You are right. I thought being happy was synonymous with spending 22 years with each other although they had the option of divorce previously also. Thus this factor of outside woman became the reason for their divorce. If the husband was not happy with his wife, they had bad relationship and he was genuinely looking for other women, he could have found many in his 22 years of marriage and he could divorce his wife anytime in those 22 years.
What I think is when the husband got that another women in his life, his relationship with his wife might not be strong enough that particular time to keep him loyal to his wife and he just found himself attracted towards that woman. They might or might not necessarily be going through a tough and bad marriage. But at that particular time period, his relationship with that outside woman was stronger than his 22 year long relationship with his wife which made him choose that woman over his wife. Thus the husband wife relationship can become weak at any moment (there can be many factors leading to this) and divorces can happen even after happy marriages. Obviously, the extent of happiness can be hidden from the public. But still…
