Here’s what it says:
“Looking at the visibilty curve one can understand that the moon is impossible to be seen in any continent, although it is possible to be seen near the International Dateline southwest of Hawaii by telescope on September 22. On the same day at west coast of North America, the moon will be about 14 hours old, and about 1 degree above the horizon at sunset time, and will not be visible in North America.”
Based on the new approach of determining the beginning of the Islamic lunar month adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America 1st day of Ramadan will be September 23, 2006.
^^ Well, like Kaleem said, and it's my opnion as well that you should follow your local mosque's decision and not worry about what someone hundreds of miles away is saying.
According to the calculation criteria for determining the Islamic Lunar dates adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America, following are the dates for Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1427.
**Ramadan 1427 - First day of Fasting September 23, 2006
Eidul Fitr 1427 - First day of Shawwal October 23, 2006**
According to U.S. Naval Observatory and moonsighting.com, a new moon is born at 11:45 EST on 22nd September and since it is less than 14 hours old, it is under the horizon and can’t be seen atleast by 23rd… so either 24th or 25th will be the first day of the lunar month
Just got done with my sehri. Even though I believe the moonsighting explanation I am fasting today cos pretty much all the mosques in my area have announced sept 23rd to be the first day of Ramadhan. If its extra hopefully Allah will adjust it to a nafli roza :D
Got a call from my mom during sehri time (when I was sleeping) to wish me Happy RamadaN… and I was like u guys started today Im doing it tomorrow:hula:
Lol my bhai called the local masjid to find out if the moon had been sighted and the guy goes, "aap pagal hogaye hain kia? today is the 28th of shaba'an". Bhai was kind of put off by the way we were told that but masjids in our area have not declared saturday as the 1st of ramadhan.
On the other hand, my abbu ji had a dream about the holy month starting on monday :D Wow, we can have three chances of eids now.
crescent u really need to stop with that....stop making an issue out of it! stop making ppl feel bad for fasting on saturday (on every Ramadan thread)....cuz you will get gunna for that not the ppl fasting. Allah knows OUR intentions are good and HE knows our majboori and Allah is All Forgiving and Merciful. However he is not for those people that make a mockery out of people that are trying to do something righteous and good (ie fasting) be it the right day or the wrong day.
Also, what’s up with ICNA? On their website, they say that the announcement about the new moon will be made on Saturday night. What annoucement? Is Monday a possibility for them? What calendar are they following?
lol yea…ICNA says it could be either sunday or monday i believe. how can the same moon that has been sighted in the east be sighted 2 entire days later in the west is beyond me!
