Purchasing a Tawa

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions on where I would be able to find a tawa (one for making roti’s). I searched in a lot of desi stores, but they’re all crappy ones they got there.

I was looking for a store in the Toronto/GTA region that would sell something that’s actually worth buying.

Or has anyone come across anything other than a tawa that can be used to make rotis? I know the new style is the frying pan looking tawa, but I’m not sure it would be the best. Does anyone have any experience using those ones?

Any suggestions would be appreciated! =)

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

^ I have used plenty of "fry" pans as tawa - but the real tawa is a real tawa definitely!!! lol

The true tawa I have now is obviously parceled along with relatives. They don't have that here.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

Yeah, and I don't think those frying pans actually make those nice fluffy rotis :p

And I got no one back home to ask a tawa from..so I have to resort to looking around here.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

^just go online and do an ebay India search! They have EVERYTHING.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

a real tawa is the real thing…
I have one of those ceramic cook tops and when I tried using the nonstick tawa I once used to have it never worked for me…because the tava was like concave shaped(the way its supposed to be) and since there was no actual flame underneath,it never heated well…just a tiny spot in the middle where it actually came in contact with the cooktop…
then someone told me try those flat cast iron thing…it heats well so retains the temp,it took a while for me to understand what the right temp was because in the beggining I used to burn rotis…but now they are fine
My point:the usual tawa doesn’t seem to work on ceramic cook tops so if u have one of those…you might wanna try sth else…

This is what I am talking about:

I was going to suggest same thing.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

jst make sure to buy one that has a “safeed lakeer” on the back :hehe:

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

Try Mexican and Arabic stores .. I am sure they use the same type for Tortilla and Lavash ..

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

smilestar, Brampton has plenty of stores carrying tawas.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

i want a tawwa too .. i cant find one anywhere here in egypt

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

My wife bought one from a local Indian store.

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

question, why Roti/paratha made on a frying pan doesn't taste like the one made on real tawa!

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

Difference of curvature and thickness of tawa vs Frying pan ..

plus actual reason is your chatoraa pun

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

no even if you have a THICK frying pan, it still doesn’t taste right. Infact a non-stick frying pan gives roti that yellowish colour, which I have never seen in roti’s made on real TAWA. sigh… may be I am just a chatoora. :hinna:

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

Tawaa is made of cast Iron (at least the real ones). Frying pans of Aluminum. The heat spread is different.

I've got an iron tawaa by Mittal.. LOVE it..! Really good quality..! Bought at an Indian store in UK long time ago.. They had a huuuge collection of tawaa's by price, size, weight and brand..

Another thing I've noticed it that weight of a tawa matters too.. Like my chachi has a light weight aluminium frying pan and it also works, but it doesnt become the roti like the nice fluffy roti.. Her roti's always taste different.. Another friend of mine has a light weight iron tawaa.. And her roti's burn quicker on her tawaa.. My tawaa is heavier than hers.. She used my tawaa a few times and now she bought the same iron tawaa..

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

^ true the heavier the better!

Re: Purchasing a Tawa

wow..that's for all your replies!

chips - i don't have a ceramic stove top, just got the regular one. have you ever used the frying pan tawa before? how's your experience been with it?

TLK - it's not a bad idea, but i wonder if the cookware they use would be able to make the nice and fluffy rotis. because their tortillas are mostly just flat..and don't have that 'poof' to them

JP - yeah..brampton's just sooo far away :p any suggestions on which stores would have the best ones?

LDH - so the heavier the tawa, the better it is? hmm..interesting. how much did you get yours for?
i never liked the heavy one's cause ..well, i just never liked 'em :p the one my mom's got is nice and light, but she's got the upside down one..and then has another one to make parathas on.

Mirch - thanks for the links..i'll take a look at them, although I would like touching it and weighing it before I buy something. any suggestions? :p

Yep, take a trip to England , then that tawa will cost you somewhere between 1000 to 5000 dollars depending on cost of airline ticket , hotel charges and the length of your trip. :p
