Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

Peace be upon you all.

“There is no verse in Quran in which the term ‘Believers’, unless Ali
is at the top of them and the chief of them and the more virtuous one
among them. Surely Allah has admonished the companions of Muhammad
(PBUH) in Quran, but He did not refer to Ali except with honor.”

So in this thread i will try to paste as many verses as i could in the honour of Imam Ali (as). My fellow brothers and sisters are welcome to contribute. Tafseer references would be welcome too. Insha Allah i will try to contribute an ayat atleast everyday. Lets see if we could take this thread into 2010 and make Submission to Peace a very happy man

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

I will start with the first chapter of the Holy Quran, Al Fatiha:

[1:6] Show us the straight path,
[1:7] The path of those whom Thou hast favoured; Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

Hazrat Ali(RA) is not mentioned in any verse by name. It is very easy to say 300 verses in Quran to praise Hazrat Ali(RA). Any verse in Quran which mentions qualities of Momins or Muslims can be construed to be in Praise of Hazrat Ali(RA) or Hazrat Abubbakar(RA) or Hazrat Oman(RA) or Hazrat Usman(RA) or any other sahabi of the time.

As for the meaning of As-Sirat Al-Mustaqim, Imam Abu Jafar At-Tabari said, "The Ummah agreed that Sirat Al-Mustaqim, is the clear path without branches, according to the language of the Arabs. For instance, Jarir bin Atiyah Al-Khatafi said in a poem, `The Leader of the faithful is on a path that will remain straight even though the other paths are crooked.‘’ At-Tabari also stated that, "There are many evidences to this fact.‘’ At-Tabari then proceeded, "The Arabs use the term, Sirat in reference to every deed and statement whether righteous or wicked. Hence the Arabs would describe the honest person as being straight and the wicked person as being crooked. The straight path mentioned in the Qur’an refers to Islam.

Imam Ahmad recorded in his Musnad that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said that the Prophet said,

(Allah has set an example: a Sirat (straight path) that is surrounded by two walls on both sides, with several open doors within the walls covered with curtains. There is a caller on the gate of the Sirat who heralds, ‘O people! Stay on the path and do not deviate from it.’ Meanwhile, a caller from above the path is also warning any person who wants to open any of these doors, ‘Woe unto you! Do not open it, for if you open it you will pass through.’ The straight path is Islam, the two walls are Allah’s set limits, while the doors resemble what Allah has prohibited. The caller on the gate of the Sirat is the Book of Allah, while the caller above the Sirat is Allah’s admonishment in the heart of every Muslim.)
If someone asks, "Why does the believer ask Allah for guidance during every prayer and at other times, while he is already properly guided Has he not already acquired guidance’’

The answer to these questions is that if it were not a fact that the believer needs to keep asking for guidance day and night, Allah would not have directed him to invoke Him to acquire the guidance. The servant needs Allah the Exalted every hour of his life to help him remain firm on the path of guidance and to make him even more firm and persistent on it. The servant does not have the power to benefit or harm himself, except by Allah’s permission. Therefore, Allah directed the servant to invoke Him constantly, so that He provides him with His aid and with firmness and success. Indeed, the happy person is he whom Allah guides to ask of Him. This is especially the case if a person urgently needs Allah’s help day or night. Allah said,

(O you who believe! Believe in Allah, and His Messenger (Muhammad ), and the Book (the Qur’an) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him)) (4:16).

Therefore, in this Ayah Allah commanded the believers to believe, and this command is not redundant since what is sought here is firmness and continuity of performing the deeds that help one remain on the path of faith. Also, Allah commanded His believing servants to proclaim,

(Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower.) (3:8). Hence,

(Guide us to the straight way) means, "Make us firm on the path of guidance and do not allow us to deviate from it.‘’

(7. The way of those upon whom You have bestowed Your grace, not (that) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray).

We mentioned the Hadith in which the servant proclaims,

(Guide us to the straight way) and Allah says, "This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asks for.‘’ Allah’s statement.

(The way of those upon whom You have bestowed Your grace) defines the path. `Those upon whom Allah has bestowed His grace’ are those mentioned in Surat An-Nisa’ (chapter 4), when Allah said,

(And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad ), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His grace, the Prophets, the Siddiqin (the truly faithful), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are! Such is the bounty from Allah, and Allah is sufficient to know) (4:69-70).

Allah’s statement,

(Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray) meaning guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom you have bestowed Your grace, that is, the people of guidance, sincerity and obedience to Allah and His Messengers. They are the people who adhere to Allah’s commandments and refrain from committing what He has prohibited. But, help us to avoid the path of those whom Allah is angry with, whose intentions are corrupt, who know the truth, yet deviate from it. Also, help us avoid the path of those who were led astray, who lost the true knowledge and, as a result, are wandering in misguidance, unable to find the correct path. Allah asserted that the two paths He described here are both misguided when He repeated the negation not'. These two paths are the paths of the Christians and Jews, a fact that the believer should beware of so that he avoids them. The path of the believers is knowledge of the truth and abiding by it. In comparison, the Jews abandoned practicing the religion, while the Christians lost the true knowledge. This is why anger’ descended upon the Jews, while being described as `led astray’ is more appropriate of the Christians. Those who know, but avoid implementing the truth, deserve the anger, unlike those who are ignorant. The Christians want to seek the true knowledge, but are unable to find it because they did not seek it from its proper resources.

This is why they were led astray. We should also mention that both the Christians and the Jews have earned the anger and are led astray, but the anger is one of the attributes more particular of the Jews. Allah said about the Jews,

(Those (Jews) who incurred the curse of Allah and His wrath) (5:60).

The attribute that the Christians deserve most is that of being led astray, just as Allah said about them,

(Who went astray before and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the right path) (5:77).

There are several Hadiths and reports from the Salaf on this subject. Imam Ahmad recorded that Adi bin Hatim said, "The horsemen of the Messenger of Allah seized my paternal aunt and some other people. When they brought them to the Messenger of Allah , they were made to stand in line before him. My aunt said, O Messenger of Allah! The supporter is far away, the offspring have stopped coming and I am an old woman, unable to serve. Grant me your favor, may Allah grant you His favor.’ He said, Who is your supporter' She said, Adi bin Hatim.’ He said, The one who ran away from Allah and His Messenger' She said, So, the Prophet freed me.’ When the Prophet came back, there was a man next to him, I think that he was Ali, who said to her, Ask him for a means of transportation.’ She asked the Prophet , and he ordered that she be given an animal.

‘’ Adi then said, "Later on, she came to me and said, He (Muhammad ) has done a favor that your father (who was a generous man) would never have done. So and-so person came to him and he granted him his favor, and so-and-so came to him and he granted him his favor.’ So I went to the Prophet and found that some women and children were gathering with him, so close that I knew that he was not a king like Kisra (King of Persia) or Caesar. He said, O Adi! What made you run away, so that La ilaha illallah is not proclaimed Is there a deity worthy of worship except Allah What made you run away, so that Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greater) is not proclaimed Is there anything Greater than Allah’ I proclaimed my Islam and I saw his face radiate with pleasure and he said:

(Those who have earned the anger are the Jews and those who are led astray are the Christians.)‘’

This Hadith was also collected by At-Tirmidhi who said that it is Hasan Gharib.

Also, when Zayd bin `Amr bin Nufayl went with some of his friends - before Islam - to Ash-Sham seeking the true religion, the Jews said to him, "You will not become a Jew unless you carry a share of the anger of Allah that we have earned.‘’ He said, "I am seeking to escape Allah’s anger.‘’ Also, the Christians said to him, "If you become one of us you will carry a share in Allah’s discontent.‘’ He said, "I cannot bear it.‘’ So he remained in his pure nature and avoided worshipping the idols and the polytheistic practices. He became neither a Jew, nor Christian. As for his companions, they became Christians because they found it more pure than Judaism. Waraqah bin Nawfal was among these people until Allah guided him by the hand of His Prophet, when he was sent as Prophet, and Waraqah believed in the revelation that was sent to the Prophet may Allah be pleased with him.

Paglu bhai your post is like : " The sun rises from the east, sets in the west...wind blows from north..one bird fly in the sky and then the clouds came and it started to rain..................therefore.......it proves...that Mongols are the best!

I was expecting a more factual argument ....that mongols are the best!

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

There is no mention of Hazrat Ali in any of the above verses.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

The Glorious Quran Chapter 2 Verse 207
And among men there is who sells himself (soul ) seeking the pleasure of God; and verily, God is affectionate unto His (faithful) servants.

It is held unanimous by the Scholars of the two Islamic schools, that this verse was revealed for Imam Ali ( as ), when he readily slept in the bed of the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) , when the latter to thewill of God had to migrate from Mecca to Medina. The one who would agree to offer himself instead of the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) who was wanted by the enemy must essentially have
The safety of the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) preferred to his own safety
Implicit faith in the duty of a man to earn the pleasure of the Almighty Allah and His Prophet Muhammad ( pbuh&f ), at any cost, even at the cost of his own life
The courage of surrendering himself willingly with the utmost peace of mind, to sleep under the swords, ready to fall upon him
The confidence and faith in God's protection
And on the night of Hijrah, Allah the glorious revealed to Jibrail and Mikail I have established brotherhood between you two and have ordained the life of one longer than the life of the other. Now, are you willing to make a present of the extra length of life to the other?

But each prefered the longer life for himself. Then Allah revealed

Why not follow the example of Ali ibn Abu Talib. I have established brotherhood between him and Muhammad (pbuh&f). He is now sleeping on the bed of Muhammad in order to save his life by sacrificing his own. Now descend both of you to the earth and protect him from his enemies.

Both the angels descended. Jibrail took up his position near Ali's head and Mikail near his feet.Jibrail was crying out aloud Excellent. Excellent. O son of Abu Talib! There is none like you. Allahis making boast of you before the angels.

And it was on this very occasion that the above verse was revealed.

Perhaps truth is not that easy to understand afterall. If it were then we wouldnt have 17,000+ religions in the world all proclaiming to be with the truth!

Quran is clear in its stance. Trouble is that we are not willing to let go of what is man-made and submit to to the will of Allah and his Prophet.

And if you are looking for "names" in the holy Quran, then good luck. Even our Prophets' name is mentioned only 5 or 6 times in the Quran as compared to Hazrat Isa (as) who is mentioned more than 100 times by name (Rasool Allah is mentioned mostly as a seconed person). Zaid b Harith is the only companion who is mentioned (due to particular reason of strategic importance). Mariam (as) is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran. Only 26 of the 124,000 Prophets are named in Quran yet we must believe in them all.

Thats all from me on this. Insha Allah i will be posting a new verse each day. Tomorrow from the 2nd chapter, Al Baqarah, Insha Allah.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

thank you for your contribution ramesha. You brought a beautiful verse from Sura Baqarah and that is the next Sura we wish to search after Al Fatiha. May Allah reward you.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

[2:58] *And when We said: Go into this township and eat freely of that which is therein, and enter the gate prostrate, and say: "Repentance." We will forgive you your sins and will increase (reward) for the right-doers. *

The city mentioned here may be in the land of Canaan according to Numbers 33:52 of the Old Testament.

As commanded by Allah, Musa (as) gave instructions to the Bani Israil to enter the city through its gate prostrating, and saying: "I seek forgiveness of the Lord and turn repentant unto Him", because therein they would live in peace and harmony with plenty of provisions.

The Holy Prophet (saww) informed his followers, Muslims, about another city with its gate. He said:

I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate.

If anyone wants to come into contact with the divinely endowed wisdom of the Holy Prophet, he should first get familiar with Ali not only by building up close attachment with him but also by paying homage to him with expression of reverence.

In Tafsir Durr al Manthur, Jalaluddin Suyuti quotes Ali ibna abi Talib:

"Our position in Islam to the Muslims is the same as the gate of Hitta was to the Bani Israil."

Those who do good to others get more bounties from Allah (swt).

Excerpt from Tafseer Al Mizan on the above verse:

This verse is in contrast to the preceding three ones. On one side there is a man priding himself in his sins, boasting and self‑exalting, showing the doing of good to people, hiding his hypocrisy behind a mask of charming words; and religion and humanity cannot expect of him anything except ruin and destruction.

On the other side is a man who has sold his soul to Allah, he wants nothing except what Allah wishes; he desires nothing for his self; his honor and strength come only from Allah, and he seeks nothing but the pleasure of Allah. By his presence, religious and worldly affairs re‑acquire their correct shape, the truth is revived, humanity enjoys a happy life and the good effects of Islam reach every one.

This also shows the connection of the end of the verse, and Allah is Affectionate to the servants, with its beginning. Surely, the presence of such a man is a great mercy from Allah to His servants. Had there not been such virtuous people to counteract the designs of those others (whose stock‑in‑trade is hypocrisy and mischief), the structure of religion would have fallen into ruins, and the foundation of righteousness and goodness would have been destroyed. But it is the method chosen by Allah that He removes that wrong by this truth, and repairs the damage inflicted by His enemies with the good spread by His beloved and chosen servants. He has said: And were it not for Allah's repelling some men with others, the earth certainly would be in a state of disorder (2:251); And had there not been Allah's repelling some people by others, certainly would have been pulled down cloisters, and churches, and synagogues, and mosques in which Allah's name is much remembered (22:40); therefore if these disbelievers in it, We have already entrusted it with a people who are not disbelievers in it (6:89). The decadence brought upon the religion and the world by those who love nothing but their own selves cannot be removed except through the good overflowing from those who have sold their souls to Allah, who love nothing except Allah and who desire nothing except that the world and the people of the world may become virtuous.

This deal has been praised by Allah in many verses, one of which is as follows:

Surely Allah has bought from the believers their selves and their properties, for this that theirs be the Garden; they fight in Allah's way, so they slay and are slain; (this is) a promise which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Injil and the Qur’an; and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Therefore, rejoice in the trade that you have transacted; and that is the great achievement (9:111).

TRADITIONS

ash‑Shaykh has narrated in his al-Amali a tradition from 'Ali ibn al‑Husayn (a.s.), about the verse: And among men is he who sells . . . Affectionate to the servants, that he said: "It was revealed about 'Ali (a.s.) when he slept (on the night of hijrah) on the bed of the Messenger of Allah."

The author says: There are innumerable traditions from both Shi'ah and Sunni chains that this verse was revealed about 'Ali concerning his sacrifice on the night of hijrah,. Tafsir al‑burhan gives five of those chains from ath‑Tha'labi and others.

Ibn Marduwayh has narrated from Suhayb that he said: "When I intended to emigrate from Mecca to the Prophet in Medina, the Qurayshees told me, 'O Suhayb! You came to us and you had no wealth. Now you want to emigrate with all this wealth of yours, By God, this can't be.' So I said to them, 'What do you think? Would you leave me if I gave you all my wealth?' They said: 'Yes!' Thereupon I gave them my wealth and they left me. I came out till I reached Medina. This incident was reported to the Prophet and he said: 'Suhayb profited twice.' " [ad‑Durru l-manthur]

The author says: He has narrated it from some other chains also, some of which add: and then the verse was revealed: And among men is he who sells his soul. . .

Some other traditions say that it was revealed about Suhayb and Abu Dharr because they purchased themselves by giving away their properties. But the verse does not say, "he who purchases . . .", it says, he who sells. And the interpretation of the verses does not agree with the meaning of "purchase".

There is a tradition from 'Ali (a.s.) that this verse refers to a man who is killed because of enjoining to do good and forbidding to do bad. [Majma’u l-bayan]

The author says: It is one example of the general meaning of the verse. There is no difficulty in explaining the meaning of the verse in general terms, though it was sent down on a particular occasion for a particular person.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

This is another example of no win situation if logic is used to accept or refute a belief, specially a religious belief.

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

just like the christians say....
Jesus is mentioned in the Quran more times than Muhammad, so Jesus is better....

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

Lets assume Hazrat Ali r.a. is mentioned in the Quran by name.

What happens to the verses regardin Aisha r.a.

Kinda becomes contradictory to Shia beliefs if you ask me

what verses about Aisha? open a new thread and we shall discuss them there Insha Allah.

Once again wahabi group can not hide their hatred that they have in their blood towards Hazrat Ali a.s. They will even deny their books and aalims. sad.....

Re: Quranic verses in praise of Imam Ali (as)

Non of the Sunni Sheikhs confirm that ...Hazrat Ali is mentioned in Quran. Our Sunni Belief is that :

Hazrat Ali was number 4 in the list of Khulfa Rashideen. The list in Superiority is as follows :

  1. Hazrat Abu Baker Razi Ala Talaa Unho 2 Hazrat Omer Razi Ala Talaa Unho
  2. Hazrat Osman Razi Ala Talaa Unho and then comes
  3. Hazrat Ali Razi Ala Talaa Unho

This is collective consensus of All Sunni Imaams. No amount of Matum can make Hazrat Ali number 1 in the list!
