Personally, I also don’t think that a man is Islamically obligated (what’s ethical is another story) to ask his first wife for permission.

My understanding of religion is that he is obligated to ask permission. I used to think that another marriage isn’t valid unless the existing wife/wives agree and allow it?

Perhaps someone can enlighten me here.
