Hi. I am visiting Paklinks after more than a year. For some reason, I was unable to access the forum for this long. Technical siyappa?
I shifted to Delhi from Assam last year to study Literature at the University of Delhi. Recently I had a conversation which made me wonder about the student culture in Pakistani cities. If someone can help me with these pointers, I would be grateful.
To what degree do boys and girls mingle with each other in colleges? Is it mostly limited to upper class kids?
Are there student colonies in the major cities where students from other parts of the country come to to study? If so, are these mostly hostels or PGs or rented flats?
Given that alcohol consumption is prohibited to an overwhelming majority of the country and hence no bar culture, how often do students get to drink there? And is it common for girls to smoke or/and drink at all?
Are a few cities more student friendly than others? It would appear to me that Karachi would the most popular because of its more urbane and cosmopolitan nature than others. Is it so?
I will ask more question when they occur to me.
Thanks!
No, just curious. :)
oh ok. i've been to Karachi but just for two days as a transit passenger on PIA...it was fun but i didn't get any exposure to the general public.

Mingling beyond limits is not common. Upper class has been trying to cross these limits, but very few institutes are infamous for such activities. Government colleges / universities are conservative in this regard. There have been reports of tussles between open minded students (open in crossing limits) and conservative religious lot (like Jamaiyat) in many institutes. When these things happen 'gehon ke sath ghun bhi pista hai', so people in such institutes (like Islamia college) try to avoid conflict.
There is this Bhai Behn / Ada Adi culture common in some universities as well.**

Mostly hostels for government colleges and universities. YMCA and WMCA also have presence in some cities like Karachi and Lahore. I'm not aware of any student colonies **

Last week there was a news of arrest of some students from Punjab University, Lahore and police found wine bottles in their hostel. Usually its considered taboo to drink publicly ( for both genders) and smoking (in particular for ladies)**

Student friendly in which sense? I think both Karachi and Lahore offer reasonable accommodation and other expenses (food) to students. If you talk of cultural diversity, then Karachi is the place to talk about.**
