Quitting smoking

How many of you have quitted smoking and then got back on the habit? How many times you quitted? What was the average period between quitting and starting back on?

The weirdest example I know of is this friend’s older brother who would quit for three years and then get back on. And he’d just quit it cold turkey regardless of how many people continue to smoke around him.

Re: Quitting smoking

I smoke "a lot" I tried every thing out there, the only thing that helped me for a while was zyban, I quit smoking for about 3 months, but then due to work related stress I started again, I’ve been smoking for almost 8 years,

Few different times I tried, i quit for few days, the longest was three months,

Re: Quitting smoking

I quit after 10 years of smoking 2 years ago. It killed my lungs...I couldn't breath, I was coughing for 2 straight years after I quit day in day out.

I have major cravings like crazy whenever I see someone on tv smoking or ppl at my work. Whenever I have cravings I try to busy myself with other stuff...but I end up dreaming about it all night...oh to have a ciggie!!

Don't quit!! It is a nightmare! Smoke an extra one for me today :)

Re: Quitting smoking

I smoked a bit in undergrad, quit for 2 years, then started again. and then just quit cold turkey with no cigarette for 3 years.

since then, i have had an occassional smoke maybe once every few months but thats about it. going on 8 years now

Re: Quitting smoking

^ but after you have that one occassional smoke, dont you want another one?

i already had two with your name on em.

Re: Quitting smoking

no not really, the ocaasional smoke is usually a few puffs anyways, have not smoked a full cigarette in years.

Re: Quitting smoking

But what made you guys start again? It can't be just the stress or cravings. I don't think you get the cravings after few weeks. Yes, TV/Movies and peers play a big role in getting back on but it still takes quite few days/packs to get back on the habit.

I think it's just "memory" of how wonderful it felt smoking that one cig with coffee or drink or after meal etc. That's the time when you have to be a bit mentally strong after you've have quitted.

I know a mid age couple who used to smoke alot. One day they decided to quit and went cold turkey. They have not touched a cig in 20 years now.

Re: Quitting smoking

its also the habit, as soon as i get in the car, i light one up (as they say)and after meals. you cant have a drink without smoke,

mostly its the habit,

furqi, it is hard, i tried everything, BTW happy birthday.

Re: Quitting smoking

Mark Twain said, giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world...I have done it a thousand times...

I quit many times, specially during Ramadans...And promptly after a few months later I would pick it up...

Last time however I prayed Salat-ul-Astaghfar (Prayer of forgiveness) from cigarettes...And that was it...
