'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

‘Racist’ school bus drivers ‘refusing to stop for young Muslim girls who are wearing the hijab’

School bus drivers have been accused of racism after failing to stop for pupils wearing Muslim hijabs. Young girls have claimed they are being bullied on board for dressing in the traditional veil which covers the head. To avoid trouble, ‘cowardly’ drivers are allegedly ignoring pupils who wait at bus stops wearing the headscarf.

Following a police investigation, officers will now be drafted on to board the buses to protect the students from ‘racist’ taunts of other passengers.

The problems centre on Merseytravel and pupils attending West Derby’s Holly Lodge Girls’ College in Merseyside, where 10 per cent of the 11,274 11 to 18-year-old students are from ethnic minorities.

Members of the Muslim community said the issue was a long-running one. Amina Ismail, who works at Liverpool John Moores University, was approached by the victims. She said: ‘They said people driving past were being abusive because they were wearing the hijab.’

Ms Ismail said bus drivers refusing to stop were ‘cowardly’ and that ‘they should not push their own personal prejudices on young people’. She urged people to ‘see past the scarf or skin colour and look beyond this’. Holly Lodge has previously won praise from Ofsted for its ‘promotion of equality and diversity’.

Headteacher Julia Tinsley said: ‘There have been a small number of cases where ignorant people have directed racist comments at our pupils while they are on buses. ‘It is completely unacceptable and very upsetting for those involved and we have provided support to those affected. ‘We welcome the assistance from Merseyside police in tackling the mindless minority who think it is acceptable to make racist comments.’

Merseyside police has produced an action plan to prevent any further incidents, including looking at how victims can pass on anonymous information. A spokesman said the force was committed to tackling racism, adding: ‘We will be putting police community support officers on public buses during the periods these incidents are happening to reassure passengers and deter would-be offenders.

‘CCTV will be routinely checked following allegations of any criminal offence.’ However, Colin Carr, regional adviser for Unite - whose members include bus drivers - said he would be surprised if they were failing to stop. ‘The union would condemn this kind of action, and equality and diversity is something we promote across the spectrum,’ he said. Merseytravel said it condemned ‘all acts of racism’ and, after probing the claims, has ‘now drawn up an action plan to deal with and prevent any further incidents’.

Nice to know the police are taking it seriously but the comments on the Daily Mail page are a bit disappointing.. I know the BNP and other far-right groups have a lot of members posting there tho. The very first comment listed:

‘The drivers are called racist, sounds like they are using common sense and avoiding confrontation which could lead a an accident’

I wonder if he’d be saying that if it was his grandmother or some other family member being subjected to this abuse..

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

The girls should just adapt to UK culture and stop wearing hijabs. They won't become "less" muslims.

Completely diagree, today u say take ure hijabs off to fit in,
2morrow it will b leave ure faith to fit in

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

The article is clear that the bus drivers are not racist, but simply affraid of the trouble that some kids might cause. I think the underlying problem is the growth of holiganism among the young in the UK. There have been other cases of bullying as well. Lets not give this an Islamic flavour. I am pretty sure Happy, eyes, icon and co will start there rant against all things British.

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

a poster called M.Hussein has made sensible comment in the source link. Hijab does not cover their face so it is not a security thing and clearly it is to avoid the bullies starting the fight.

It is to Britain's credit that they have sensibly added protection in the buses (or said they will) as well as looking for ways to anonymously report on such incidents.

I hope the little girls do not have to endure hatred and can enjoy their childhood

And converting to christianity won't either, right...what an idiotic assertion...

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

school kids should not be allowed to display any symbols religious or otherwise.

They need to wear the school uniform and 80% problems of hooliganism will go away.

Once a student reaches college, there is no longer a need for the uniform, and thus they should be free to wear their religious symbols etc.

I am a die hard secular but I disagree with that.

Its like asking a Jew to stop wearing his skull cap, or Christians to stop wearing a christian cross..

Jo naiki ka kaam karte haiN na, unko sahi rastay pe chalte rehne do.

If you are a muslim, then its sad that you are saying this.

Well why do you want to force them to do something they dont want to
If they want to wear hijab what is bothering you
you can't sleep at night? you have nightmares?
Only overintegrated foreigner think like you do.
i bet even most brits do not think about banning headscarfs

Hellooooo ----- does any one remember human rights ----- civil rights ----- freedom of expressions ----- and above all ----- right to practice one's religion without being persecuted every day of their lives?????.

What a flip on your part ----- until a few days ago you were a "die hard" pro Hijab ban in France ----- why such a shift of attitude all of a sudden ?????.

Just out of curiosity what kind of secularism do you follow ----- pseudo secularism? ----- the secularism that pursues substantially different policies toward religion? ----- the secularism that forces ----- Pledge of Allegiance or so called ----- Age of Enlightenment ----- on children in schools yet completely defies and negates right of Muslim women to wear Hijab?????.

When did he say that people should convert. All he said, may be rather naively, is that these girls should try to fit in.

Now as I expected the Mullah-parast, have turned this into an Islam in danger thread. The law in the UK allows girls to wear the niqab and hijab. In this case, they are now providing security.

What we have in the UK in the exponential growth in bullying. Its not just these hijabi girls who are victims, but others groups like the disabled as well.

This thread is not about the merits of the hijab, but the problem with bullying.

And guess what guys, Pakistan has a much greater problem with bullying then the UK. Dilpakistani, why not say sorry for your country's problem with bullying, then attacking my country.

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

Khan why must you compare the UK to Pakistan? Is your iman so weak that you can't even condemn this pathetic act?

Racism is racism. I guess you would be up and protesting if Muslims did this to haseedic jews.

Re: ‘Racist’ UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

Simple, because Khan15 aka mostar95 will refer to anyone not pertaining to quaid-e-fisaad altaf bhai aka pir of karachi/london as a ‘salafi mollah’… :hehe:

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

we can argue this endlessly.but just remember:

1) the criminals are the ones that harassed the girls - not the driver, not the Brit police
2) uniforms make sense when there are so many different religious symbols - otherwise somebody will invent another religion and say their God demands they carry nitric acid in their turban to remind them of the big bang

You know, it is great all of you are thinking about great religious concepts and secularism and consistency etc. Don't forget to see it from the point of view of these children involved.

Now for some controversial thought

It is my opinion that a large proportion if not a majority of these girls in west wear their religious symbols only because they will get into trouble at home. At school they cluster together amongst themselves because that is the only way to avoid being 'different'. This leads to non-integration for life. Middle and High school years can be traumatic years given the amount of changes they're going through and you guys should not add to it.

Uniforms make more sense than ever before

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

So now they're after the headscarf?

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

^ They are building it up gradually,
Burqa ban, minaret ban, then they will say scarf ban, uske badh Muslim ban

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

I don't care much.....if they ban headscarf I'm gonna move somewhere else but for most people moving from place to place is not easy and possible.

Re: 'Racist' UK bus drivers refuse to stop for hijabi schoolgirls

All I can say is what man has made of man. How sad all this is.
