HR, I’d much rather see a person’s Accomplishments rahter than his/her Accountabilities.”

what do u mean by accomplishments/accountabilities???

i thought that these R my accomplishments, my extracurricular/leadership roles in college, i means its only been a yr since i graduated, and my current job is not a mangerial one, so how do i highlight the leadership experience i have had coz the jobs im applying for require someone who can hold a leadership role

i am an instructional designer. i already described my job in a couple of lines. ab aur is ko kitna describe karoon  nai ho rha muj se bbasssss :crying:

G_S mujhay nai pata :crying:

sabHon ne faults nikaaleen aur lekin kisi ne meri koi madad nai ki mein kisi naal nai bolna ab baasss :grumpy: :crying:

uff ghussa tow na ho... I just told you what I think... you don't have to follow the template provided by your school, and I personally think its really dumb to provide a template which has a leadership section on it, cuz I have only seen that in resumes' which apply for positions in public relations or a high level management position like VP, CIO or something

In any case, you need to work on your current job profile - couple of lines? you're kidding right? Even in a chronological resume', the average for each job is about 4 or 5 lines. What I recommended for you was a Functional resume' (google it for examples) and rework your job profile, and perhaps include sub-headings like Responsibilities ; Projects ; Accomplishments etc. under that job heading.

Sorry Irem, I didn't mean to be unhelpful. Send me a PM if you want specific help.

Regards.

U_T kyun nai hoon ghussa har koi khamakha meray bicharay masoom se resume ko cheer phaar kar rha hae :crying: itna bura toh nai hae itni mehnat se mein ne banaya tha :frowning:

khayr, OK :stuck_out_tongue:

i will look at functional resume. and see what it says.

but what do u think abt this point i raised:

" i thought that these R my accomplishments, my extracurricular/leadership roles in college, i means its only been a yr since i graduated, and my current job is not a mangerial one, so how do i highlight the leadership experience i have had coz the jobs im applying for require someone who can hold a leadership role  "

im not applying for VP or CEO but like something that would require me to lead projects n stuff u know?

and actually mera current job itna BARA job nai hae u know like im not at some high post or something, kaafi normal sa job hae, thas-y mujhay samaj nai aa rai thee k us ko itna barHa charHa k kese pesh karoon u know? lekin i’ll try to describe it in more detail inshallah

and u werent unhelpful. rola panay kee meri aadat hae dont worry abt it ignore it

i'd agreee about remvoing the name muslim...just say led a student organization..

I would put in a section called professional skills AND there emphasize any all leadership roles where yo usucceeded....

hmmm i c

thanks amelie

will putting college stuff under this "professional skills" thingie be ok?
