cgsecurity (dot) org / wiki / TestDisk
very excellent tool. last year while installing XP i accidentally formated a data HD. i thought i had lost everything but then i got this software. it recreated the whole partition info, indexes and everything else that was needed to restore my HD to its previous state. everything was recovered and not a single file was lost. just a few weeks ago my bro lost all data on one of his external HD and i used the same software to restore/recover the HD back to its previous state.
i hope it will help you aswell.

it deosnt work
show up dos screen for a sec and vanishes, thats it
Re: recovering files
If the recovery brought up files you had been working with a year ago, then I am afraid there isn't much you can do now. Windows has a funny way of writing to disk, so it is possible your newer files may have already been lost. Recovery programs may also produce "Frankenstein", in that, half of the file may be old and half new, or even a clobbered up version of two files. It depends on what had happened during the write.
You said you quickformatted the drive.
What happened, and why were'nt you making incremental backups of your work on CD/DVD if they were that important and long-term?
