I am not sure about mechanical engineering.

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

Those with US degree and work experience have a huge advantage in securing a good paying jobs compared to locals. In addition if you have contacts over there, then you’re all set. I don’t have personal experience, but I know some who have been in the same position.
Good luck :k:

thanks all of u..
any more words of wisdom....

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

Dear,

I failed to get any idea of your work experience from this post, but considering you as a mechanical engineer with 10 years of experience, I have managed to make this summary for you.

Job Availability
In Pakistan, last 5 years have been mostly dedicated to IT and Telecom. Even some people, who opened their shops after doing EE cause of the unavailability of jobs some years back, are now enjoying their well-paid (20-120k on experience) jobs. Jobs for Mechanical and Civil Engineers are not as common. With your Ms. Degree and experience, you will definitely get a job but it may not satisfy your requirements of post or pay. At least as I have heard from friends, you will hardly manage to find any managerial post here in the beginning.

Pay and Post
I am considering you at some senior engineering post (chief engineer, design engineer, operation supervisor…). Most companies will pleasantly pay you 60,000+, right from the beginning as of your education and experience. I don’t know if it will be enough for you. Managerial post in factories (excluding personal one) is considered to be confidential here, unless you prove yourself exceptionally well to them. At this post in moderate to large companies, you will easily get 100,000+.

Job Location
Except for Pakistan Steel and a few others, most big companies (fertilizer, cement, etc.) are found in interior (rural) areas of Pakistan. If you are imagining getting a job in Pakistan Steel, forget it, it is nearly impossible unless you have some strong source (reference). So you must have to move to areas where your factory will be located.

Why not try small factories near Karachi or other big cities
They are not factories, they are self-owned business. They will hardly pay you 30k-40k and even then they will be paying you toooo much in their opinion. Their jobs are not defined well too. (I hope you catch what I mean)

But where my family will live?
Almost all big factories found in interior areas of Pakistan, have satisfactory (if not good) compounds attached with them. You can easily find good schools, compact but enough markets, mosques, playing ground and parks either in or very near to these compounds.

How many big factories can I find?
Well I don’t know exactly too, but at least I have personally heard of about 50+, though I have no detail about them. But definitely the number is in 3 digits at least.

Well pay, post is enough for me and I will be moving shortly
Don’t make any quick decision. It is better to take some vacation (1-2 months), come here, search for the factories, try to talk and negotiate yourself, and make a reasonable contract with them and sign it. Then take your time to shift back.

Think on…
I have tried my best to provide you as accurate information as I could have. Now there are many uncertainties in it too.

  • You may not find a job with a big company
  • You may not be satisfied with your compound
  • You cannot adjust
  • Things were going OK and then you …..

Think yourself too!!!

Some unrelated issues
Life here is quite different from US and other Western countries. So either you or your family may have problems in living here. Sometimes relocating family adjusts here easily, but close relatives makes thing complicated. So take your time.
[There are many examples of families (70% or more) who made a successful relocation, but some families (33%) have failed too.]

In some cases (mostly, if you choose a small company), jobs have no assurance. I mean they will refuse you with no reason and you will just have to accept them. In big companies this is almost rare but still there.

Weather may also hurt you, but it is not as big a factor.

Activities (sports, fun, markets…) for kids and women are too short here. Take this into account too; otherwise you may be willing to relocate to US again.

Notes
k means 1000. that is 30k=30,000
All numbers represent Pakistani Rupee.
I recalled my memory well and confirmed with 2-3 friends about every thing, but still you cannot say this post highly acurate.

Good Luck:k:

JAK for all the nice (free) advice…:jazak: :maulvidis
any more words ..I am still thnkng:confused:

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

I can give u a general situation than mechanical engineering.. I came back a yr back fom States- couple of yrs work and degree from there.. but had Pakistani work experience.. few things i considered were..

  • just come back now or stay there.. trhe longer one stays back its harder to be back and settle.. as they say lishtian jala ke aa jao..
  • Give urself 4-6 months settling time.. just dont come here for a month and try to get a job.. it rarely happens...
  • Things have changed very rapidly for last 5 yrs in Pakistan.. though mechanical engineering has always been good along with EE but my field Civil Engg.. got a real boost due to multi billion rupees projects by World Bank, Asian Dev Bank and scores of other agencies.. its harder to get a good civil engineer these days as we always try to hire them.. I am working on a world bank project an dmy core task is implementing Geographic Information System in towns of Punjab.. 10 yrs experience is a good benchmark.. Try lever brotheres or Pakistan Tobacco Company.. u can get more than Rs 100,000/month.. -Schooling for kids is no problem as there are scores of great schools around.. I am in lahore and cant give u much advice about Karachi but there are many guppies from Karachi here who can guide u.. -plus there are so many new areas where u can start ur own business .. explore those.. -good luck

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

Well dear,

please clarify:

10 straight years in Automotive industry? Where?
So you have worked in Pakistan too? Where in Pak and when?

As for me I am even not treated as a normal human being, man. People don't let me speak or even write and then they claim it is a free country and an open forum..

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

JAK:maulvidis
I am doing something similar..I have contact Shell Pak. Waiting for a response. Also I am using careerpakistan.org . They help reverse the brain drain with help from UNIDO…
Keep the advice coming…

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

if they don’t treat u like one , r u behaving like 1..
pak is a tuff place…but some 1 has to start bng merci:flower1: …we all need love…

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

I liked your approach of contacting the employer before you even move here. This is a very good approach these days.

Have you tried to contact your previous employers in Pakistan? All sorts of multinationals are in real groom these days. Please try to contact your previous employers as well. Things have really changed a lot…

Don’t just rely on some career building web site, broaden your approach and try to find as much companies active in Pak as you can on the Internet. Submit your details, expectations and whatever to them through email or mail. Some key area may be investment banking, fertilizers, cement, chemical, mechanical operation, Oil and Gas companies …you know it better.

The increase in the chances of having being under consideration by some company is the main improvement Pakistan has done perhaps. I mean most big companies are almost bound to have an independent Human Resource and Development centre. If you will submit your details, most companies will at least contact you once. With little luck and smartness you can easily avail that chance.

As for Pakistan, life is just fun and excitement for me. Once again, if I come to myself, there is not anything much wrong neither with my behavior nor with attitude of some other people involved. Just they will force their views on me without allowing me to clarify things or make my point or even vote independently (in some cases). I am feeling harassed, these days man. Human Rights are as important to us as having a reasonable job.

Good Luck:k:

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

^ don't be disappointed about being harassed...at least you can harass them back...in urdu and they will know what you mean....
Also, are you in pak ?

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

Well I am not that much stupid and rude to harass or discourage some one just cause he is trying to express himself. Yes, I am in Pak.

Re: Relocating back to Pak from US

just letting u know that sometimes people need to know that the way they r behaving is wrong and mean. But having patience is obviously the better route...
Ok if u r in pak,...did u relocate or u r just a good observer (i mean u seem 2 have in depth info. on this...) just curious..
