You guys are mixing things up. Some ibadas require that you perform them yourself to get the reward, like Namaz. If another person offers namaz in your place you won’t get the reward. The case with Quran is the same.
The hadith regarding this goes like this: “When a human being dies, all his actions come to an end, except in one of three ways: A continuing act of charity, a useful contribution to knowledge or a God-fearing, dutiful child who prays for him.”
Only prayers, sadqa jariya and propagation of ilm can help the dead in the afterlife. Among the above mentioned sadqa jariya is planting trees. Because the person will be rewarded for all the animals and humans who eat from it or use its shade.
