Why do you people make such a song and dance about finishing high school?
High school is not an achievement. It doesnt merit a celebration or a ceremony. Here we just shake hands and go our seperate ways. Given you cant be as refined as us, but it is so over the top as to be cringeworthy.
This is my only point of contention with your entire continent.
This was a generic question asked at 4am when a guy isnt at all tired. I assume most desis dont finish HS ( :p ), but seriously, its a cultural norm there. I was fwd'd some ceremony clips from people I know online etc...and granted its a big day as only 25% of US people go on to university, but the sheer scale attributed to the event is mind boggling to my British world view.
I know the UK aims for a crazyily high 50% university enrolement rate (too high, cheapens degrees), not sure what the current figure is. In the US, its about 25% as per Wiki, which is sourced on this occassion. So 1/4 of US ppl achieve more then a GED. Well done.
Because it is considered a rights of passage, an entrace to adulthood (is that a word?) kind of a thing. The only party I know of is Prom, and it is usually done through donations collected through out the 4 years of high school + prom ticket sales. Obviously, schools in richer areas get more donations, so their proms are outrageous.
Don't they have farewell parties in Pakistani schools?
Obviously US will have much much more people, 1/4 of US pop is like 75m, UK's entire pp is 60 million.
I'm not saying the US system is bad or worse, thats not the issue. Just conducting themselves with a sense of decoum is the issue here.
or they can say lighten up and have some fun :)
the university ceremony itself is a very dignified affair for the most part, what happens before or after is a different thing.
