because the arabic word "Zuad" does not have teh same pronounciation as "zay". there are reasons to have seperate "zaal" "zay" and "zuad" in arabic alphabet.
so is is a z sound or a d sound..niether, somewhere in the middle. since there there is not compareable word in english "d" is used, but many people use 'z" as well.

"Ramzaan" is a valid Urdu word. Why don't you use Ramzaan instead of Ramadan?

Dont try to play around with words Z and D sound tottaly different in the the english language ....Tomorrow u will be saying that there is no P in the arabic language os we can substitute it for an "B" ...so next time order a Bizza in Pizza Hut. :)

the point being if niether of those sound like the actual word because of the limitation of the english alphabet, use whichever one you want.

ever read the spelling of pepsi in arabic? that is exactly what they do because they dont have the corresponding character in their alphabet.

dear community college graduate, the logical connection your feeble mind fails to make is that "fay" and "f" have the same pronounciation and thus one does not have to substitute the "fay" with something else.
now..the word "chutney" in your nick can be pronounced several ways too :D

No Fraudia, that's not the point at all. The point is that people somehow have this tendency of giving preference to Arabic words for some words that are common Urdu word like Ramazaan, Wazoo (Wadu, as they say in Arabic, right?). So if I'm speaking English and then want to use the word, why won't I use the Urdu word instead of Arabic? What's this fascination with the Arabic word?

But u know I am from NWFP......Pathan ......so I pronounce "f" as an "P".......I Think if it is OK for english language to change Z to a D then its ok in Pushto to change an F to a P. :)

I worry about everything that tries to instill the so called "Saudi Arabian" culture into our language and traditions. I never used the word Ramadan in my life when I was in Pakistan. I never even knew it existed. And then I heard it over here from people just like me, using Ramadan instead of Ramazaan. Heck I myself used it couple of times before I was convinced otherwise.
Do I think it's some sort of "cultural assimiliation" of "Ummah" that they are trying to promote under one umberella of Islamic "lingo" here? I don't think so and I don't give a damn. But this whole Desi people's following particularities dictated by the so called Arabic culture is stupidity of great proportion.

But in pashto there is a "fay" so no matter how you pronounce it, when you write it, e.g. farzana. yusufzai, afridi, aorakzai you will use the appropriate character and not "P"
You may have a slioght speech problem becuase my pashto speaking pals can pronounce "fay" quite properly. Otherwise yusufzai would be yusupzai and afridi would be apridi.

beagain you are incorrect there is no changing from a "z" to a "d" the word "zuad" is nither Z nor D.
Hows this, its an arabic word so we let arabs figure out how they write it in english, and since both arabic and english are older than urdu, lets not mess about there :D I believe Ramadaan was written as Ramadaan in english since before urdu even existed as a language.
Now if Pakistanis pronounce the word incorrectly than thats their problem why do we have "zay" "zaal" and "zuad" in urdu alphabet? because they have different pronounciations, too bad most ppl cant differentiate.
