i was reading “My Feudal Lord” last night and came across a word which i didnt recognise, this happens a lot when it comes to punjabi or urdu words, i never know if the word is a punjabi word or an urdu word…and i dont even know what this word means. Anyway, i thought it would be a really good idea if you guys could help me with this whole “urdu or punjabi” word buisness…it stresses me out!
“marasi” - iv used this word but i don’t know what it means and in which context it can be used? is it a masculine or feminine word? single or plural? I hope its not a swear word.
Il think of more words when i have another blonde moment.
marasi's are singers and dancers, i've heard it refered to as a caste also (low caste). Many tend to be gay or cross-dressers. As far as I know its a punjabi word.
sheesh, not really a professional singer in a straightforward sense....its basically in pakistan u have to be low class to take up singing as a profession...... all i meant, not a normal person who sings but someone who does it for his living.
you have to be low caste to take up singing? so ali zafar, and junoon and all the other pakistani singers i dont know about are low caste? wow...learn something weird everyday!
5abi what does kunjar mean? im pretty sure its a swear word though...is it punjabi or urdu?
5abi dont lie to me love, the "D" word means pimp... does kunjar means pimp too? whats feminine kunjar?i should stop saying kunjar...my daddi will kill me for swearing in punjabi
u know mohabbat i wud love to explain but i think u know what i mean, so i wont argue beyond this....well its an old idea, this whole thing about looking down on singers.......ali zafar and the likes koa abhi sirf 30 saal hi huai hain......there was no pop singing in pak before 80s......there werent any educated ppl in this market before alamgir and the likes.......there must have been a reason for it no?
I dont think its for singers in general. I think Marasi’s in itself have their own culture. Like in the old days in the pind, anytime a baby was born, marasis would sing for a long life for the newborn. I always picture them as circus people or gypsys
ghuLail i get u now love...hmmm intresting though...singing is low caste..explains the spice girls
5abi iv always wanted to know what "Heera Mandi" is...im slightly naive when it comes to pakistani culture and such. Is it like whore houses and rooftop dancers? which culture is this by the way? indain or pak? and whats this book ur talking about?
Mirasi is a profession based cast. The profession is singing. In punjabi, it is not a gali… Some low level Ehle-Zaban might think of it as a gali… Ehle-Zaban in Punjabi means those who lick.
