Well, now that you’ve decided to be a member of this website, its only fair we get to ask you some questions.
You employed Indians to sing and compose the songs of Pehla Pehla Pyar - is the CD/casette of your audio actually going to acknowledge them, or are you planning on using fake Pakistani names?
Why didn’t you opt to use Pakistani singers? And Pakistani composers?
^^ I think its only fair to use fake Pakistani names. Ali Azmat/Shahhi never got the credit for doing [almost] the whole soundtrack of Paap. They weren't mentioned in the film OR on the soundtrack. The Indians actually credited their crappy talentless music directors for songs such as Woh Lamhey and Kaho Na Kaho. Sick!
Well there needs to be a detailed reply to your queries. First yes teh music director and all get the credits and they do so in the film as well. By the way the background music was done in Lahore by my cousin and a childhood buddy it is their first ever feature film as a project. One reason I did not take the Pakistani singers is because most of them are not good playback singers and its ok to use them in general situations but when you want them to sound like a character they are limited. Like if you recall Rushdie sounded like Waheed Murad or Sonu nigham sounds perfect on Shah Rukh. Play back singing is a diferent art altogether and more complex than pop singing. Additionally when i started to make my music all borders between India and Pakistan were closed. I could not take my singers over there to the music director. I myself had to fly to Dubai amd the music director coming over there to listen to the tunes and make changes to them. It was a nightmare now it is obviously more simple and easy.
I honestly do not think I should give wrong people the credit if at all any fake credits are to be given then I am very comfortable to give them out to a new comer who is trying to make a career out of it. Any ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can tell you with honesty that Pakistani composers are very good and Indian arrangers are brilliant. Also their current crop of playback singers is exceptionally good.
I was being offered free songs by some well known Pakistani singers but they did not fit my style. I am not into names so lets leave this one at that.
I do however am convinced that with the changing regulations, very soon you shall have all people like me using both talents. Like Reema ahs done, her music director was Amjad Bobby and singers are from across teh border. In such a case the viewer is the ultimate winner as you get the best of both the worlds.
Mr Lucman, I think we've brilliant voices like Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam and some other ones too. It's just a matter of optimally using them. And we can always get better, new singers.... we're a pretty talented lot!
In my opinion, the Indians are have totally run out of talent -- be it at singing or composing musically. I read somewhere one of their music directors, a certain Rajesh Roshan saying that they've been repeating the same singers for the last 20 years now. So it makes sense they're looking on the Pakistani side now. It all comes down believing in yourself, and we just have to somehow find the right people for the right thing sin our movies. The Indian shortcut is convenient, but utilizing Pak talent is the better option in the long run.
Mr Mubasher Lucman,
a warm welcome to the forum.
hope you enjoy taking our naive questions. If you’re uneasy abt anyhting do feel free to contact the mods.
My little Q is;
This film of yours will be out soon, it’s a mainstream commercial ‘masala’ film with romance and heartbreak i believe. Do you plan on making any films on other important issues that surroud us, for instance epics, biographical movies, or movies portraying some imp aspect of life/nation/society/religion etc?
thanks. :k:
I always thought that Tina Sani should be picked up for some playback. She's got a great classical voice, and if Lata can pull it off singing for young heroines, then I'm sure Tina Sani can as well.
By the way, there are so many songs going for Dramas and those singers have great voices - although I am not up to date with them since I dont bother to check credits anymore.
So don't tell me Pakistan doesn't have talent. You might need to send some of the singers over to India to observe how to do it right and pick up some professional tips, but no need to use a predominantly Indian team for the music.
In the last Pakistani film tried to which indian singer ( ok Asha bhosley) sung songs Officially was Sargam. But they had to re-do them with Hadiqa Kayani for God knows what reasons.
The Last movie which had songs by sonu nigam, Udit narayan and some others was *Ghar kab aao gay * songs were good
But on the other hand
Atif's Wo lamhey is a mega hit in india now, and String's song was chosen for sound track of Spiderman last year.
Are we not missing something ?
I know compared to pop, Film music is a different ball game
Ali zafar's song Jugnoun se bhar de anchal was very nice song featured in a movie. His voice is perfectly suitable for movies i guess.
I think Mr. Lucman is talking about "Playback" and not really how good a particular singer is in general. The fact remains that Pakistani singers have great voices in their own right but cannot adapt to be picturized on various foreground actors and actresses. This is in stark contrast to the likes of Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and various other Indian singers who sing to orchestrate and match their voices to the starcast in a movie.
I can understand when our producers want to go abraod for play back singing but I also would like to see new breed of producers to encourage the likes of Ali Zafar, Atif and numerous other singers in local music scene because they got good voices.
Maybe it is because it is Lucman's first film and he needed some security of proven performers rather than trying out good voices from the local scene?
Wow. Well thanks a lot for all those observations. Harris no I am absolutely not uncomfortable with any statements ro queries. I feel they are educated and we must answer them.
I guess a lot fo you have still not understood the concept of playback singing. its really different from pop singing. Plus maybe some missed out my point totally, as I did mention that at the time when I was doing my music I did not have the choice to take my singers to India and so even if I had wanted to I could'nt. But that does not mean I am going back on my initial statement adn I own it totally. As playback singers the Indians haev a lot of variety unlike us. We have more depth in our pop music, be it Fakhir, HAdiqa, Ali HAider, Abrar etc they are primarily pop singers adn best suited for their own performances. Tina Sani is great but how many teen ager girls do you know who would look good with her voice in teh background. Come on. Lets be honest gone are teh days of Mehdi HAssan and all when he would be playback for NAdeem or Shahid on the screen. Today the audience demand fresh voices that match the onscreen talent. Let me give you something that will shock most fo you. The legendary music director of pakistan Mr Robin Gosh (husband of Shabnam) neevr did a number with MAdam Nur Jehan. She used all tactics for him to use her but he refused to use the Melody queen as his playback singer. According to him she sounded more like a woman and not a young girl. He maintained that she was perfect for a Punjabi film which had fat heavy heroines compared to thin or skinny ones in Urdu. I am nto trying to open a pandora box nor trying to embarrass any one in particular. All I am trying to say is that this is a very professional job and cannot be decided just on the basis of a demographic boundary.
I also see a trend that film directors are supposed to be the savior of the cultural and ideoligical theories. I mean every one thinks I am not patriotic just because I use or have used an Indian in teh crew. Its not true. I may be more patriotic than many I do not mean to blow my own trumpet but I love my country and am very proud of it. You must understand that film making is first a business like any other. It must make comemrcial sense for ti to eb sustained. If you can make a textile company with Chinese looms, Danish raw material and Indian spindles then trust me this is exactly liek the same textile mill only its very visible.
I hate to dissappoint most of you but unless we make films that can be a commercially strong product they shall never be culturally rich. After all how we take the responsibility of being the bearers of our ideologies when all our customers adn viewers themselves are the biggest patronisers of Indian films? Are yo tellign me that you will not watch India films, like their stars, enjoy their music??? Just because they are Indian and you are a Pakistani?? I find that very hard to believe. I think you know the value of your money and you will not like to waste your time or money on anything that is sub standard no matetr what geographic origin it came from. Liek wise when we are makign a film we are catering to the same audience and we want to come up with all elements that will be appealing to this target audience. So all shall be included that is justified and if is appealing and makes comemrcial sense. I hoep I have been able to clarify my position to some degree at least!
maybe next time i should answer your questions when i am up and fresh to save you from trying to guess amongst so many spelling mistakes...I am sorry for them..
Harris I should answer your question seperately. Yes this is a commercial film but it has a very strong story line deep rooted into our society. This is not really the story of a boy following a girl but a girl burdened with the responsibility of being the savior of her family and domestic abuse. The story has a strong moral backdrop..infact two of them..A- Do not do to others what you will not be able to handle for yourself. B- A woman will tolerate anything from a man she loves and admires but she will not tolerate another woman even if means sacrificing everything she has.
If you know I have done a lot of work for television and my last film was actually a short film about Mullah Umer and the Talibaan. I went to Afghanistan to shoot it just before the war. It became a big hit and was shown in the UK by ARY digital. After that I came under a lot of pressure (Understandably) but then I decided to make a commercial film. I honestly feel that a good commercial film is and in the real sense a piece of art. TAke for instance Titanic, or Lord Of The Rings etc. They are commercially dynamite yet evry artistic in their making. Yes I would like to make films on more serious subjects as well, like domestic violence, gays, other artistically charged subjects but admit I am mostly driven by relationships subjects and they make me think a lot more than any other.
There are two major subjects that we are considering right now. One is a love story with a strong patriotic backdrop and the other is a story of a man who wants to make sure that the world can respect the woman he loves. (She is a hooker in her previous profession). I dont know if any of them will make it on the screen or not but we are working on them. Then there is this subject which is very commercial and has the backdrop of showbusiness or films in it.
Epics or historicals are absolutely divine but lets face it they require details and budetary allocations that we cant afford at the moment. Maybe if a Hollywood studio will back us then I would like to attempt a try on my hero and ideal Sher Shah Suri....I hope I have answered your questions to your satisfaction sir.
You've made the movie for Rs 40 Million. Have you managed to break even by the amount paid to you by the distributors, or are you like Javeid Shikh planning to distribute the film yourself? Moreover, do you plan to sell the satellite rights for your film? And then, with all the new private channels booming on cable, do you think making feature films is now more feasible than in the past because the film makers can actually think of recovering a decent amount for their films, whether or not a film works at the theatres?
The plotlines of your films seem intriguing. Though the reformed-woman-from-the-red-light-area routine seems to done to death on all these TV plays these days!
Mr. Lucman, let me introduce you to a disease that many of us suffer from. Its called GS addiction. You will be on here all the time. Hours of your day spent online. Beware. :o
Thanks a bunch mr Lucman, your detailed answer was very informative and interesting. Wish you the very best luck for all your upcoming projects :k:
Your previous project, the Mullah Omer film sounds interesting. Is it available on CD/DVD?
