I see that many students these days dont feel the need to invest in Uni studies .. Alot of places University studies are expensive , completely understandable if one is feeling a financial restraint .. but other then this one valid reason, are there any more reasons for many students to not take interest in further studies?
It seems like some kind of trend is developing nowadays where University is not seen as a must have degree but rather as an option that can be taken up any other time in life ..
r u planing to open ur own uni … so many threads regardin uni … ? why dont u start som welfare schooling to take care of all needy n drop out students …
Unfortunately the needy and drop outs do it with their free will. Thats what the problem is. Not being able to find a place in University seems to also be a problem but its more like the mindset of students changing these days .. I become really upset when I see kids saying Uni is no good
Costs are increasing, job prospects are less attractive than they were, and in some cases, quick certifications puts them on an warning path sooner. Families that are not into education is another contributing factor.
Cb - true although it depends on the degree and institution. The difference in range can be substantial.
Also for an 18 yr old, money now so you could live it up may be more attractive.
Last, it is harder to get a first job for many grads and looking at how ppl were being just picked up right out if college just 5 years ago they could be disheartened that things are not as good,
i thin k the main reason is the fact that some families do NOT value education and they do NOT encourage their children to go for higher studies. in our countries, they think it's waste of time..."paRh likh kar kaun saa teer maar leNge?"...while in the west i've seen young kids getting caught in the immediate gains. they find employment [odd jobs] and, since they live parents, whatever money they make is more than enough for a good living...they lease good cars...etc. they lose sight of the benefits of good education.
here in Canada, money is never a problem...every poor kid who can NOT afford education past High School gets enough money in loans, grants and bursaries. no kid has any excuse NOT to persue higher education.
the kids and their parents have to set their priorities straight.
very much agree KKF and X2 .. I specially agree with the immediate gains bit .. this is where they need some councelling perhaps , to realize the difference between immediate gains v/s long term gains ..
With the stupid job market, its more important that you have actual skills and experience rather than fancy pieces of paper which no one gives a damn about when hiring.

not quite, does not work for many professions, nursing, education, medicine, law, engineering, accounting.
need the degrees, and then certifications in many cases. Most jobs postings have requirements for the fancy pieces of paper, and they are more important as people proceed further in their careers.
then you have the skill/experience issue of how u get experience if you can land a job
even with the bad job market, the unemployment rate of college grads is significantly lower than those without degrees, and for those with advanced degrees is even lower. The job market sucks, and many people are unemployed or underemployed, and many new grads are having a hard time finding a job...but they are as a group better off than their peers without degrees.
This is from a US perspective, I am not sure if it is similar in other countries.
