The girl’s father was also fined and warned the family would be branded outcasts from their village if he did not pay. According to human rights activists, the girl, who was quickly married after the attack, was divorced weeks later after medical tests revealed she was pregnant.
The girl was raped by a 20-year-old villager in Brahmanbaria district in April last year. Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper reported that she was so ashamed following the attack that she did not lodge a complaint. Her rape emerged after her pregnancy test and Muslim elders in the village issued a fatwa insisting that the girl be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment.
Her rapist was pardoned by the elders. She told the newspaper the rapist had “spoiled” her life. “I want justice,” she said.

Just because people have muslim names, that does not mean they are muslims. These kinds of incidents only happen in societies that lack education, irrespective of their religios beliefs.
IT has NOTHING to do with islam or islamic countries....these are doings of ignorannt ppl following shaitan. dont malign Islam.

this type of punishment for victims is common in extreme islamic countries. It might not have anything to do with islam (I lay no claims on knowledge of islam)

I think it is necessary to take a fair perspective on things. While I agree that it might be a common occurrence in Islamic countries, it is not right to generalize. Uneducated people do this. These kind of incidents are common in parts of Africa, India etc.

I am sure you'd have your references checked but citation needed in india for rape victim being lashed/stoned punished. I have heard cases where public gave a severe beating to rapist or rape victims were marginalized..

well...can you tell us how many times rapists have been sentenced in these societies...
and what is the criteria...how the rape victim is treated by the court...

NOO country is Actually islamic (xcept for mayb saudi)...... ye sure dey have islamic laws.. but dey dunt really follow it.. if they were going by the islamic law.. da GURL wud have been pardoned..and the rapists wud have been sentenced to death...
in saudia Arabia.. which is DEFNTLY an islamic country... they DO follow this rule..... i lived in riyadh..and over dere.... if someone had raped a gurl.. he had automatic death sentence..no questions asked.. bcoz dat is the punishment for rape..and damrite it shud b!!

The Arabic word ightisab (rape) refers to taking something wrongfully by force. It is now used exclusively to refer to transgression against the honor of women by force.
Islam has a clear stance which states that this repugnant action is haram (forbidden) and imposes a deterrent punishment on the one who commits it.
The punishment for rape in Islam is the same as the punishment for zina (adultery or fornication), which is stoning if the perpetrator is married, and one hundred lashes and banishment for one year if he is not married.
Moreover, Ibn `Abdul-Barr (may Allah bless his soul) said
The scholars are unanimously agreed that the rapist is to be subjected to the hadd punishment if there is clear evidence against him that he deserves the hadd punishment, or if he admits to that. Otherwise, he is to be punished (that is, if there is no proof that the hadd punishment for zina may be carried out against him because he does not confess and there are not four witnesses, then the judge may punish him and stipulate a punishment that will deter him and others like him). There is no punishment for the woman if it is true that he forced her and overpowered her. (Al-Istidhkaar, 7/146).

If the use of a weapon was threatened, then he is a muharib, and is to be subjected to the hadd punishment described in the verse in which Allah says (The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter) (Al-Ma’idah 5:33).
So the judge has the choice of the four punishments mentioned in this verse and may choose whichever he thinks is most suitable to attain the objective, which is to spread peace and security in society, and ward off evildoers and aggressors

Wel I spent my childhood in Jordan and Saudi. Both countries have a serious problem with honour killings and rape. Actually spent 9 years in Riyadh in the 80s, and the place was really dangerous for women. They never left home with out a male relative. So unless you are telling me that Saudi has changed over the last 20 years, I don't believe you.
Let make this clear, I said Islamic countries and not Islam!!! Most Muslim countries are tribal, and women are considered the property of the tribe. So unless they ditch this patriachal tribal culture, these type of incidents will continue.

in that case why don't muslims create a movement to change these repugnant disgusting immoral laws and practices? the whole muslim world erupted in opposing the Mohammed cartoons - if this sort of punish the victim thing is so prevealent, why doesn't that bother you enough to start a movement?
I am fairly certain that such movements exist - go find them, support their cause. Don't sit here and defend whether this is a problem of Islam or just Islamic country. Just go stop the practice.
