poor poor girl, i don't know how she will ever get over this horrific act, also her friend who got beaten and had to witness her being raped, how he will get over that either i don't know.

well north india is pretty much same as pakistan as far as morality goes. delhi is between punjab and UP. this is the land where blaming women for everything and anything is the culture and norm among the uneducated.

I guess no one here seems to have all the details about this incident.
1-If a girl is "going out" with one guy, she is seen as halal for every other man.
2-If the girl is in vulnerable situation and she is NOT from a resource full background then that too a recipe of disaster.
It good to punish people, but our behaviour around expressing/fulfilling biological needs, need a million more year to evolve.
Also it has nothing to do with respecting or not respecting women.
Its what you do when you don't respect woman from you heart. How you behave then ?
And what if she is vulnerable ?? And you are a low level mother-ff how you behave then ??
Trust me that need another million year.

trust me law of 4 witness is least of the problems.
Its easy to find some thing so obvious and make noise about it, blaming every thing on it.
Thats why you hear so much discussion about that law.

Maybe my geography is bad but since when Pakistan and KSA became part of India and maybe my knowledge of religions is poor but how come what happened in India is being tied to Islam?
No idea why Pakistan and Islam is dragged in to every negative thread!
Last time it was about an Indian woman and her abortion issue in Ireland and Islam was dragged in that also.

I hear from a source in India than some people are blaming the girl for the rape and saying what was she doing out late at night watching a movie with a male friend. That the rape was a punishment for the girl.
I thought that India was more progressive than Pakistan but it seems that India is more backward than Pakistan. The reality in India is much different from the India that is portrayed in Bollywood.
Some ppls who U are talking about are always present in each societies at all times. So they really do not count when it comes to make a statement.

My source tells me that people are blaming the girl, and saying that it is not our hindu culture for girls to be going out watching movies with guys late at night.
To hell with their rotten culture, these ppls have no guts to come out in open and make their views known.

whoa! It is the same logic I have seen our people using to abuse women. There are people who mistreat women on streets of Pakistan because they think they didn't dress properly. I even saw a Saudi video where some boys were "playing" with some full-burqa clad girls who had ventured out without a male relative.

Someone on a news channel was talking about how they thought women-only train carriages, buses etc may not be such a good idea after all as mens' attitudes aren't changing.. Have to admit I sort of agree..
There doesn't seem to be much info about the victim herself.. I saw on AJ that her condition seems to be deteriorating today after she had been getting better and was taken off the ventilator.. I hope she's ok and those disgusting animals are punished properly.. To me it seems more like attempted murder than 'just' rape (obviously beaten and left for dead along with her friend).. Surely the death penalty or life imprisonment could apply here?

Rape is a horrible thing. It is not about culture or even lust at all. It is all about power. Indian women today are breaking barriers. They work, bring food to the table, give birth... They multitask. In the dark ages of yesterday, the man was the head of the family, he would bring in the moolah, the wifey and kids were completely dependent on him. That is not true anymore. Many weak souled good for nothings, instead of changing with the times and treating the women as equal partners, feel threatened and commit such heinous acts just to show they are still powerful. Then there are sheeple justifying it saying that the girl dressed provocatively and against religion/culture and deserved this. Yeah. I have seen men roam about bare chested or in baniyans and in their dhotis/lungis pulled above their knees in the summer and never have I seen a horde of women so overcome by lust that they gang up and sexually abuse the man. If women can control themselves, they why can't men? If they can't then they are the ones that deserved to labelled as the "weaker sex", not women These are all pointless excuses blaming the victim. What need to change is peoples attitude. But how we can go about doing it, I am not sure. I have seen well educated men behave horribly. So just educating the masses is not enough.

Now, woman gang-raped in a hospital in MPWoman who had gone to the hospital to get her baby treated was allegedly gang-raped by three sweepers.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, came to light when the woman along with her husband filed an FIR with Gopalganj police station.
Police today said the three sweepers followed her when she went to the toilet and allegedly raped her after threatening to take her life.

Condemning the incident, Leader of the Opposition in Madhya Pradesh assembly Ajay Singh on Tuesday said that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had talked about guaranteeing the safety and dignity of woman but “he has failed to do anything in this regard” and demanded that the government take steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Woman gang-raped, dumped on road in Delhi - Khaleej Times
A woman in her late 30s was gang-raped by three people and dumped in a south Delhi locality, police said Thursday. One of those accused has been detained.
The victim was found lying on the roadside in the Kalkaji area of the capital around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the other two accused are auto-drivers.
A case has been registered at the Kalkaji police station and the woman has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The incident took place days after a 23-year-old physiotherapist was gang-raped and brutally tortured by five men and a juvenile in a moving bus in the city.

I have to take some exception with the thesis, maybe the title, of this thread. New Delhi being the "Rape Capital of India". I submit, rape is as prevalent, if not more so, in other parts of India as it is in New Delhi. I would even state, that rape is less common in New Delhi than it is in other parts. People simply hear about it because women in New Delhi report it.
Instead of simply looking at legislation, Indians should do some soul searching and look at our culture, religion, attitudes towards women, and education. There is no silver bullet. What happened to this girl is horrible, but it's no more or less horrible to what happens to women daily in India.
