Re: Racism
In my case I’m clearly Muslim, so I guess a lot of it stems from people having the idea that there are no Muslims in India. I’ve mistaken for other ethnicities/races as well, so I’d just tell them what I am. I just tell them because they ask.
Re: Racism
It’s interesting they think that since the 3rd largest country for Muslims is India after Indonesia and Pakistan. I guess it’s good to tell if asked. Since i obviously look desi i just don’t understand the need to ask a casual stranger who you get along with if they are Indian or Pakistani. If person feels they get along with me and see me as someone of their own then no need to ask and clarify. If i want to tell you i will tell you. Just my thought process.
Re: Racism
My impression is that most of the time they ask the question as an ice breaker. A lot of times after that, the conversation can take other directions like talk about food (Indian food obviously), IIT or other stuff.
Re: Racism
I have a habit of chatting with random people if I’m stuck in traffic/waiting for the bus and they seem foreign/nonangraiz, its the easiest thing to talk about. Everyone seems a bit curious about Pakistan, so it works for me to bring up my race and ask them theirs. I have picked up some farsi on few occasions, iranians are always up for it, very friendly people.
Re: Racism
^ I bet people are really enlightened about the horrors of Pakistan as a result.
Re: Racism
Surprisingly no. I study IR so I know jack or two about how to avert such ‘queries’ ..
Re: Racism
Yeah..we beat that horse to death. Twice over.
Re: Racism
Or Afghani.
Re: Racism
i have never been discriminated…may be because i do not look like a typical Indian guy.
if asked, i do tell that i am an India. no need to pretend to be a Turkish or an A-Rab. i am proud to be who i am.
Re: Racism
I would say that horse has been flogged to death, buried, and had a mausoleum built over it by now. ![]()

Re: Racism
Just wonder how much asking about racism is different from asking would you date a black guy/girl??!! :hmmm:
Psst… http://www.paklinks.com/gs/relationships/644508-would-you-date-a-black-person.html
Re: Racism
I get heaps of warm jovial compliments when I mention my Pakistani ethnicity.

Re: Racism
By ‘typical Indian guy’ you mean dark-skinned ?
Re: Racism
yeah…darker, shorter and accent….
Re: Racism
I used to be scared/wary/concerned about the racism and discrimination at work when I was new.
Because my job also has to deal with members of the public mostly, and that has few times, resulted in slurs or racist sentences hurled at me, when they(public) were refused something.
Due to the charter of rights and freedoms (any Canadians on the forum know this, or google) we are protected in any such cases. Employer can’t expect us to tolerate or take any type of physical/verbal abuse.
On the issue of origin and religion, it’s the same principle. However, despite few reactions or racism by public, most of the people at my work location are actually more aware of the religion and geo-political nonsense surrounding Pakistan. They all blame the USA for the problems and issues in the world. Never had any issue with the religion. Even if it occurs, I know and believe that Allah himself will take care of it for me, i don’t have to worry about that.
I really wish Pakistan had a more positive image in the world, before all this extremism and barbarianism which is always in the news it was not so bad. But these days there is never anything positive that comes in the mainstream media. The common people’s perceptions of Pakistan are mostly all based on the news/propaganda these days. And you can’t really satisfy anyone cuz they always bring an argument or something that makes you speechless. Due to all this negativity and bad image, It stirrs feelings of hatred and negativity even for the country of birth/origin in many. It is not easy to own Pakistan these days, when you live abroad, specially in the western/developed world. I wish there was positive too.
On another note, the mere mention of Pakistan is enough to finish your conversation(or whatever it was) with a stranger, specially when they’re white and ignorant. If that person is really knowledgeable or knows about Pakistan by other ways it can lead to interesting and friendly conversations.
