Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

Who doesn’t want to be good? I think all of us would like to be “good”. Does anyone actually want to be “bad”? I doubt it.

When some of us do bad things, or turn out bad, when we take up the wrong path, granted that we are responsible for our actions and every individual has independent thinking and decision faculties, but still, if you peer deep into someone’s life, you can always find reasons that made them take a wrong decision and choose the wrong path.

People might tell you you are making excuses for your weaknesses and faults but isn’t that a bit harsh? I mean, how unaffected can a human being remain by his surroundings and the events happenning in his life?

We had an uncle who came from a very good family and was a bright young student. He was studying medicine in a very good med school, had a lot going for him in life. One day, a political leader was giving a speech in his college and made fun of one of his teachers. He (our uncle) stood up and defended his teacher. The political leader got angry, had secret service goons pick him up and get him beaten. Since then he took up the path to deterioration. He dropped out of college, took up bad habits, got involved with the wrong crowd…and a lot of other stuff. He also ended up hurting his family a lot in the process.

I know its all about self control, how strong are you to pull yourself out of a ditch and continue walking on the path of life steadily…they say “mayoosi kufr hae”…but still…life is not that simple…sometimes it becomes so difficult to take oneself out of “mayoosi” that a person just becomes indifferent to everything.

I guess one should draw the line when his actions start affecting others. If someone hurt you it doesn’t give you the right to hurt another person. However its also worth noting that it is indeed those who have been abused that become the biggest abusers, its human nature and unless one has strong self control one does succumb to this trend.

Life is a test but does God really expect human beings to be so strong that we come out unscathed from fires? God loves us more than 70 mothers. He is Beneficient and Kind beyond belief. Then how can He want us to go through such a gruelling test?

Hmmm…

I guess the only solution is that one should look at those who have been given bigger tests, have gone through more difficult circumstances, yet they are still grateful and have a smile on their faces. Gratefulness to the Almighty under all circumstances is the only solution.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

I had a very interesting discussion about this with somebody not too long ago. There doesnt seem to be a clear answer - or two clear sides. They are so mingled.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

hmmm care to share more points of view on the matter then MQ? :-)

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

Alright let me try.

First of all, good and evil sort of exist together. And like the person pointed out from the discussion we were having a few days back, sometimes good comes out of evil , and evil comes out of good. Im sure he would be able to explain properly, but Im just giving it a try.

Of course situations and circumstances make us do certain things. But that is not to say that one is not responsible for the final step he/she takes.

A lot of us will find excuses for our intentions or actions. Its so easy to justify a wrong action. I can do all kinds of stupid things, but when I have to think about whether they were wrong.... I find all the excuses...and make myself think it was right.

Not to mention a person can have good intentions, but the outcome might be--- or might seem evil.

All in all its a very complicated matter.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

You said "good comes out of evil"...

Lekin MQ, aren't good and evil clearly defined in our religion?

And we are indeed responsible for our actions but sometimes there is so much pressure that it becomes very very difficult to stay on the right path.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

Yes good and evil are clearly defined. Yet how they come about - that always depends haina? And while one "evil" act may bring about something good, it wont always do so if repeated.

Yes its tough trying to always do "good" - but I think thats what its all about. If it was all that easy, it wouldnt really be a test for mankind would it now.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

M_Q lekin Allah miyaan loves us a LOT then why have we been given this test? How come we are not all just going to heaven? Why should we go through such hardship?

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

Allah loves us a lot - maybe he wants to test us and see how much we love Him in return.

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

but M_Q HE is Allah, we r just mere human beings...gunehgaar...weak....evil....how can we possibly give anythng in return to Him...we just take and take and take from Him...

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

well maybe we should wake up and realize we better get our act together!

Re: Responsibility for Actions…Good vs. Evil

I agree with you and I want to add this

There is nothing you can do about it, it’s called Karma!
You want be something and you will be something else.
As long as your foundation is strong you can achieve your goals in any form of action.
Great people have rough back ground, as long as you have good attitude good intentions in your action, you can always dig through hill.
Here are some examples,

“When American businessman Steve Mariotti was assaulted by a student gang for a paltry 10 dollars, he did not go to the police. He threw his job and started a business training scheme to help students from low income communities make money the right way.”

Bill gate is a college drop out.

Ted turner is drop out from school.

Good luck..,

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

M_Q we "SHOULD" :D that's for sure...

:)

gpsy thanks :)
hmmm...
Bill Gates and Ted Turner are good examples...but for every positive example you have hundreds of bad examples...then what does that say about human nature in general? It is easier to succumb to the dark side than to jump back to the good one...
After all, not all of us are extraordinary... ?

Re: Responsibility for Actions...Good vs. Evil

I always wanted to be a bad ass when I grew up, but society denied my dream. Now I pretend to be a bad ass on GS, specially to behn ji M_Q and other insecure religious souls. :D

Hmmm I always wanted to be a "goody goody" :D I guess I still do...but my definitions of good and bad themselves have gotten messed up now :D

Re: Responsibility for Actions…Good vs. Evil

Irem, what the hell is wrong with you? Did it ever occur to you that your uncle didn’t like studying and load of work in Med school and dropped out? May be he enjoys being a bum. For gods sake stop classifying everything into good and bad. Going to med school doesn’t make someone Good.
