Ramadhan in USA

So are people following the Fiqh Council of North America and starting saturday 09/23 or going with moonsighting.com and starting sunday 09/24?

Re: Ramadhan in USA

ISNA has published their calendar which says that Ramzaan will start Saturday, Sep 23rd and Eid will be Monday, October 23rd. No moon sighting is planned by ISNA.

This view is severely criticized by various local and regional Islamic organizations, who insist that sighting the moon is sunnah and required before an Islamic month begins.

So pretty much it comes down to which organization you associate with and where you plan to offer your Eid ki namaaz.

In the Bay Area, MCA (Muslim Community Association) follows ISNA. Almost all other muslim organizations, masjids and communities disagreed with ISNA will follow the Islamic Sharia Council of Northern California. They will attempt to sight the moon on Saturday night. And since I offer my Eid prayers with them, so I will likely stick to the more traditional way of starting Ramzaan (big mystery that will be resolved by the announcement of moon sighting).

Another interesting thing is that according to ISNA calendar, today is Shabaan 29. According to every other calendar, today is Shabaan 28. So, technically we can be off by as much as two days, though chances are that moon will be sighted on Saturday.

So, for us, the first of Ramzaan will be Sunday, September 24th, Insha Allah.

Ramzaan Mubarak!

Saudi Arabia declares Saturday first day of Ramadan

Published: Friday September 22, 2006

Riyadh/ Amman- The highest legal panel in Saudi Arabia on Friday announced that the first day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will be on Saturday, according to state-run Saudi television. The announcement was based on evidence given by eyewitnesses that they had managed to sight the Ramadan crescent after sunset on Friday in compliance with strict Islamic teachings.

Almost all other Arab countries in the region usually follow the Saudi decision in this respect.

Few hours left :) Ramadan Mubarak Everyone.

Is there a confusion in your mind about the title of this thread? This thread is about USA. There is another thread right below it, that is about Middle East.

Jazak Allah Khairun!

Re: Ramadhan in USA

It’s pretty much the same in Canada. Many would be going with ISNA, whereas many others are going with Middle East. Then there are some who will depend on local moon sighting.

I’m with the local moon sighting.

FF, I don’t think moonsighting.com picks sides. I believe they only state views and opinions of others as well as show some sort of map. I reckon they got themselves in trouble last year for not clarifying that something posted on their website was not their stance, but someone else’s that they posted.

I just read in Religion forum that ICNA would stick to the traditional method and would look for the moon tomorrow.

Here’s the link: http://www.icna.org/icna/home/2.html

Re: Ramadhan in USA

irs saturday here in soudi.....

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Moon sighting ofcourse!
Will see if Montreal sees the moon or not. Will post!

Re: Ramadhan in USA

that site is for ICNA and not ISNA (u mentioned isna in the post but gave link for icna)

Re: Ramadhan in USA

What time is sehri tomorrow? Also, just for clarification: must we finsh eating prior to the sehri timing or we can start eating after this time?

Thanks

Re: Ramadhan in USA

The sunnah of sehri can be fulfilled anytime after midnight ...u can eat til fajr time...fajr time varies depending where you live so you might want to check with your local masjid.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

My bad! I apologize.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

no problem...just wanted to bring that to your attention. :)

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Angel Eyes -- Fajr at around 5:46 in our area.

I think ISNA is using moonsighting.com as the basis for their decision to start Saturday. One of our local mosques still hasn't announced; the other is going with ISNA, so I guess we'll be fasting tomorrow.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Oh ok..
i would've prefered to go wid icna n moonsighting
but ofcourse will have to follow my nearby Masjid which is going wid saudia arabia and doing it tommorrow!

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Sun 9/24

Re: Ramadhan in USA

We're going with our local mosque, according to which Ramadan will begin on Sunday, Insha Allah.

Don't know how ISNA announced Saturday as the first day, since moonsighting.com also mentions that moon will not be visible anywhere in the U.S. on Friday.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

^Are you sure? I interpreted a bit differently. Seems it could be visible (but not that it necessarily is visible). They've calculated the birth of the moon tho.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Sunday!

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Simple fact is that you have to be able to see the moon. If it is not visible in your area (check with your local mosque), than wait till tomorrow night.

Re: Ramadhan in USA

Sunday is the first day of Ramadan as per moon sighting goes. I am located in Montreal. InshAllah-
