Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
In 1951 what was the proportion of non muslims in the areas constituting Pakistan now?

Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
I repeat for the umpteenth time -
Hindu population in 1951 -22% (Pak), 22% (Bangladesh) Hindu population today -1.7% (Pak), 9.2% (Bangladesh)
Even if you look at Pak & BD combined, the percentage of Hindus has gone down.
If we consider your maths, then the hindus should have been 45 % of Pakistan's population in 1951, as BD and Pakistan both had almost the same populations.

22% Hindus (not sure about other minorities)

No, this is based on 1951 population of current Pak and current BD. So the population of combined Pak was also 22%.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
22% Hindus (not sure about other minorities)
ok and how were they distributed province wise?

Does not matter. I am talking about Pakistan in total. Inter-province movement is immaterial to this discussion and only serves to confuse the issue.

Bhai jaan you mentioned in post 80...

Add the values for Hindu population in Bangladesh and Pakistan, that shows a much more harrowing situation. The hindus have reduced from 44 % in 1951 to 1.7 % now. Hope this solves your issue.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
:smack: Obviously you are not a Math major…
Why are you adding the percentages ? They are based on different denominators.
In 1951, Hindus constituted 22% of the Pakistani population **(including the modern day Bangladesh; **;[SUP][3]](Hinduism in Pakistan - Wikipedia)[/SUP][SUP][4]](Hinduism in Pakistan - Wikipedia)[/SUP] Today, the share of Hindus is down to 1.7 percent in Pakistan,[SUP][5]](Hinduism in Pakistan - Wikipedia)[/SUP] and 9.2 percent in Bangladesh[SUP][6]](Hinduism in Pakistan - Wikipedia)[/SUP] (In 1951, Bangladesh alone had 22% Hindu population).[SUP][7]](Hinduism in Pakistan - Wikipedia)[/SUP]

how can you get to the bottom of the issue without considering the impact of the immigration of 10-15 million people across the borders in 1947? Pakistan's population was much smaller than India, hence the resultant impact naturally would have been much more.

*Mere bhai, * thats why I am starting with 1951 (after the partition). The 10-15 million people that you talk about had already crossed the borders by then.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
Do you see the “including Bangladesh” in this article? How can Bangladesh have 22 %, and Pakistan+Bangladesh also have 22 %? Please let me know of some formula to do this math?
The fact is in 1951, Bangladesh had around 23 % minorities and Pakistan had 3 %.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction

Yes, that's what I copied in red. its the 4th paragraph down in that page.
The fact is in 1951, Bangladesh had around 23 % minorities and Pakistan had 3 %.
Did you just make that up ? Can you point me to a link that shows that ?
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
I have already posted that in post 36 but obviously you overlooked it (see the last paragraph of the page that will open up).
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
So one of those reports is false. And I would trust Wikipedia more than Ian Talbot quoting without source.
Anyways, explain this -
BBC News - Pakistani Hindu pilgrims allowed to cross into India after detention
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
Common sense is that Punjab forms over 55 percent of present Pakistan's population, once populations were swapped there to get to the magical figure of 22 % (in Pakistan) we needed around 45 % minorities in the remaining three provinces which was not the case.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
You are free to accept Wikipedia, and accept my condolences in the reduction of minorities from 44 % in 1951 to 1.7 now. Thanks…

Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
Lets not compare Hindu-Muslim riots in India to persecution of minorities in Pakistan. Not sure how many Indian Muslims you know, but might help to talk to one to understand how Muslims are treated in India.
Shiv Sena and likes say much about the status of Muslims in Indian society before bigots. A few bigots don't represent society is the point, I'm trying to convey through all this thread.

Shiv Sena is largely irrelevant in the broader Indian context. And I have not heard of any Muslim leaving India in fear of persecution. Our constitution gives all minorities equal rights.
So I am still not sure what your point was.
Re: Punjabi Hindus: forlorn and on the path to extinction
I didn’t want to come to this point. But what does Indian constitution says about the rights of Kashmiri Muslims? Didn’t they convert to minority over the period? Where did they migrate?

I again say I’m not in favor of any persecution on the name of religion, but I hate a propaganda making a country’s overall image on stake due to acts of certain incidents by few groups.
