guppies and guppans,
I wanted to ask this question to guppies from Canada/USA/UK/Europe/Australia. What racial category do you specify or check box against in surveys or being asked? I know in some countries, “East Indian” or “Asian Indian” is already a category(given their large #s in every western country), but I dont think Pakistanis check the box identifying themselves East Indians. I always am either Middle-easterner or Caucasian- depending on the situation and the survey. What are your responses? Serious replies only!

you’re too funny yaar.
good luck when you get marked as a potential terrorist/potential hick ![]()
Re: Racial category
Well in USA, Pakistan is listed as a Middle Eastern Country
And Middle Easterners are classified as White by the US Census bureau
So my Uncle who lives in USA classifies himself as White ![]()
Re: Racial category
What? That's surprising and disgusting. Pakistanis are NOT white or Caucasian. We are East Indian, or Asian. In some forms they specify what countries are included under 'Asian' and a lot of times Pakistan is included. In other cases, Pakistanis are EAST INDIAN or SOUTH ASIAN, if that is a category.
It's very disappointing how some Pakistanis try to associate themselves with 'middle eastern' or 'caucasian'.. just reflects on our inferiority complex.. maybe 5% of our population has closer genetic links with middle easterners (closer genetic links, not the same genes still).. the rest are still the same ethnic stock as most of our south asian neighbours.. Get over it boys.. We are neither caucasian or middle eastern.. check SOUTH ASIAN, or EAST INDIAN, or ASIAN... whatever choice is available
Re: Racial category
i just tick on the other category and list pakistani. if that option is not available, then anything with the word asian in it. it's a continuum thing =/
Re: Racial category
^^ Pakistani is not a 'race' its a nationality.. our race is EAST INDIAN... or SOUTH ASIAN... or simple ASIAN (again, it depends on wht options are available)
Re: Racial category
there was a thread about it we may want to refer to it again. may want to see all teh different issues there including the US supreme court ruling on this decades ago.
lets not our hangups with not trying to be called asian, or forcing ourselvesd to be called asian get in the way of facts as they pertain to USA.
for Uk we are asian :)
rest of the places dont matter anyways.
Re: Racial category
^^ I have always found it strange to be called Asian in UK
I mean the Chinese and other oriental people in UK, what are they called?
If we are both called Asian, how do the cops differentiate when they are describing a suspect?
Re: Racial category
I never click any of them & leave blank. For me even having any box asking ur background is first ground of discrimination.
Re: Racial category
^^ no it isn't
USA uses the data for valuable statistical information regarding different ethnic groups.
Re: Racial category
On Yahoo weather Pakistan is included both in the Aisa and Middle Eastern Regions.
Re: Racial category
In the UK, they always put us under South Asians - South Asian Pakistani.

Most Americans think that Pakistanis are Arabs..
When I was in the USA visiting my uncle and I speaking Urdu, this black guy came up to us and said are you guys speaking Arabic?
Re: Racial category
in the uk its normally asian but i av noticed that they sometimes have a separate category now where u can specify under asian whether u r pakistani, chinese or indian etc

I doubt the average person in USA even knows that there is a language called urdu.
Re: Racial category
Heres a link to the US census bureau’s definition of racial categories:
Re: Racial category
Pakistan is under Asia and not listed under middle east. I recently filled some USCIS forms out and Pakistan is under Southeast Asia.
Your info might be old.
Re: Racial category
hey mama Iknow last time you had raised the question on what to check, what did you end up deciding putting your kids down as?
Re: Racial category
I checked both "caucasion" and "other" and wrote "South Asian" next to "other" (there wasnt a "south asian" box on the form)
Its really unclear how to "classify" my boys, whether it goes paternally or maternally or percentage etc. So thats the closest we got to their real definition...
