LOL we had much haterade on this topic at work today, especially from one guy who is an Irish American We looked up some figures and saw that the UK public pay anywhere from like 50-180 million pounds a year for the upkeep of the Royal Family
All i can think really is if it is tax payers money spent then what a waste, it must ave cost millions to organise everything. They should have injected into the economy to help uk get out of recession. If its tax money. Does anyone know if it is?
As for watching them I only like to watch if there is a royal wedding, just to be a typical woman and see what she bride is wearing lol
I once watched a show where they showed a royal private train that only gets used 1-2 times a year and the public pay something like £80,000 for this service to the royals. It must be more than that now this was a few years ago, totally shocking and such a waste of money
^ but how can you say that this is a waste of money? what are you comparing to? perhaps they generate three times as much and therefore have a right to such extravagances?
people are all over the place on this answer from anywhere to like 100- 200 million pounds a year.. and then others are saying that's completely inflated and its not nearly that much and even most of that stays in the royal coffers
It is hard to translate what it all is plus the intangibles such as tourism revenues they may generate as well
Patriotism. A lot of Brits can't stand the royal family but I dunno... there's this sort of novelty surrounding them. I can understand why the 70 000 odd people turned up last night though for the concert, that was pretty cool.
The whole funding argument about the Royal Family is amusing to watch. Yes, once you include security and military costs, the Royal Family costs the government and thus the taxpayer about 150-180 million pounds annually.
What people don't mention is that the Royal Family gives the government well over 200 million annually, so the government and tax payer actually profits from this.
The Crown Estate (the corporation that represents the personal property of the King/Queen, derived from conquest) is the biggest property portfolio in the country. Until the time of George III, the King paid his own from the income of its personal property. On George III's coronation, he agreed to give all the Royal income to Parliament in exchange for Parliament paying his expenses.
So if the government revoked this arrangement, stopped paying Royal costs, and instead taxed the Crown Estate like any other corporate entity, the tax payer would actually lose out further.
It was a bank holiday and also a moment of history so of course people wanted to be there. If I didn't have exams next week I would have soooo been there. Watching everything on TV was awesome and an amazing advert for Britain and London.
