Qawwali Night for Mehndi

Another wedding related question…

So I know that it’s pretty much become standard practice for a mehndi to include several choreographed bollywood style dances, followed dancing well into the night to a desi DJ’s bollywood remixes…which is fun and all, but not quite my personal taste (I’m not really a huge bollywood fan). So I was considering having a live qawwali performance after the rasams and dinner, instead of the whole dance competition…and just have a band and regular dancing at the wedding instead.

Do you think that would be boring for Americans and younger guests (teenagers…the only small kids are going to be children of close relatives)?

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

awesome idea!! i wish my mehndi was done in pak...i would have had qawwali night toooooo!!
several of our family members and friends had the liberty to host the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for their weddings... :( and its a wonderful theme!! especially if most of your family/friends/guests are into it...
i would say..have a dholki a couple of days prior to the mehndi...for the youngsters to blow off steam...
then host the mehndi with the qawali theme!
i dont think it would bore anyone :) qawwalis tend to pull in audiences of every nationality/race etc...

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

my family has the same idea for my mehndi . to have live music ... particularly qawali . and i think its a great idea ... even if it will be held in america . guests will enjoy it & always remember this day !

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

i think qawwali would be too loud...for maybe few of the guest (non desi's etc) but if the mehndi is for friends and family thn i guess it would be fun.

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

We're hyderabadi...so we had qawali playing briefly right after the nikah. It was different since we don't really do that thing in the states....but nice. It all depends who your audience is. It was very common where I got married so everyone liked it. But don't know about here. "Youngsters" typically don't like that kind of 'serious' stuff. But in my opinion, it's your function and if you like it and want it - then definately go for it.

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

I think that's a great idea!. I plan to have a mehfil-e-ghazal/mushaira as part of my wedding celebration ... i think it would be a welcome change from the usual choregraphed dances.

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

i went to a mehndi once in karachi a while back.. they did all the rasams and then some dancing with everyone. and afterwards they had the qawali go on for the rest of the night.. i thought it was a lot of fun. being a "young teenager" at the time, i thought it was pretty fun and cool!

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

cool idea.

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

Great idea!! especially if it interests you and your family. As Chanda said--u can have a dholki for the younger set a few days before. My cousin had a ghazal night with an arabic theme---shawarmas being made right then, hot cappuccino, sheeshas, all those pillows on the floor--all the guests enjoyed the event!

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

i love the idea!

non desis would enjoy it aswel! all my non desi friends appreciate qawwali, its really traditional and cultural, most like that

Re: Qawwali Night for Mehndi

great idea! maybe you could also arrange for someone to sing old-school bollywood classics from the 40's and 50's- some of those are very non-current-b'wood and actually quite nice! it would add some variety to the mix.

Doing a qawwali Hyderabadi style @ the Mehndi:
