Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, has been ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury suffered just prior to the team’s scheduled departure for the West Indies. Razzaq sustained the injury during a practice session on Monday at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and doctors have said that he might be out for up to three weeks.

“I am simply devastated. One moment we are practicing and planning for the big tournament and next moment doctors tell me I am out of it,” Razzaq told agencies. “It is hugely disappointing for me to go out this way,” said Razzaq, who would have been playing in his third World Cup, had it not been for the last-minute injury. Razzaq, who has played 229 ODIs for Pakistan, recently missed the Test series in South Africa because of an elbow injury.

“Razzaq suffered the injury during practice and we suspect it may be ligament damage or even a fracture. He is out for three weeks,” PJ Mir, the media manager of the Pakistan Cricket Board, told Cricinfo. “Azhar Mahmood will be his replacement.”

Mahmood, who was already kept on standby given the injury worries in the fast bowling line-up. Pakistan were already in a state of confusion as Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, the fastbowling spearheads, were in doubt to be fit in time for the World Cup.

Shoaib and Asif are currently in England for medical check-ups and were not present for the dope tests conducted by the board on the players in the World Cup squad. Shoaib had pulled out of Pakistan’s tour to South Africa after he picked up a hamstring injury during the second Test at Port Elizabeth. Asif, who played the entire tour, is carrying an elbow injury.

The two had tested positive for the banned substance nandrolone in October when the board tested players before the Champions Trophy. They were both handed bans from international cricket but in an unexpected turn of events a drugs tribunal, appointed by the board, reversed the judgement in December on account of the fact that the players were able to prove “exceptional circumstances” for taking the drug.

“It is a big blow. We were celebrating Umar Gul’s fitness boost when this sad news came,” Bob Woolmer, Pakistan’s coach, was quoted as saying by AFP. Gul had just been cleared to play after an ankle injury threatened his chances of making it to the Caribbean for one-day cricket’s premier tournament.

“It is a major blow for us because Razzaq is one of our main players,” Inzamam-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain said, in reaction to the news of Razzaq’s injury.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

it could be good thing for pak.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Although this injury maybe coincidental and one of those unfortunate things (c. Brett Lee) that one can't really do anything about, I have n't seen so many injured/unfit players in our squad as in the last couple of years under Woolmer and his hand-picked support team of good for nothing physios

Kyon bhai...In my opinion, Razzaq is one of those players who are tailor-made for the ODI format.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Looking at these injuries for different teams, one can easily say that there had been lot of non-stop cricket for last couple of years.

Never before we had so many palyers going down with injuries. This event comes after every four years, a dream of every player to be part of it. ICC should take notice of this and revise the schedule for post WC tours for every team.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Razzaq is definitely a blow for us - his batting lower down the order in the slog overs would be missed. As we saw in SA, Azhar could not do the same job that Razzaq with the bat. Azhar needs to bat higher to make his batting skills useful because he cannot slog.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

We're done for.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Agreed. More importantly I think there should be no cricket in the three months preceding the WC so players can rest before the mega event and any injured/unfit players have time to recover. That said two players (Lee and Razzaq) sustained injuries while training which's something you can't do much about and which may have nothing to do with their overall fitness or player burn-out

Re: Razzaq out of WC

yes he is. But he has been out of form for few months now.
Would not you like Sehwag and Agarkar to get unfit ? ;)

Re: Razzaq out of WC

**I just got an email from a close friend (who knows a relative of Razzaq) he said that he got hit in the knee with a full toss of his unprotected right leg while batting in the nets. You know how in the nets batsmen only wear one pad (the front one) so he had the same front pad on and got struck in the unprotected knee with a full toss.

I dont know who the bowler was. This is not a rumor.**

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Balleybaazs like Afridi and Razzaq are never in form or out of form.
Their performance usually depends on the alignment of the stars, the match situation, the size of the field, the state of the pitch etc.

Sehwag's problem, however, is that he is neither a slogger as Afridi nor a technically sound player as Tendulkar or Dravid. He is netiher here nor there...and that *mere dost *is a problem.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

^ so you are saying shewag is "dhobi ki billi na ghar ki na ghat ki" :D

wait and see all the players that dissapoint us will score in WI.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Although Razzaq is good in the one day game and has won matches for Pakistan, however, Azhar should be just as beneficial for the team. Accordingto reports Azhar has the green light to replace Razzy.
Mr. Inzi should stop relying on his buddies and work the team as a unit maximizing output according to talent.
Then again, only time will tell.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Azhar??

:D

Just when Pakistani supporters are wondering how to even make it to the semis without Shoaib Actor and Asif, here comes the whopper... Abdul Razzaq is out of World Cup due to a knee injury sustained during practice (its not even a manly excuse!). His place in the squad is now taken by a visibly pregnant Azhar Mehmood. While Razzaq has pedestrian quality bowling, his batting is famously said to have only two gears ... first or top. And suffice is to say, when he is in top gear, there is no better sight for a Pakistani fan, especially in the death overs. Big big loss, in my view.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

lassan lug gai mamma. ab kuch nahain bacha. dream on for the WC.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Huge loss..I believe Razzaq was the only in form tullaybaaz in the team. This sucks! too bad we can't blame the spinach this time :(

Re: Razzaq out of WC

Ouch!

Re: Razzaq out of WC

I think razaaq is a good player for pakistan to keep things tight during the middle overs. he is very good with the bat too. I would pick razaaq in place of afridi or azhar mahmood any time. I think he is more consistant than other two. Besides he had mostly done well against Indians :D.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

I think Azhar is a better bowler with new ball and Razzaq is better with old ball since he knew reverse swing. Azhar is a better slip fielder than Razzaq, since Razzaq isnt good in field anywhere.

Re: Razzaq out of WC

may be not in the slip cordon, but from the outfield he has a good pick up and throw.
