** REFUGEE PREVIEW**
Starring: Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor
Director: J P Dutta
Music: Anu Malik

J P Dutta's Refugee is definitely the most-awaited film among the forthcoming

spate of releases that will flood the box office in the next couple of months. The film
has generated enough interest among the buffs already and if the sales recorded by its audio cassettes in the market is any indication, Refugee should open to a grand
reception when it releases in June.

A lot is at stake with Refugee's release. For recession-hit Bollywood, this could be one film that will rake in the moolah bigtime. Coming as it is from the stable of J P Dutta - whose last release Border was a smash hit - the film raises further hope. It is also the launchpad for Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor, the two rising star offsprings who
are expected to shine on the Bollywood sky in the years to come.
And yes, a successful run for Refugee will prove that good, original scripts can also score in an era flooded with
unimaginative remakes and crass rehashes that Bollywood churns out with unfailing regularity.

Like his earlier Border, Dutta's Refugee has at its centre the division line that separates India and Pakistan. Only, while Border dealt with the mutual animosity unleashed by a Pakistani attempt to intrude upon Indian territory and the ensuing battle of Longewaala, Refugee takes a human look at the fate of denizens on both sides who were rudely unsettled from their own soil on the basis of creed and religion, owing to the very political act of Partition.

Thematically speaking Refugee is a love story set in the times of war. Abhishek and Kareena play the torn lovers whose love story must survive the travails of Partition. Does their romance survive the test? Do the lovers unite despite the odds? Like all his previous ventures, Dutta is keeping the end of the affair a closely-guarded secret this time too.
Youthful romance faced with stiff circumstantial resistance has always been a favourite theme with Bollywood filmmakers. From the vintage Mughal-E-Azam and Anarkali to contemporary blockbusters such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Maine Pyaar Kiya and Dilwaale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the formula has never failed to send the cash boxes ringing.

Dutta's novelty in this context is that he adds a political hue to the forces that work against the young pair's love story.
Music director Anu Malik has definitely come up with a winner after a long time. The melodious theme song Panchhi, nadiya, pawan ke jhoke is already a chart buster and must definitely rank among Malik's all-time greatest creations.
Singularly, it is also the best song that this year has seen so far.

Of course, Malik's melody would have remained incomplete in its beauty without Javed Akhtar's introspective lyrics. All said and done, the one question that Refugee will hopefully answer is whether Hrithik Roshan will get an able rival in his bid to become Bollywood's next superstar. And Abhishek Bachchan, for one, is definitely keeping his fingers crossed.

dil..dilsee..dil to akhir dil hai na

comes out in theatres tomorrow here in toronto…will watch it in a couple of days

Hasn't been out here yet in this part of the world. I am not much of an indian movie fan..but I have to say that the songs from that movie are really very nice. Specially these three,

"Panchi, nadiyaan pawan kay jhoonkay koi sarhad na inhay rokay," "Aisa lagta hai"
& "Mere Humsafar."

I think a job well done on music and lyrics by the combo of Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar.

I have seen it seen it seen it seen it

The film is very very very good,
I’m sure someone can write a better review once they have seen it…so I’ll leave that to the experts but this film is a winner…

I saw the movie, it was SICK!!! not the type u would want to see again and again. I didn't feel bad cause they made pakistanis seem the bad guys cause that was obvious. But i didn't like that they made it seem that a muslim girl would go against her religious teachings for a man from the other side of the border.

YEAH LIKE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED EVER UNTIL THIS FILM WAS RELEASED..
Com’on get a life..

dear mem sahib
Well if u know this or not the people at the border are staunch muslims, they don't go out without wearing a burqa and well they rarely go out. I would hv got on with the life's realities if it was filmed at places where it does happen.
still i hated the film i don't like films which hv war and all that stuff in it. Abhishek was good Karina as well but not the film.
These type of films only grow hatred among the two groups although in this film the two were brought togrther in the end, but the mujahideens were given a bad look.

sorry it was dear Gizzy ki Janno

It’s Mem to you..and Jaano to Gizzy

I don’t know what the people at the border are like.. wearing a burqa does not restrict you from falling in love…

I thought this film promoted love and peace between the both countries, the conversation between the two border patrol officers was very realistic, both were being as snidy as each other and all in all I think they tried to show that it doesn’t matter who you are or which side of the border you live.. love is love..and love brings people together…

The dialogue by the girls’ father when being questioned by the Pakistani officer was also very good and very powerful…

Also the dialogue at the end with Sunil and Jackie was also very good… very true…
I thought it was well written, very factual…very realistic..

Of course they showed the Pakistani terrorists but comon this is an Indian film, you have to expect it, like if the Pakistani film industry made a copy - they would never show Indians’ as the good so why expect the Indians to show themselves as bad and Pakistani as good ??

Alot of war in this film, but the love story will win the hearts of the crowds … I think it will do well…

Sorry Mem Saheb, but unless India is prepared to show hindu girls falling in love with muslim guys then we have to admit that the Indian film industry is slightly warped and very backward in it's attitude to muslim/hindu relationships.

Unless they are prepared to make films about ALL possibilities which actually reflect real life after all (Shah Rukh's wife is a hindu convert to islam, Azharuddin's wife is a hindu actress) then I think they should stay away from these topics until they develop a more mature attitude.

I suggest a film with this story line to redress the balance :

Hindu Brahmin girl is captured and held hostage by mujahideen but one of the soldiers falls in love with her and there is a happy ending when she becomes muslim and marries the hero who eventually puts down his guns and opens a flower shop in Mumbai.

My choice for the stars would be Shah Rukh for the mujahid hero, and Ashwairya Rai for the Brahmin girl. I think it would be a smash hit in India and Pakistan. Maybe, myself, Bombaykid and Rani could go and watch it together in a show of cross-cultural harmony?

Mr Extreme…

DREAM ON

So you liked my script then?

I dont think hero's religion is mentioned anywhere. he is also brought up in muslim family. but i could be wrong. i have not seen the film only read the story.

Yes Ullu - kaam ki baath kahi aap ne,
Although it’s assumed he’s hindu, nothing actually shows that he is… he is supposedly brought up by muslim parents Amna and Jaan Mohd.. played by reena roy and anupum kher …

Sure Mr. Xtreme…will do !! Later, I can also take you to a nice restaurant run by a local BJP MLA which serves delicious beef and Naan…and then wash it down with some Indian beer (Kingfisher) – what say !!!

anyways, although the religion of the refugee ( the guy's name in the film) is not mentioned anywhere but still even if he was a muslim he should hv waited to get married before having kid.

The guy's name in the film isn't mentioned anywhere? Don't you find that a bit strange?

What was the point of that?

Duh Mr XTREME… !!

Sehar just said that he is called ** REFUGEE ** in the film.. ?

aakhain hai yah button ???
