Is Rana Naveed under heavy pressure of carrying a label of front-like strike bowler for Pakistan, or is it really the “over-confidence” that (conveniently) allows him to bowl the largest amount of no-balls in every match, not to mention short and wide deliveries every other ball? Statistics reveal the following:
First ODI
Bowled excellent at the end of the first innings, and finished with the figures of
10 0 62 4
However:
Innings Extras: (b 5, lb 2, w 3, nb 6) = 16
(Highest extras from the pick of the bowlers) 6 No-Balls Total, 5 from Rana
Second ODI
Horrible figures -
7 0 60 0 **Average = 8.57 - Highest**
Innings Extras: (lb 6, w 5, nb 3) = 14
(Highest extras from the pick of the bowlers) 3 No-Balls Total, 2 from Rana
Third ODI
Desperate measures, once again by the strike bowler -
8 0 72 0 **Average = 9.00 - Highest**
Innings Extras: (lb 11, w 6, nb 5) = 22
(Highest extras from the pick of the bowlers) 5 No-Balls Total, 3 from Rana
The question arises: Is it the dual pressure to perform, the over-confidence, or the lack of imagination (or anything in between)?
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
Rana has all the qualities of a team player ie hardworking, committed, always there for his teammates. BUT, he has always been an average bowler who has been projected wrongfully by interested people as a front line bowler.
Accept for what Rana is, his failures will not surprise people.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
And once again, posts like these are a necessity at this point (and yes, we most definitely are “sticking” with our team, no doubt. Criticize at your will), and credit should be given where it is due. If the roles were to be reversed, it would have been Pakistan’s victory, with Razzaq smashing the ball all over the ground. Dhoni played extremely well, and single-handedly grabbed the silver plate away from Pakistan. A well-deserved half-century under pressure. One of the fantastic innings of this series, which I am sure he will remember for a long, long time. Two thumbs up!

fartguru bhai, I agree on the fact that he is certainly one of the most hard-working players in our team, and a 'thinking' bowler at that (a refresher from Sami, of course), however, when you put him alongside Shoaib and Asif, and compare, he seems to perform at least better than his average when the former gets into the attack. As of right now, he seems to be less-than-an average pacer, who is solely relying on his seaming skills on flat-batting surfaces.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
Some of you posters are so panicky that is not even funny. Dont forget Rana was highest wicket taker in last year and he proved to be a huge success in India, West Indies and Australia.
Yes he is inexplicably out of form and should be given a rest but I wont be surprised if he comes back with a bang even in this series.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
I agree with you, it has been Shoaib Akhter who has made life easier for the lesser mortals. With the arrival of M Asif, comparisons will be made and questions will be asked. Iam afraid Rana has run out of gas, needs a well deserved rest.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
Its only 3 match stunt, he has came back from an injury. We must keep this in mind.
He is a hardworking player and offers alot when fully fit. Dont forget that low form is part of the game and some times u cant just perform. Does nt means that now u r a liability.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
I agree with 5ho@ib. Is there anyone else in this world who takes a u-turn faster than us? We make them travel from sky to earth in no time. This is simply not fair! We all have good and bad days and so could have our team and our players. That's definitely not the end of the world. Is it?
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
dhobi mian I'm glad you opened this thread otherwise I was gonna do that. Rana is a wonderful bowler, or so it seemed after seeing long depressing era of Mohammad Sami. But seems like Rana is getting in the same business of "shorting", he bangs the ball short more than good length deliveries, he has not learnt to stop no-balls, he has not learnt to NOT throw juicy leg-side balls. He needs to look at Asif now where he pitches. Even Gul bowled better than him, atleast stats wise :p
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
Rana has caught a well known disease common in ALL Pakistani fast bowlers. As soon as they gain some moderate success, the syndrome starts. Symptoms include glaring, picking fights with batsmen, spraying rubbish all over the wicket etc. This leads to lots of boundaries, which leads to bouncers, which leads to more boundaries.
Akhtar has suffered from this syndrome, and thankfully recovered. Sami continues to suffer and now Rana is the latest victim. Lets hope Asif manages to avoid it.
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
There wa snothign wrong with Rana. He bowled as good as Umar. His badluck is that his timing was bad. Umar bowled when Asif already pegged india back by taking 2 wickets. That was time to consolidate.
If Umar ha sbowled at the time Rana bowled. His figure couldnot have been any different. Both of them are good bowlers ( For India ;) ).
Re: Rana Naveed becoming a liability for Pakistan?
Rana made his mark without Shoaib. He saved our butts in india and Australia when shoaib was made to cool his heals in Pakistan. So it is absolutely pathetic to say that It is Shoaib who has made life easier for him speaks a lot about your vision about other bowlers.
It is sad on part of our nation that we are 'chadhtay suraj ke pujaari' Let Asif perform below par in two three games and knives will be out for him.
