Pakistan captain Latif faces suspension

AP SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 06, 2003 08:29:27 PM ]

MULTAN: Pakistan captain Rashid Latif faces a possible two to three match suspension after Bangladesh officially complained that he knowingly claimed a dropped catch on the third day of their third cricket Test at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Samiul Hasan confirmed the charge, saying Latif’s case was scheduled to be heard later today.

Bangladesh officially complained to match referee Mike Procter after close of play yesterday, accusing the wicketkeeper of violating the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct since he failed to tell the Umpire he dropped a catch and accepted the dismissal.

Bangladesh officials say Latif dropped batsman Alok Kapali behind the wickets off Yasir Ali’s bowling when Kapali had scored 22 runs.

“Bangladesh manager M A Latif has lodged the complaint to match referee Mike Procter on Friday,” Hasan said.

Television footage appears to back up the Bangladesh claim, with the ball appearing to pop out Latif’s hands as he rolled over twice.

The five match one-day series against Bangladesh starts in Multan from September 9.

Pakistan clinched the three-Test series 3-0 today with a thrilling one-wicket victory against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, lodged an official complaint to match referee Mike Procter over a catch taken by Pakistan’s wicket-keeper/captain Rashid Latif to dismiss Alok Kapali in their second innings.

TV replays cast doubt on the dismissal but Latif insisted: **"If I had been convinced that I had not taken a clean catch, I would have called the batsman back.

“I dived, took the catch, rolled over and than just threw the ball to Inzamam. The umpires found nothing wrong with the catch. The batsman didn’t notice anything wrong.”

Rubbish!

Latif is one of the few keepers (infact only one playing these days) who dont even appeal if he is not convenced that the bataman is out unlike other keepers who appelas for almost everything that leaves the bat closely or hit the batsman on the pad.

He is one of the v few honest players playing around these days (honest when it comes to out or not out), I cant even think that he can claim anything wrong or atleast he cant claim dismissel if he is not sure that the batsman was out. Period!

^^ I agree with that. And looking at that dismissal again and again, one can easily find that the ball popped out of his hand as he rolled over, and previuosly ball was in his control. But anyways lets see, what Referee says abuot it.

A cheap try of the Bangladeshis to weaken the Pakistani team and by that increasing their own chances in the upcoming ODI matches.

I have seen the TV replay and it was a perfect catch. He just let the ball go on the second rollover. That claim by the Bangladeshis is just ridiculous.

^^
Having seen the replay, still such views ?

Think of Rashid Latif as an Indian Wicket Keeper and then watch the the replay again. I am sure you will not think "He just let the ball go on the second rollover"

The Game Responds:

*As much as I hate the scrawny ass *******, I don't think his past behavior suggests that he would try to do such a thing; specially against Bangladesh. I'm not at all biased here as I hold the same views for Tendulkar and Dravid when it comes to sporting spirit. Really. People, That Is All.*

MULTAN, Sept 6: Pakistan captain Rashid Latif faces an anxious wait after attending a hearing, called by ICC match referee Mike Procter, on Saturday evening on an official complaint lodged by Bangladesh team.

Rashid, who attended the meeting accompanied by Pakistan manager Haroon Rasheed, will know his fate after Procter, the former South African all-rounder, announces his verdict at press conference on Sunday afternoon. The nature of offence will only then become known.

Bangladesh have accused wicket-keeper Rashid of acting in an unsporting fashion and bringing the game into disrepute by not calling back Alok Kapali after the ball seemed to have popped out of his gloves during the visitors’ second innings on Friday morning.

The UAE-based channel covering the current series, repeatedly showed the incident when it happened.

But the fact of the matter is that Rashid had dropped the ball after rolling over twice after spectacularly taking the catch off debutant paceman Yasir Ali

Asoka e Silva, the umpire standing the bowler’s end, had promptly raised his finger once he saw the ball going into Rashid’s gloves without waiting for the full course of action to complete.

And if there was any doubt in de Silva’s mind, he should have consulted his partner Russell Tiffin for confirmation whether the catch was taken cleanly or not. And further, if even Tiffin was unsure, he should have asked Aleem Dar, the TV umpire, to clear the matter by watching the incident on the monitor.

Despite the added facility of modern technology, the international umpires are reluctant to refer such decisions to the third umpire.

Had both de Silva and Tiffin used a bit of commonsense, this unnecessary fuss would have never cropped up at all.
**
Finally, had Bangladesh won the third and final Test, would they raise the issue? It is invariably difficult to digest such a shattering defeat after being so close to maiden Test victory.

Latif faces ban over disputed catch
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 6, 2003

Rashid Latif, Pakistan’s captain, faces a possible ban if found guilty of violating the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct during the third Test against Bangladesh at Multan.

Bangladesh lodged an official protest yesterday evening, claiming that Latif knowingly claimed a dropped catch during the day’s play. It is alleged that Latif failed to tell the umpire that he had grounded the ball which dismissed Alok Kapali.

Latif appeared to pull off a spectacular take flying in front of first slip, but television replays showed the ball popping out of his gloves as he got up from the floor after rolling over twice.

The Wisden Bulletin thought that the catch was dubious. “Was Latif in control of the ball for a sufficient length of time? Perhaps, but clause three of Law 32, which tries to define what constitutes a fair catch, states: **`The act of making the catch shall start from the time when a fielder first handles the ball and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement.’ It is the last part of the clause that Latif arguably did not fulfil.” **

Five-game ban for Latif

Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has been banned for five one-day internationals after match referee Mike Procter upheld a complaint over a controversial catch.

Procter said Bangladesh had lodged a complaint against Latif for claiming a catch on Friday, the third day of the third Test.

“I have listened to both parties at length and feel there is good evidence against Latif,” Procter told a news conference.

The incident happened when Latif dived to take a low catch to dismiss Bangladesh’s Alok Kapali for 22 off the bowling of Yasir Ali.

Umpire Asoka de Silva did not refer the dismissal to the third official, but the tourists later claimed that TV replays showed the ball hit the ground.

Latif attended a post-match hearing in Multan, together with team manager Haroon Rashid, after leading his side to a one-wicket win, giving them a 3-0 whitewash in the series and denied suggestions of cheating.

“If I had been convinced that I had not taken a clean catch and that the ball popped out of my gloves before I completed the catch motion, I would have called the batsman back,” he said.

“I dived, took the catch, rolled over and then just threw the ball to Inzamam.”

As Pakistan face Bangladesh in a five match one-day series, Latif will be available to face South Africa in the next home series.

Latif also appeared before an ICC referee during the World Cup earlier this year but an allegation that he made a racist remark to Australia’s Adam Gilchrist was dismissed by Clive Lloyd.

He was subsequently in hot water after sending an unauthorised letter to the ICC in which he claimed players were still being approched by would-be match-fixers.

Latif eventually issed an apology to the Pakistan Cricket Board for failing to ask their permission.

weird decision. Unlucky Latif, because several times he has called the batsman back and several times he indicated to umpires that the ball didnt carry in his career. Anyways oppurtunity for a youngster to make his mark in absence of Latif.

inzimam is named captain for one dayers

*Inzamam-ul-Haq has been named captain in Latif's enforced absence. Kamran Akmal will keep wicket. *

btw, who is this Kamran Akmal ??

sorry..

Yaar the same Kamran Akmal who said (while playing in ENG) that he can’t join the training camp the PCB organized for the BD-series because his Passport was in a locker and the key for that Locker was with the team boss who is away on vacation :rotfl: :rotfl: :hehe: :hehe:

^^ :rotfl:

Since I haven't seen the replay of the catch, I can't really comment but if we look at Rashid's past, he's clean.

Rashid should accept this ban and hopefully he wont' come out with his weekly editorial letter to prove his innocence. It just doesn't suit. We all know and have respect for him!

This is quite unfortunate. If Latiff has a history of calling batsmen back and correcting umpire's decisions re catches taken by him, then this ban basically tells him that he is a liar. The fact of his history (assuming they are facts because I haven't followed it but others state that) should be sufficient to give him the benefit of doubt and not criminalize what could be a genuine mistake. A ban is quite telling and a ban for 5 is quite serious.

Is the clip available online anywhere?

Bull**** !! when it comes to double standards, you guys beat everyone. Fact is Rashid LAtif Cheated and violated the rules and the point that he has been given a much harsher punishment tells us about it. What an example he has set as the captain of the TEAM.

Remember this thread :- http://www.gupistan.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=97190&highlight=ganguly+catch

Let me quote something from similar threads and refresh your memory :-

“didnt Hansje Cronje have a clean name…
and then all of a sudden it turned out to be what we all know now…
so a crimical is not a criminal unless proven and once he is found guilty no use looking at how long he was NOT CAUGHT…”

For all of you who are :crying: about Latif’s spotless record here is what many of you guys said :-

…having a spot-less record and all, is no defence. Having no blemish on your record just means you haven’t done anything wrong, YET! Its not a license to run amock with cricket rules. "

^^ so you are saying in other words that Rashid has done it before and didnt get caught??

I cannot post a video file here but i have with me the hightlights of the match when in a crucnh situation against England in 2001, Waqar was bowling and batsman nicked it, Rashid dived in front and took the catch, batsman started walking and Rashid told the umpire that it didnt carry.. even the video evidence was inconclusive. And thats just one example

To relate something of Hansie Cronje's incident to this one is totally absurd, but oh well, why did i expect something more solid from you?

anyways the matter should be closed as far as Rashid is concerned coz i dont think he will get any sort of relaxation... and appealing will only prolong the issue.
