okay i’ll modify this for the resident guwayyas/taballa bajaos of gupshup…from my experience i have not met a single Ehle-zaban refer to signers as ‘marasis’ and ‘kunjars’, guwayya etc is gnerally used…its only been Na-ehle-zaban lahoris and punjabis who are most fond of separating themselves from the profession based casts of marasi and kunjar, which is interestingly used to denote every ochi act, done by a non-mairasi, under the sun…5abi u were right its not an urdu word, i was just being very untypically Ehle-Zaban when i said it…
5Abi… whatever kind is wanted… your question is like asking what kinda prayers do Nimazis perform… It is what is opt for the time, and what is being paid for. It’s a “profession”, if i pay for a Khatak, I want to see Khatak, else I would demand my money back. If I pay to see KuchapuRi or Odissi, and I get ManipuRi instead, I would demand my money back.
I have read My Feudal Lord and the book that came after that (can't recall the name)., both by Tahmina.
Even though both books say the author name is Tahmina Khar, there is a remarkable difference between the two as far as the writing style is concerned..
My Feudal Lord is writted in a very fluent english. There are hardly any jerks, and no where it is felt that the author is haveing a hard time in saying what she wants to say. It seems like the books has been written by a professional writer.
The second books by Tahmina is very painful to read. I could not read beyond a few pages due to bad english. The author did not know how to put plainly what she wanted.
She recieved professional help via two writers in writing My Feudal Lord, its says so in the acknowledgements section.
William and Marilyn Hoffer, William wrote a book called Midnight Express.
MM, when you're done with Tahmina read Fouzia Saeed's "Taboo!: The Hidden Culture of a Red Light Area"
She explains all these casts etc in detail and the book is really good without bollywood type masala. Actually drop Tahmia and read Fouzia, Tahmina is just blah blah, waste of lots of words, IMHO.
