Resume or Interview Help..

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Thanks , I have more question in that post which need answering too. :silly:

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Ok here you go Mirch :emmy:

Once you have made up your mind of whether the new role is for you , you should speak to the recruiter in confidence to find out if they would consider your experience range for the position … I believe they would , since they know your work experience and ethic … they might show concern about why you want to give up your current role , but then you have an appropriate reason to …

Once the recruiter seems confident that you can be a good candidate for the role, then is the right time to discuss it with your boss to put in a good word for you … But it largely depends on your relationship with your manager …

So in essence Mirch jee , you have already outlined the correct process of how to achieve the goal :@:

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Thanks for your help , it is great help because I was missing the link of discussing it with the recruiter first. I will do that Inshallah.
I really appreciate it.

MashAllah Mirch!!!

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

some persxpective Mirch pai jaan

Q) There is this position in my company and my organization which has opened up . It is two notches higher than what I hold now I have all the qualifications but not recent more of a bit rusty , for 3 years I have been doing something entirely different , but I did all of it long time ago. My pay is more than this open position offers but this open position is more responsible and would be boost for my career and has more benefits , like stock options , hefty bonuses etc. Should I go for it ? Would they entertain me as a candidate ? How do I go about it ?

In many cases the bonuses can be substantial so you have to see what they are.
secondly, they may give you a higher base anyways, it is in their control, on 2 opportunities, both internal moves the group revised the position and bumped it into a higher band for me. they can juggle things by bringing a more qualified person in one area and a more junior in another, in one case they were looking for 2 ppl at one level, but then they brought me in at a higher level and brought someone under me in my team. You will not know unless you talk to recruiter.

Q) Should I talk to the internal recruiter to find out who is this position with and start talking to that person or should I just apply through regular channels and hope for the best ?

definitely talk to the hiring manager, as an internal candidate you have that advantage. why not avail it.

Q) Should I ask my boss and others who know me to put good words for me ?

yes, that carries a lot of weight. But if your boss is on his way out and has been out of favour etc or seen as bad leader, then his endorsement will hurt and haunt you.

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

wondering if any one can answer my Q

what is gulf style/ dubai style resume?

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

I contacted the internal recruiter to have a talk with her . She told me since they have to fill 260 positions therefore she will not be able to talk to me in person. :bummer:
So much for talking to her and getting any tips . Then I talked to her to find out the name of the hiring manager , she told me that hiring manager position is also open and interviews are being conducted. :bummer:
What do I do now ? Just apply and wait for some miracle to happen and I get the job , How do I go about it now ? If they do not call me for an interview I will not be able to highlight my strengths and cover for my weaknesses in person and have to count on my resume and cover letter to do this job. :hmmm:
CB , X2 any more pointers ?

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Find out who the hiring managers hiring manager and peers are and get cozy with them. Will write more later when I am home

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Hi Mirch,

X2 is very right, try to find out who the hiring managers manager is ... I think its a very unprofessional attitude deplayed by the recruiter. But since they are in no mood to cooperate. I would suggest one of the following:

Hiring Manager's Manager , lets call him Mr X

1- Contacting Mr X directly , drop them an email first indicating your interest in the role and why you are interested ( hence the opportunity to let them know about your skills ) ... let them know that you will be happy to have an informal conversation with them to talk about your experience and your understanding of the role. In the end, do mention that you hve sent your resume to the relevant recruiter as well to follow through the internal procedure . ( this will help the manager feel comfortable sharing feedback with the recruiter incase he doesnt feel comfy getting back to you directly )

2- You need a middle person. Since the recruiter has refused to do so, you can perhaps use your manager as that middle person .. depending on your own relationship with him/her ... you will have to do this very carefully coz sometimes managers dont like the idea of losing their best performers ... Finding out if your manager and Mr X are on similar level of seniority and if they have a working relationship ... If yes , then first talk to your manager and then find out if he suggests you talking to Mr X ... at that point you request that your manager drops Mr X a note of recommendation for you.

3- If you feel your manager isnt the right person to talk to .. then look around you, do you have any other senior managers ( in other departments ) who could become your middle person to introduce you to Mr X?

Ideally I would say you make the direct approach. Alot of times Direct approach takes you ahead of the competition ... but first assess carefully your own managers mindset ... And remember , what you do through the recruiter will remain formal .. what you do through a middle person or directly with Mr X should be more in an informal basis ... otherwise HR will eat you head out on stepping out of the procedure ...

Good luck Mirch ...Let me know if there are any questions ..

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

Hi DMD,

Dubai style CV would be as follows:

  • Focus your CV around international experience and large companies that you have worked for.
  • Keep it to a max three page CV

  • Hiring managers like to read details on the CV .. so its important you use keywords that will catch their attention. Basically you need to bear in mind that in Dubai the recruiters are more sales people then technical recruiters who understand the intricacies of the role they are recruiting for .. so to get through the ones who dont understand technical terminology you need to use keywords so they can match CV with role easily .

I think thats about it , the key tips ... Dubai is a very simple market , nothing complicated about them much unlike European and US markets ... all you need is to be able to get through the recruiters who arent very smart like i mentioned above. but at the same time the hiring managers are strong people who understand what they are looking for .. so your resume should be somewhere in the middle , which caters to both the parties ....

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

thanks a lot CB.

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

What always gets me (!) is when interviewers/recruiters say "any questions?" I'm always at a loss!

This time around I was fortunate enough to get a second interview and I asked the questions that I should have asked on the first interview..but still!

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

what's a CV?i've never heard of something like that.

how do they expect me to not be nervous when they only give me a day to prepare for my interview, God be with me, I already have a good job but this one is one step above for me in terms of getting more technical experience.

I wish i had a few days to prepare :(

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

second para is pretty damn accurate - for the UAE market not many people have summed things up so succinctly ... so take heed people !! Or those that still want to go to the jobs desert called dubai!

Re: Resume or Interview Help..

A CV is a Curriculum Vitae. Pretty much a more detailed Resume ( as known in the US Canada) that is used across Europe and pretty much every other country in the world aswell outside north america.
