I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions on where I would be able to find a tawa (one for making roti’s). I searched in a lot of desi stores, but they’re all crappy ones they got there.
I was looking for a store in the Toronto/GTA region that would sell something that’s actually worth buying.
Or has anyone come across anything other than a tawa that can be used to make rotis? I know the new style is the frying pan looking tawa, but I’m not sure it would be the best. Does anyone have any experience using those ones?
a real tawa is the real thing…
I have one of those ceramic cook tops and when I tried using the nonstick tawa I once used to have it never worked for me…because the tava was like concave shaped(the way its supposed to be) and since there was no actual flame underneath,it never heated well…just a tiny spot in the middle where it actually came in contact with the cooktop…
then someone told me try those flat cast iron thing…it heats well so retains the temp,it took a while for me to understand what the right temp was because in the beggining I used to burn rotis…but now they are fine
My point:the usual tawa doesn’t seem to work on ceramic cook tops so if u have one of those…you might wanna try sth else…
no even if you have a THICK frying pan, it still doesn’t taste right. Infact a non-stick frying pan gives roti that yellowish colour, which I have never seen in roti’s made on real TAWA. sigh… may be I am just a chatoora. :hinna:
I've got an iron tawaa by Mittal.. LOVE it..! Really good quality..! Bought at an Indian store in UK long time ago.. They had a huuuge collection of tawaa's by price, size, weight and brand..
Another thing I've noticed it that weight of a tawa matters too.. Like my chachi has a light weight aluminium frying pan and it also works, but it doesnt become the roti like the nice fluffy roti.. Her roti's always taste different.. Another friend of mine has a light weight iron tawaa.. And her roti's burn quicker on her tawaa.. My tawaa is heavier than hers.. She used my tawaa a few times and now she bought the same iron tawaa..
chips - i don't have a ceramic stove top, just got the regular one. have you ever used the frying pan tawa before? how's your experience been with it?
TLK - it's not a bad idea, but i wonder if the cookware they use would be able to make the nice and fluffy rotis. because their tortillas are mostly just flat..and don't have that 'poof' to them
JP - yeah..brampton's just sooo far away :p any suggestions on which stores would have the best ones?
LDH - so the heavier the tawa, the better it is? hmm..interesting. how much did you get yours for?
i never liked the heavy one's cause ..well, i just never liked 'em :p the one my mom's got is nice and light, but she's got the upside down one..and then has another one to make parathas on.
Mirch - thanks for the links..i'll take a look at them, although I would like touching it and weighing it before I buy something. any suggestions? :p

Yep, take a trip to England , then that tawa will cost you somewhere between 1000 to 5000 dollars depending on cost of airline ticket , hotel charges and the length of your trip. :p
