Allow me to define the definition of “reading” as was used recently by someone I was having a discussion with:
READING: reciting the words of the text without understanding
UNDERSTANDING: knowing the translation, reading the translation, comprehending the translation (translation may be basic with basic minimal outline understanding of historical context required, like information taught to children)
I have heard many Pakistanis say this: Reading the Quran (recitation without understanding) gets you sawab.
Can you please tell me what hadith says this, or where it says this in the Quran or which aalim provided this fatwa?
Thanks. I just need a background reference - I dont care to discuss it really - someone I know would like a reference and I can’t find it on the net).
She finishes a Quran MashAllah every month, but she reads in Arabic…
I told her, that Quran is a book of guidance…If you read it in Arabic, how much guidance are you getting? And what if the Quran had not been revealed in in Arabic but French or Sindhi…What would be the use of reading in a language you don’t understand?
She keeps saying it’s more Sawab, but my argument is, alright…But now after all this time shouldn’t you at least know what Allah :swt: is telling you to do Himself?
The hadeeth, if I remember correctly, is narrated by Hadhrat Aisha:razi2: which states that each letter of Quran bears 10 good deeds, pardon from 10 bad deeds, and elevation of status in the eyes of ALLAH to 10 more steps; something along that line… and the hadeeth specifically says that Rasoolulah:saw: was asked that even if Quran is read without understanding.. and Rasoolulah:saw: replied in affirmation.
Now, having said that.. reading Quran without understanding and getting sawaab is one thing but reading Quran with understanding bears a lot more sawaab if it is acted upon as well.
So, if someone reads Quran without understanding, IMHO, it is wrong to tell people not to read in Arabic at all… but it is always recommended to tell them to read it with understanding…
It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads a letter of the Book of Allaah will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem is a letter, rather alif is a letter, laam is a letter and meem is a letter.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2910; he said it is hasan saheeh. Also classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.
and the hadeeth specifically says that Rasoolulah (S) was asked that even if Quran is read without understanding.. and Rasoolulah (S) replied in affirmation.
Is that part of the hadith that Sadiyah posted, or are you thinking of another hadith, AQ?
^ that comment was required, neither does it fit the scope of this topic. PCG i have heard the same as AQ is saying, and while im not 100% certain, i would assume that reading the Quran in itself is sawab, understanding it offcourse is even better.
my word shud be reference enuff for u, i aint digging out exact things for u ( :p )....
reading Quran, as in plain reading, no understanding part, is the one mentioned in the hadith that promises sawaab for the reader....
reading translations/tafseer of the Quran, without its arabic script, is a good deed, which has its own reward, but not the reward covered by the hadith mentioned by AQ and sadiyah....
I'm interested in AQ's reference - the one he says where its explicitly stated that there is sawaab if you don't even understand. I need it in EXPLICIT terms.
^^ What type of reward? And are there different types of rewards for different rituals /deeds? How many sawabs does one get for praying compared to performing Hajj once in his/her life time? How many sawabs does one need to get into heaven?
^
sawab gets deducted once a person does a bad deed....
so theoretically u need just one sawab to enter heaven....
but if u do a lot of bad deeds, u can end up in negative even if u have performed hajj etc....
