Qasida Burdah Shareef

Qasida Burdah
(The poem of the scarf)

**History Behind it: **

The writer HAZRAT IMAAM SAALIH SHARA-FUD-DEEN ABU ABDULIAH MUHAMMAD BIN HASAN AL-BUSAIRI R.A had become paralysed. His doctors and physicians gave up all hope of his recovery. Eventually in this state of complete helplessness and despair he composed this poem expressing the grandeur and excellence of Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. Using this as his sole means of asking Allah Ta’alaa to cure him from his illness. He isolated himself in a quiet place one Thursday night and with complete devotion, concentration and sincerity/ began reciting this poem. While reciting it sleep overcame him. He had a vision of Sayyidina. Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. He told Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam of his illness whereupon Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam passed his blessed hand over Imam Busairi’s body. Through the barakat and blessing of Sayyidina, Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam Allah Ta’alaa granted him complete cure from his paralysis. When he awoke he found a scarf or shawl on his body which he had seen Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam place on his paralysed limbs. This resulted in the poem being named “Qasidah Burdah” (The Poem of the Scarf).

In the morning when due to some necessity, he went to the bazaar, a pious dervish greeted him with salaamand requested him to recite the qasidah which he had composed in praise of Rasulullah SAW. The poet said that I have composed many poems in praise of Rasulullah SAW, which one do you wish to hear? The dervish replied: ‘The one which begins with, A-min Tazak-kurin (i.e. Qasidah Burdah)”. Upon this request the poet became wonder struck and said, “I take an oath that no one knows about this poem. Tell me the truth, from whom did you hear about it?” The dervish replied, “I take an oath by Allah that I heard it from you last night when in a dream you had recited it to Rasulullah SAW, whereupon Rasulullah SAW became attentive towards you and because of its blessings Allah granted you complete cure from your ailment”.

When the poet gave this poem to the dervish his secret became known to all the people and its barakat and blessings too became general for all.

Q.) I wanted to know if the Burdah Shareef by Imam Busairi is okay to read. I’ve heard some people say it’s bidah due to some of the verses, but others say it’s for the love of Prophet . Please let me know. [Sara]

A.) Yes, it is permissible to read Qaseedah Burdah as the verses merely portray the immense love of the author for Rasulullah .

However, this in no way can compare to the recitation of the noble Qur’an which is of paramount importance. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best

More to read here, no point in repeating

Re: Qasida Burdah Shareef

"When the poet gave this poem to the dervish his secret became known to all the people and its barakat and blessings too became general for all."

what does that mean?

Re: Qasida Burdah Shareef

It means it wasn't just his poem it was shared with the general populace of the time, and thus till today its recited in praise of the Prophet pbuh.

Re: Qasida Burdah Shareef

Its a beautiful poem but i doubt that it is more effective as Dua than the Durood Sharif.

Peace All

Personally I'm in two minds with the Burda Sharif topic. I pay attention to the words of the poem and understand it for it's poetic purpose and do not by any means apply it as a literal piece of work. It is a wonderful poem.

However, I feel it is a dangerous poem in that it is misleading to those who take it literally. Literal-taking supporters of it can go astray and literal-taking rejectors of it can push it's correct understanding supporters in to a position of marginalisation.

I am not happy with the story it comes with, there is too much mythology attached and surrounding it. That makes the possible supporters of it move further away from it.

The poem of the scarf is wrapped in a shroud!

The famous Mamluke minister Ibn Hinna, who served under the legendry sultan, Barbys, took Imam al-Busiri under his patronage and freed him to write his poems in material security. However, art often suffers when the artist is freed from suffering, and comes to life when calamities call. His greatest poem would result from a powerful tribulation: he woke up to find he was paralysed; half his body without movement. Suddenly, this man, whose erudition and art had elevated him to the status of prince of poets of his time, was reduced to an invalid unable to rise from his bed. This state of affliction stirred him to write the Burda. Centuries later the poem is still able to move listeners to tears. Imam al-Busiri himself related the experience.

'… I began to contemplate writing a poem in the qasida form, and soon after, I did so as a way of interceding by it with the Messenger of God to God, the Exalted, hoping that he might heal me.

'I was repeating it often, singing it, calling upon God through it, and seeking intercession with it. During that time, while sleepling, I saw the Prophet, upon him and his family be prayers and peace. He wiped over my face with his blessed hand and thrust upon me his cloak. I immediately got up and left my house. I had told no one of my poem nor of anything I had been doing prior to that.

'On the road, I met a fellow spiritual wayfarer, who said to me, “I want you to give me a copy of the poem you wrote in praise of the Prophet, upon him be prayers and peace.”

'I responded, “which one?”

'He said, “The one you wrote during your illness.”

**'He then recited its opening lines saying, “By God, I heard it in a vision last night recited in the presence of God’s messenger, upon him and his family blessing and peace. It greatly pleased the prophet, and I saw him thrust his cloak on the one who wrote it!” **

‘I provided him with a copy, and he began telling others of his vision. Thus its news spread far and wide.’

Imam al-Busiri died in Alexandria, Egypt in the year 1295 CE. His grave is well known and is connected to a large mosque. His poem embellishes its walls. The Burda was also engraved on the Prophet’s mosque in Madina, upon its inhabitant be the best of prayers and peace. There it adorned its walls and reminded believers for centuries before being erased by people who could not comprehend it. There is still one line left that has not been removed:

He is the beloved whose intercession is hoped for
As arms against a host of relentless calamities.

Re: Qasida Burdah Shareef

No ofcourse not.

Ofcourse bro, people can take anything too far. Its like those people who believe that every year on his "birth date" the Prophet pbuh NAOUZUBILLAH walks amongst those who are in the "mehfil".

So it applies to anything, but this is nothing but a poem praising the PRophet pbuh.

Re: Qasida Burdah Shareef

This poem is amazing!! I have one version of it where this guy recites it for 55 minutes!! I listened to it today while waiting for class. Just get's you in the moood.
