Ramadan - The month of beggars

What is with the beggars? They are everywhere. On gates of mosques, on traffic signals, in markets everywhere. Seems number of beggars increase manifold with the start of Ramadan.

Today in our Masjid, a man started asking for financial help between the Taraveeh and Witr. Pesh-Imam got angry and said ‘Masjid khuda se mangne ki jagah hai, bandon se nahin.. yahan per mangne walon ko sharm aani chahiye’.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

in our region at the end of month you can see group of women travelling with bundles of sarees they received during ramdan....

Now a days men are also coming to receive Fitra...........:D

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

they are as good as the politicians...won't let slide any chance by which they could make easy bucks. these are professional faqeers controlled by mafias so it's our religious obligation not to give them a penny...i hate to see them around.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

even in dubai, same is the case :(

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

in karachi, many seasonal beggars come from all over pakistan, and they annoy people when they are doing transaction at any place.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

Right. Last Friday, I was buying some fruit at Empress market. ek to wahan parking ka jhanjat and then as soon as I step out of car, there was an army of beggars. One ReRhi wala and beggar woman started arguing on the point that who will first do the job. Beggar to get money or the ReRhi wala to sell fruit. That woman started calling names to the ReRhi wala in Sindhi that added my vocabulary :p

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

 Dubai main bhi? Are they local Arabs or some NRIs, Bengalis or Pakistanis?

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

I think you are right. The needy people can't get courage to ask for help. These professional beggars go in all areas to collect their share.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

In Pakistan majority on the gates of Masjids are women and children. Men normally beg on traffic signals and in markets. But again there is no hard and fast rule. They are everywhere.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

mostly pakistani n bangalis

just before starting ramadan i had bell on my door, an arab lady with a small girl was standing, she gave me paper there it was written i dont know english i need money for my treatment n her medical reports were also attached with it, i dont know it was real or fake i gave her money :frowning:

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

When you gave it, then don’t waste ajr by doubting. Some people also got skills to get money from you. Last year, when I was returning from Taraveh, I man came and started giving wasta of Allah Rasool and ask for help to buy some Tasbeeh, Topi, itr for selling at some Masjid door. I asked him that I didn’t have money in my pocket, but he kept on saying that I can’t beg from others (everyone) and for God and His Prophet’s help me. I had to use my ATM card, but when I gave him some money he demanded for more.

Afterwards, I also started doubting him and :smack: on my foolishness to take him to ATM, considering the city’s condition.

Point is we should be aware and think before giving money to anyone. Thats why this year, I already planned and send my Zakat to Ammi’s account to distribute that.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

i m not doubting just telling the scenarios

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

two days ago, i went to this Indian Restaurant on Gerrard Street, the India Bazaar, to buy some food for take-out...a well dressed lady walked up to me and asked for help saying, "she doesn't have a job and that she doesn't have money to buy things in Ramadhan." ... i felt pity for this woman and i gave her a good amount. the restaurant owner was talking about this lady. i was shocked to learn that she is a professional beggar and that she is there all the time asking for help, often persistently asking! it's against the law here to intimidate or harass people for money. i dunno how she manages to continue intimidating people. i guess no one calls the police. she was kicked out from the restaurant a few minutes earlier.

in hii logoN kii vajah se genuine Ghareeb logoN kii madad nahiiN ho paatii...un GhareeboN ko bhii log jaalii samajh kar inkaar kar dete haiN...aaTe ke saath ghun bhii piss jaataa hai, SAD! :(

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

true gehoon ke sath ghun bhi piss jata hai :(

People then start giving zakat etc to people they know and avoid helping anyother needy person due to such incidents

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

I really can't recall the last time I went out and wasn't harassed by these beggars. It's now difficult to even step out of the car, or even wait in your car for a while. And these professional beggars are no longer satisfied with just the Rs. 5-10 we would give them. Now they want 100's of rupees, they want complete money for medical treatments, university fees, eid clothes, and our food as well (They ask for Pizza and McDonalds, and fries and rolls!)

It's shameful to even ask your own relatives for money at a time of need, I wonder how these ppl are so shameless?

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

Tough and complex situation.

One end, it is the month when they can get more from people so can't blame them for trying.

Hard to differentiate between real needy or fake ones for people who want to give.

There is a need for more organizational work and Govt. control. But what can govt. do if people are there who give money to beggars.

Even rich countries have this problem in different ways besides stop sign/red-light beggars.

Some people ring the bell and ask money for 'college education' or trip for 'humanitarian reason' with old plastic wrapped letters.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

They started asking for Pizza and McDonalds? Had ho gai.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

Exactly the major problem is that you can’t differentiate between the real and fake one.

As far as the Government role is concerned, I’m sorry to say that encourage begging with introduction of programs like Benazir support Fund and all that. During flood days, Government itself behaved like beggar for ad and now they are using that ad for getting vote bank. In many districts of rural Sindh, they asked people to come up with CNIC to get cheque of Rs 10,000 and I observe many well-to-do people washing their hands in this behti ganga :bummer:

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

So you say there was no need for background check for those who collected the money?

I think these kind of programs should not stop but need to be well organized.

Law can be used against beggars then it would be seen as Govt. being harsh on already poor people.

Certainly regular street beggars or daily beggars do need to be removed and be provided alternatives.

Re: Ramadan - The month of beggars

It was an attempt by PPP to make happy people of those constituencies which are their stronghold and jahan ke liye kaha jata hai ke wahan se PPP agar kutta bhi khaRa karde to wo jeeta ga :bummer:

No checking, just behti ganga main hath dho’o
