Do you feel a sense of different treatment at work and in social groups because of your faith or your race as Pakistani?
Do you openly admit to people you are Pakistani or you pretend to be an Indian?

Not really, I have run into racist jackasses but it’s rare.
I don’t claim to be Pakistani or Indian. If people ask about my background I tell them. No reason to hide or lie about it.
Re: Racism
Maybe but don’t care.
No reason why I would pretend to be Indian.
Come to think of it, never been called an Indian all my life.
Re: Racism
I don’t understand why any Pakistani would pretend to be Indian. I don’t see any advantages. Better to say one is Arab, Sri Lankan, Spanish, Nepali Turkish or whatever else if one has a desire to pass for some other nationality.
Interested to hear if others have had experience of racism. It’s interesting how racism works these days.
Re: Racism
Congratulations. You must feel proud not to have such a mistake made of your origins. ![]()
Re: Racism
Nobody willingly pretends to be an indian on this forum. Everyone knows tht now.
irani, turkish, gori would have been better choices.
Re: Racism
I’d go for Turkish then gori. Irani would be underestimating yourself. It doesn’t happen willingly on the forum..it’s a label forced on people. Don’t let it happen to you Sweetmoi. Avoid it all costs.
Re: Racism
Do u talk this much irl?
if so, as Ethan would say: oh boy!
Re: Racism
Gandhari would have proudly said “I am Pakistani”
Re: Racism
The religion thing perhaps..
I don’t volunteer up my ethnicity or religion but wouldn’t hide it if directly asked.. Weird as it might sound I’m more cautious around Pakistanis/desis.. don’t fancy my personal life being attacked on a daily basis..
Re: Racism
Maybe not as much but i guess i am slightly outspoken.
Kam bolne ki koshish kar rahi hoon aaj kal.
Re: Racism
I do get treated differently because of religion but not in a bad way. I am of Indian descent so sometimes when people ask me if I’m Pakistani, I’ll tell them that I’m actually of Indian origin.
Re: Racism
True he would have. I too would have said the same if I was Pakistani. All countries have their pros and cons. You just look at the pros. There is lot of rich history in Pakistan if one is aware of it.

Re: Racism
Hmm..really. Can people tell religion from a distance if it is not obvious? Or do you mean if someone knows from name. If Pakistanis have negative image Indians are stereotyped as rapists as well these days. I wonder if these stereotypes affect females as much as males.
Sad that as desis we have this gossiping reputation that people would be wary of disclosing things to another desi.
Re: Racism
No, I’ve not experienced racism. I’ve had people ask random things but these were general questions since most don’t know much about Afghanistan.
I don’t know if it’s just where I live but people don’t really bring up race. If asked what my background is, I tell people. Otherwise, I don’t bring it up.
Re: Racism
If it’s just someone you won’t see again..i don’t feel effort is worth correcting. But if it is someone you will see again then better to correct so they don’t think you are hiding something.
Twice ive been thought of as Pakistani by Pakistanis. I’m totally cool with it. I was asked whether I am Indian or Pakistani. It was at a shopping centre or some casual place where chances of being seen again were slim. I felt very tempted to be Pakistani and with my GS knowledge pass as being from whatever city they are from. For those 10 minutes i see them what does it matter. But then i feel deceptive so i can’t go through with it. Next question is asked what religion are you? Why is it a question asked if someone is Indian? Does it matter if someone is a casual acquiaintance?
Re: Racism
^The image to do with religion was what I meant..
The “rapist” thing isn’t really talked about over here.. obviously there’s been quite a bit of stuff in the media but it doesn’t seem to have affected people’s day-to-day lives as there isn’t a common association between Indians and rapists.. not yet anyway..
Re: Racism
What would mixed race peopel say? ![]()
Re: Racism
I hope it never does. Do you think there is a common association that people make between religion and other images? I’d think most educated people will be able to differentiate between actions of individual and a group. All religious groups have outliers who do wrong. It shouldn’t reflect the image of all in that group. Most Indians are seen as automatically being Hindu and being part of crazy rituals. You’d think people in West would have more knowledge and understanding of fellow people of the book.
