I really need some help from anyone who can. My mom is seriously overweight and it has started having some adverse repercussions on her health. I am getting very worried about her and am trying to help her to lose weight, which she is willing to do.
The only thing is, she has been born and bread on roti and finds it very difficult to eat the steamed vegetable ‘garbage’ that I try and serve up.
I can sympathise with her, as rich desi food is all she has ever eaten and at her age (52) she’s finding it difficult to alter the taste of her palete.
Can anyone provide recipes for healthy food with a desi twist that might be a good way to start weaning her onto a healthier diet? Any ideas will be appreciated
The first thing is that its already Ramazan...should lose some weight...
Secondly...you should try to convince you mom about the nutritional value of the steamed veggies...plus you can make and add some sauce to those veggies you steam...Pakistani style to bring it to her taste...give it a try... :)
there are so many yummy healthy foods out there. she doesnt have to just rely on steamed veggies to lose weight. i agree with all the others. get her professional help. so the doctor can pinpoint her cholesterol, weight BMI etc etc.
dont take a "u shouldnt eat xyz" approach...rather take a "u should be eating more of abc" approach...

Thanks!
small changes.. cook with olive oil (start with pomace and then gradually work ur way up to extra virgin), and gradually replace whtie atta with whole wheat :)
this is really sweet of you to be so concerned and willing to help ur mom. Maybe you both can change your eating diet, so she won't feel like she has to do this alone. It's definitely easier to have someone with you, and to push you along. Speaking to a doctor or dietician isn't a bad idea either. good luck!
my mum was in the same situatio and it was will power knowing that changes needed to be made, cutting down on red meat, portion control, more vegetables, whole grains instead of processed grains, significant decrease in sugar consumption first step was drinking unsweetened chai etc..
not only did she lose weight but is overall much healthier.
she did some workarounds like vegetarian baked shammi kababs, lightly fried before serving with minimal oil etc/
aren't roti's ok as our roti is usually mad from whole wheat flour anyhow? Portion control, and minimize amount of oil in salen. See if you can have her still eat roti but a little less, and add flavored vegetables to her diet...or as a snack on raw veggies and maybe low fa dip? Also seeif you can join and her and get her to start walking...then speed walking...for a longer time each day? Invest in a treadmill...exercise always helps with a well balanced diet.
I agree Sara - I think 'gently does it' is gonna have to be the approach. Poor mom, can't expect her to go from rich flavoursome foods to carrotsticks overnight!
I like the olive oil idea - and I bought her some today so will give it a go :)
Again a good idea - I will get the family to lead by example and encourage her by giving her company in eating healthily - and we’ll all benefit from it in the long run.
Yeah, I am concerend - only have one ammijaan and it hurts to see her struggle when I know there’s a better way

Thanks Fraudz, it's really encouraging to know that it can be done...I have told her about not taking sugar in tea as an initial step and she's willing to try :) Also the kebab idea sounds good too!
She's gonna need alot of support...will make sure I'm there :)
awwww.inshallah im sure she will be better it’s difficult to dicipline people you love most but it is good u have taken action and realised at a changable time.
