So far in your career , what has your experience been ..
How many job applications have you made that led to how many interviews and finally job offers?
Do you think in recent times that ratio has changed in your respective professions?

Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
In my experience so far I make about 10-12 applications , coz my area of expertise has limited job options … so the ratio usually works out like this :
12 Job applications = 3 interviews = 1 Job
In many cases it involves compromise on location or salary .. but then thats due to recession these days !
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Hmm I applied to at least 25 job openings
Got 8 interview calls, some of them fizzled out at the phone interview stage
Did 5 in person job interviews, and had 4 job offers
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Lucy , thats an awesome ratio mashallah
thanks for sharing ..
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Hmm, me I applied for hundreds of jobs literally before I finally got one after three months of rigorous job search. This was in some other country, so maybe the local experience was a factor. I couldn’t even get one interview call, the only interview got me the job.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Ali , you are right .. when you post applications in a different country , the ratio of applications pretty much doubles to gaining a successful job offer …
I know for a fact coz recently I was doing a project at my work place and we just wanted to sort of find out from interns and 2-3 experience range candidates what job ratios they had …
those who were here on visit visa’s and had no local experience actually made upto 450 applications and then too most did land interviews but didnt end up with any job offers… I guess thats due to strict immigration laws in place …
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Applications: around 1,000
Job Interviews: around 10-12
Jobs offered: 2 ![]()
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
hitman , what industry do you work in ? I think it also largely depends on the specific fields and job situation in them …
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
around 30 applications… 3 interviews…no job yet ![]()
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Nomi, sorry to hear that mate .. when this kind of situation arises just up the number applications made … the fact that you are interviewing is a positive sign … so increasing the number of applications may lead to more interviews and if you still dont manage to get a job , then read up loads of material to enhance your interview skills .. it will help for sure … good luck mate ![]()
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
i am already applying left right and centre…
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
hmmm .. well its a struggle , perhaps various factors kick in due to different market dynamics … have you explored other avenues of job huntng , like for example word of mouth , direct networking , etc ?
Waise I remember all of my life i have been told one rule to follow be it in the job , if failing to hit target , increase the basic activity and the output will be greater … in this case it means continuing to apply to jobs left right and center and one of these days you will hit home ![]()
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
It will help if you tell your expertise , that way people might be inspired to pursue your field of expertise.
Alhumdulillah I did not have to apply I posted my resume in a couple of IT related job boards and I started getting calls from recruiters , it was about 12 years ago. They all wanted me to have interview with consulting companies , but I was not interested in consulting so I was declining , then I got one interview for a non consulting job and got the job. I had most in demand skill at that time known as Oracle Financials in those days.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
That is the only way to get the job man. Do not lose hope , there is on job out there with your name on it.
After I got my degree long time ago I was doing the same , I was interviewed on a daily basis because I was indiscriminate in applying for job. Most of the time the jobs were not consistent with my degree or I was considered over qualified but then I got the job of my dreams after 3 months of that grueling experience.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
A well written job specific resume could get more searches and high chance of candidate interview.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
Agree with STA - It needs to be specific to the job spec. It is definitely quality over quantity. Mashallah, I have been lucky so far. During my student days I had about 3 interviews and got all three jobs. After i graduated my success rate was still good. I applied for about 4 jobs, I went through the application thoroughly with a tooth-comb ensuring I filled it in meeting all the job spec, etc and highlighting how any experience etc was relevant to the posts. This ensured my applications were complete and gave me the best possible chance of an interview. Mashallah, I was successful in 3 and heard back pretty soon and for the fourth I heard back about 2 months later - apparently it was a long vetting process including security clearance etc, i turned this one down as I was already in a job that i wanted. I had 2 internal applications one of which was successful leading to a post abroad and another was a job-share.
perverseness is key! and if you get knocked back, dust yourself off and try again.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
I agree with mr Wong its all perseverance, the first job is the most challenging. If you get some good experience under your belt, then sometimes jobs hunt you down. I have once got a job which I didn’t apply for, was hunted down through linked.com. Never lose hope!
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
In the end I feel no matter how good your resume is or your interviewing skills are , its just a matter of knowing your field really well .. keeping an eye on the right formula i.e how many applications will lead to interviews and then job offers …
This analysis will also help you determine where you are faltering and what changes are required in you or your job hunt tools …
and when we say up the number of job applications , doesnt mean one starts applying to every job around … Often on sites like Monster and Reed , for an average job post we will get about 80 CV’s and honestly most of them are irrelevant CV’s that are sent directly into the junk … So keeping focus on the right kind of role is imperative …
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
^^ True CB. What helps is also putting together a good cover letter and tailoring your resume according to the position you’re applying to.
Re: Ratio of Jobs applied:interviews: job offers
you know Lucy , I still get surprised why so much attention is paid to the cover letter .. i see so many CV’s every day and have hardly ever read a cover letter .. i skip it and go straight to the CV …
years in HR now and hardly seen any other colleagues read cover letters !
