Racial discrimination...

All the while, I’ve known there is minor racial discrimination, but I never thought I’d hear so many stories about how desis and many others get discriminated based on their race at places such as the gas stations, malls, work and the like.

Recently I came across a couple of news articles and then I heard a whole bunch of incidents where people felt they have been discriminated against. I must say it has disturbed me a lot and has made me feel uneasy.

Here are the news articles:

Have you been a victim of racial (or any other form) discrimination? If so, how did you deal with it?

Re: Racial discrimination...

It’s quite common over here, sometimes it’s been really frank but most of the times it’s subtle and disguised.

At times it makes me feel ashamed of living in this country.

A lot of Pakis have an habit of arse licking and goroN ki haaN meiN haaN milaana so they get on okay by putting down their own culture in favour of gora culture but I can’t live like that, buttering ki meri aadat naheiN hai, I suppose that’s what pisses a lot of them off, some respect differences of opinion but a lot don’t.

I think you’ll find in real life racism is very common and PC is very short lived and only limited to the professional world but a lot of Pakis don’t interact with goray on a social level so they think of them as angels.

Re: Racial discrimination...

^ Isn't the situation against pakis in the UK similar to the treatment of blacks in the US, in that they're treated like siht? There was open discrimination against blacks ("separate but equal" ring a bell?) and it exists to this day, although its' a bit more subtle now? That's what I've heard...

To be honest, I can't say that I have been discriminated against based on my ethnic/religious background. Then again, I don't look like a typical desi--I often get mistaken for Hispanic/Latina. But even when I wore hijab, I never got any remarks or dirty (not lustful dirty but "you terrorist!" dirty) looks....

Re: Racial discrimination…

In terms of racial profiling at the airports in the US (not Canada), desis, especially Pakistani Muslims have suffered the most from the 9/11 fall out. I know a few people who left their jobs because they couldn’t travel and their jobs required business travel.

Re: Racial discrimination...

Ah.. now Pakstanis learn what discrimination is. No one ever gave a $h!t back "home", did they? It was OK back home to treat those Bengalis like 3rd class citizens, and those Christians were just "Chorays" who are only fit to clean their bathrooms.

Re: Racial discrimination…

don’t forget all the balochis and pathans afterall just a little while ago the army was sent in to kill those b@stards because other then the punjabis and to some extent the mohajirs everyone else doesn’t even deserve to live in pakistan right?

Re: Racial discrimination...

mohajirs got it BAD in the 90s.

Re: Racial discrimination…

That’s not racism, that’s slavery. If the US says wipe out Lahore or Karachi, we’ll even do that. With leaders like Musharraf in control, everything is expendable.

Re: Racial discrimination...

Ranjan, it's sad to see desis giving priority and more respect to the whites than to their fellow desis. Btw.. where do you reside?

Sara516, I feel Muslims now get discriminated a lot more than the Blacks in the US. No wonder so many desis got kicked out because of their illegal status in the US, while the US is still packed with illegal immigrants from numerous other countries and no action has been taken against them. Plus many others fled to Canada, as they became victims of racial profiling after whatever happened a few years ago.

LuxuryItem, I've heard quite a lot about that as well. Many were fired, while many others had no other choice, but to leave their jobs and residence because of the situation around them.

TeenDabbyWala, Bengladeshis and Christians residing in Pakistan with decent education have decent jobs. However, those with no or very little education are forced to take up low-level occupations.

Khatmal, in Sindh, Sindhis are everything, in Pujab, Punjabis are everything. Similarly, in Balochistan, Balochis get to rule the area and Pathans have a strong hold in their area. As soon as you step outside your territory you're treated badly in Pakistan.

skhan, I fully agree with you.

Re: Racial discrimination…

Why is that? That surprised me.

I’d draw a parallel about the Indian states (Kanada, Andhra, Kerala, Gujju, Punjabi…) but all getting along great in the metropolis like Mumbai, Bangalore etc.

Just like Pashtoo, Urdu, Sindhi, there is language difference and
just like islam there’s Hindu, Islam, Christianity and Sikh bonds
just like musharaf, NS, BB et al there are our own clowns

What’s the difference?

Re: Racial discrimination...

Unfortunately, that's how I feel it is in Pakistan.

Re: Racial discrimination...

One day during Ramadhan - one gori at my workplace says 'if they're not killing themselves by blowing up - they're starving themselves! seems like self harm and suicide is the norm for you people' and everyone else in the place laughed. I didn't want to be chucked outa my job as I'd only been there 3 days so kept quiet. Theres only 2 of us in there who are muslims and of pakistani origin. My colleague has nothing better to do than bring food in for these goras on EID DAY and then in front of me says he hates these goras. Talk about selling yourselfs to the goras.

Re: Racial discrimination...

Sadiyah sis I was born and grew up in Bolton (NorthWest UK), moved to Manchester.

Re: Racial discrimination...

nah alhamdulillah to be honest i lived 5 years in the USA (barring 4-5 months each yr almost that i was in pak for hols :D ) but i neva even ONCE experienced racial discrimination in the usa :)
the only time they ever singled me out was when i was travelling and they made me go thru special checking at the airport coz of my paki passport
warna no racism waghera..

Re: Racial discrimination…

hah Washington, DC has a lot of racists ppl here…A LOT…like my sister does hijaab, rite…and several times, people have come up to her and just bluntly said rude comments…and i know lots of ppl being discriminated for being muslim/brown…

summin is seriously rong with these DC ppl tho…they freakin crackheads…even the white businessmen walking around with their shiny shoes and suits and big black suitcases like they’re made of gold of summin :yukh:

:mad2:

..sigh and my dad said to not even say anything back to them if they ever discriminate…:(…he said it’s not worth the whole fight and all that…but sumtimes, i feel it is…:frowning:

Re: Racial discrimination…

p.s. living in DC is much worth it :dhimpak: dont get me rong…i love this place…been born and raised here… u gotta love it

Re: Racial discrimination…

next time dont stay quiet… speak up..

Re: Racial discrimination…

If somebody says something like that u should give them a piece of your mind rite away, cause if they get away with the Islamic jokes once or twice they will think its ok…
I seen with gorras if u immediately explain that such stuff is not acceptable, they wont say a word, at least not 2 ur face.

Re: Racial discrimination…

Yes. I get discriminated on GS for telling the truth by having my threads locked and posts deleted.

I deal with it with a big smile in the knowledge that GS probably reflects the reality of Pakistan

I actually can’t believe some guppies want members banned because of the colour of their skin or for being Indian:eek:
