Racism within Pakistanis

This question is prompted by a few recent threads/posts on the matter.

Until I joined GS, I was never aware that there never really noticed there were differences between Pakistanis. I guess growing up in a small community, to me all Pakistanis were the same. And ideally, isn’t that how we Pakistanis abroad should feel? United, tied to a common homeland?

It’s one thing to face racism with goras or Indians or Arabs etc, but my question is specifically about racism within the Pakistani community.

So this prompts me to ask: have you ever felt discriminated or slighted because you are not Punjabi/Pathan/Urdu-speaking/etc etc? I’m not talking only about marriage or rishta purposes, but in all matters of one’s life.

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

i have...i'm a canadian of indian descent. once i went to Pakistan and arrived in Karachi on a PIA flight from Toronto. Since my final destination was Delhi, i was supposed to be put in a Hotel for my connecting flight to Delhi the next day. before i left Toronto i had checked with PIA and Pakistani Consulate in Toronto and they all said that i didn't need a visa. this immigration officer gave me all the hassle and refused to let me in. in the meantime, my uncle had come to pick me up who is a high ranking public servant [IG Police]. when he learnt about the situation he walked into the area i was sitting and waiting and it was funny to see that the same people who refused me entry were wagging their tail behind him...offcourse, i was allowed to go into the city with honor...thanks to my uncle haha

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

Like in every society racism or discrimination because of your color, cast or social status is a decease.
But since you are specificly talking about Pakistan then i must admit its the biggest problem (worse then economic problem) Pakistan is facing. Until this menace is not tackled Pakistan will never progress.

I personally did not experience anything but i know people who are discriminated in Pakistan because of their color, religion, cast or social status and this should be stopped.

As human beings we all discriminate or have prejudists. Even in Europe, a country like Belgium the vlaamsch people discriminate against wallonians whilst both are Belg.

And lets be honest it has all got to do with education. A country where there is 75 % illiteracy rate what good can you expect? If in an educated and progress country like Europe people can be ignorant and discriminate and cannot differentiate what is right or what is wrong then Pakistan is almost a lost case.

Our leaders rather buy 45 million dollar fighter plane then rather spend the money on education. They rather forgive loan defaulters then spend money on education.

Unless the people of Pakistan are not educated this evil called racism will not easily be erradicated.

The saddest i feel is when people talk about islam, non stop they talk about islam but they still discriminate that makes me sad. Of course that is hypocritical we all know that but it does give wrong impression to the outsiders and gives them a chance to mock us and our religion.

We are not good guardians of our religion unfortunatly. If we were to follow the true spirit of the religion then there would be no discrimination at all.

Its not nice what has happend with you but unfortunatly this also happens the other way around. Its next to impossible to get visa for India if you have a Pakistan paspoort or ur origin is Pakistani. I think this will continue unless we trust each other and stop fighting with each other, i hope it happens very soon.

Yes I have, i was only in the seventh grade when I went to Pakistan with my family. Most of my family in America speaks Punjabi so when we went to Pakistan I was shocked that everyone spoke urdu…me like any dumb kid tried to fit in and speak Urdu and got ridiculed by my own family members …every since then i have never tried to speak urdu and honestly whenever people speak Urdu i am really hesitant to reply expecting them to laugh or correct me and its sad cause everyone speaks urdu not punjabi (other than english) here too i never noticed it until i came back from pakistan :frusty:

Sara I think its a computer/real life thing...its always easier for people to say horrid things from behind a computer screen that they would NEVER say to ur face

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

Well its so ignorant and silly that people discriminate those who do not speak urdu well.
Again its inferiority complex.

Those who speak perfect urdu when they go to english speaking country and they speak English with an accent then they are considered also PAINDOOS :)

How can a language be inferior to another language its so pathetic really but in Pakistan unfortunatly those who do not have confidence and they are shy of speaking Punjabi or other languages instead of URDU.

Urdu is a beautiful language and its our national language but its sad that even on our national tv those who speak other then URDU are ridiculed.

We should sherish our difference languages and dialects and celebrate the differences but in a country where there is no education and so much poverty it will take decades and a brave leader to fight the problems Pakistan is facing, insha Allah it will happen but just dont know when.

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

In my own personal opinion , we Pakistaniz are wayyyyyy racist then any other community out there . First we are racist in our own communities , rich to poor , then 'bradarism' , then comes different provinces , languages , ethnicity , countries . I saw it happening in front of my own eyes and they consider it their right to do it and on the top of it they are so proud of it .

Which racism in that. People who have elastic in their pajamas dont like the one who have kamarband in theirs? :konfused:

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

i like ur conclusion and i think there has to be a better understanding and mjutual co-operation, its just matter of time when both parties will realize that.

bro, it wasn't an immigration issue. i was within the regulations to be allowed in coz i was just transitting thru Karachi. they denied and gave me hard time and i could tell from their dirty looks that they didn't like me because i was of Indian descent. it was so obvious!** :( its SAD though that they treat indian muslims as their enemy ... we are NOT!

Yea people using KamarBand are racist against people using elastic

:chai:

:rotfl:

Do din baat kerna chordoon tho angrezi bhi bhool jathay ho :hehe:

I was told once that urdu speaking people can't be trusted because they backstab you. People discriminate against others based on experiences they've had, and some go to the extent of generalizing all urdu speaking people as such and such. And I guess it never really changes until you meet someone who totally breaks that stereotype for you.

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

Oh and another thing is memons usually like to seclude themselves from all other people, so they'll hold Eid dinners and charge memons $10 but non-memons would have to pay $20 to attend. I actually asked one of my memon friends why is that so, and she told me memons usually like to have parties amongst memons, and that they chip in money to their society or something like that, so it's only fair to make it cheaper for them. I didn't say anything afterwards, but yea I felt discriminated against, and memons still do that.

Re: Racism within Pakistanis

how do they know if someone is memon or not?

**
lol...i think its because they are considered the biggest scrouges in the world [more than a jew lol] so if they ask for $20, no one will show up for the dinner lol

they are recognized by their unique accent and scrouge mentality lol**

A couple of yrs ago I was going to play cricket in GTA area.Just asked a guy"Are you from Lahore too" he answerd "R u mad?".I was obviously pissed and shocked. Was going to give him a befitting reply but good sense prevailed other wise would not have been an ugly scene!

ohh you know if someone is memon, and amongst memons there are soooo many different types, theirs bantva (batawala) memons, jethpur memons, and so many more. They all speak different dialects and bantva girls don't marry other guys besides bantva, but bantva guys can marry other memon types of girls because the kids will become bantva and take after their dad lollll OMG when I hear memons tell me this stuff, I'm like whyyy what is wrong with you guys. They act all religious and then they segregate amongst their own selves. Most memons are rich, and sadly the ones here are pretty snobbish about it. I went once to a memon dawat, and all the girls were sitting at the table talking about brand named stuff they bought, and I felt so out of place because I could careless about brand name purses, shoes, etc. The whole night they discussed money and how they spent it, and gossiped about other memon girls who didn't show up at the party. Not all are stingy lol However the few memons I know, they actually are :-/
