Dozens of Nepalese migrant labourers have died in Qatar in recent weeks and thousands more are enduring appalling labour abuses, according to a Guardian investigation, raising serious questions about Qatar’s preparations to host the 2022 World Cup.
The published reports says that over 40 workers from Nepal have died in recent weeks, and that workers have been denied free drinking water and some essential human rights.
“This summer, Nepalese workers died at a rate of almost one a day in Qatar, many of them young men who had sudden heart attacks. The investigation found evidence to suggest that thousands of Nepalese, who make up the single largest group of labourers in Qatar, face exploitation and abuses that amount to modern-day slavery, as defined by the International Labour Organisation, during a building binge paving the way for 2022.”
The Guardian stated that it obtained documents from the Nepalese embassy in Doha, stating that “at least 44 workers died between 4 June and 8 August. More than half died of heart attacks, heart failure or workplace accidents.”
The allegations suggest instances of exploitation leading from poor Nepalese villages to Qatari leaders. The overall picture is of one of the richest nations exploiting one of the poorest to get ready for the world’s most popular sporting tournament.
Re: Qatar using modern day slaves for World cup preparation
A few years back I used to read Khaleej times (some times) and the most frequent complaint people had were that they were hired on a different salary but when they landed in Dubai they were given far less. Due to that neither they could send any amount to their families nor save to return back home. Quite a few laborers commit suicide there.

Exactly man and sad fact is that they think they are the most Islamic countries from other countries like Pakistan ! They have too much ego
Re: Qatar using modern day slaves for World cup preparation
the law of immigrant labor in these countries is based on the idea of slavery - the worker is "owned" or given refuge by his/her employer. aka the kafeel system. kuwait has recently said it will abolish this and brings its foreign labor law into the 21st century from the 4th.

There is nothing wrong with the kafeel system ... Modern employment enjoyed in the west is the SAME as slavery of the 7th century of Islam ... For some reason we in the Middle East have reverted employment to a pre-Islamic version of slavery again ...
If a change is required it is in the rights of the employee and accountability of the employer.
employment is slavery ... If you abolish slavery in every form then it means everyone has to be a business/tradesman ...
Re: Qatar using modern day slaves for World cup preparation
Employment/slavery are NOT same. Btw, I’m not surprised that you’re defending this slaves supporting system. Watch the video I posted…that is slavery. Starving children to keep them underweight & strapping them to camels as camel jockeys amounts to crimes against humanity. If there is God I hope they will be judged one day & harshly.
