Quick foods

We (my sister and me) are in school for much of the day and then studying for the rest so neither of us has much time to cook. I make food whenever I can (usually every three days) but it always runs out very quickly and we mostly go hungry. So I need some recipes for some really easy, quick dishes. Neither of us eat pakoray or kababs or most desi snacks. No pasta ones.

Is there any yummy way of making veggies without steaming, eating them raw, or making saalan out of them?

Re: Quick foods

nothing?

Re: Quick foods

i used to buy those packets of frozen veggie mix, stir fry them just with some salt and black pepper and eat with boiled rice or pita bread and some yoghurt .... it used to be quite tasty

Re: Quick foods

My sister and I have our own place too, what we do is switch off on who cooks. She has her own style and I have my own, so it ends up being pretty interesting.

Baked potatoes, they take no time and you can add all sorts of toppings, I think shahreen even had a thread on that.

Quesadillas, you can add all sorts of stuff to this, different types of cheese, vegetables.

Pre-made pizza bread, all you have to do is spread the sauce on it and add your favorite toppings and than bake it.

Grilled cheese sandwiches.

Salad, I mean there so many types of salad dressings available so you can practically have one for each night of the week.

You can buy huge bags of the frozen French fries, onion rings, or tater tarts. All you have to do is bake them, no need to fry.

Beans, their so versatile, you especially since you don’t eat meat. You can add cheese, sour cream, make burritos, nachos. All sorts of stuff.

My sister and I eat a lot of pasta and rice too, but I guess you don’t really like pasta.

These days I’m so busy that I’m living off of sour dough bread and dill dip.

I’m sure you don’t want to hear a lecture, but no matter how busy you are, try to eat something, don’t deprive your body of the nutrients it needs just because you are busy, it will eventually catch up to you, even though it seems alright for now.

Re: Quick foods

You could grill/roast them, sprinkled with salt and pepper?

Or get some focaccia (sp?) bread and top it with your favourite veggies/leftover chicken, and cheese, and bake yourself a pizza.

Salads are a great too.

Thought of a quick corn recipe -
Get a tin of corn - NOT the creamy kind, drain the corn.

Heat oil, fry zeera, green mirch, add the corn. Sir fry, put a lid on the pan and let the corn cook til it’s kinda toasty or well heated through. When it’s done, garnish with ground black pepper, lots of green dhaniya and lemon juice to taste. This is truly delish.

Re: Quick foods

Thank you guys, those are some great tips Belle. I am not vegetarian, actually I am not the problem, my sister is as she doesn't eat any veggies, cheese, pasta, pizzas etc. She's on a semi-permanent hiatus from all these things so I have to make her meat salan and stuff and she hates to cook so I do the cooking instead. And salan takes a long time to make.

We don't go hungry, I mean to say we don't eat at home much. Which sucks because we end up spending too much money everyday.

Lil Mermaid, I do that with mushroom, chickpeas, red beans etc. Yeah it's yummy!

Well anyway, I am going to go enjoy a juicy grilled salmon now.

Re: Quick foods

Aren’t they always. hehehe

Re: Quick foods

cup-a-noodles baby!

Re: Quick foods

Sarah, almost all meat salaan can also be baked, I've tried and it works :o

You grind, onion, garlic, ginger, tomato with all spices. Add oil and plain yogurt if you like. Fry this mixture for 5 or so min. Clean and cut the meat, pour the mixture over it and bake on medium heat till done.

Other than that, most desi veggies can be cooked in less than 20 min. Grind all masala, fry for 5 min, add your veggies (baingan, gobi, potato etc) mix. Add a lil water, cover and cook on medium low heat for 10 min.

Re: Quick foods

now these are some good ideas.

Irem will try that tonight :)

Re: Quick foods

oh that is difficult. i find it so difficult to fry those packed kebabs / susage or even wrm food. i'd rather sleep hungry than doing so. i love rice so i cant tell you how to make rice... in maximum one hour.

Re: Quick foods

i think im typing sh!t. i need to go get some rest. my calves are hirting so bad  later.

Re: Quick foods

Minerva, the link doesn't work!

sabah, my mom makes sabzi ka salan that way, by baking it. But with gosht, it doesn't absorb the spices does it? Like when cooking normally, I bhoon beef for hours so it gets very tender and the masala becomes thick, I don't think that would happen when baking it?

Re: Quick foods

Sarah, spices are absorbed and masala gets thick as water evaporates. You only need to bhoon the meat for hours if its really old, else it should become tender pretty quickly, else try adding vinegar or a pinch of backing powder.

You could also, marinate meat in different kinds of salan bases and freeze 'em over the weekend. And bake them during the week. I've tried this method too and it works really well.

Re: Quick foods

SarahSplendor - please check out ravage's thread on rice.

Re: Quick foods

You could try cooking double the quantity required and freezing half of it for another time.....that way you can get away with having a couple of days a week where you don't have to cook.

Re: Quick foods

Me and my sister (especially me) hate eating food that has been left over for more than a day. No matter how good it is, it gets wasted unfortunately.
