Punjab gets 4,000 cusecs more water from Indus

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab has succeeded in getting 4,000 cusecs of water more from the Indus river, despite the fact that the big federating unit has exhausted its share from the Indus arm, a senior official told The News.
The Punjab Irrigation and Power Department (PIPD) demanded more water from the Indus zone some days back, saying it had not utilised its share from Indus river during the ongoing Rabi season fully. The water regulator refused to meet the demand of the Punjab on the plea that the province had fully utilised it share of water and wrote to Water and Power ministry for its guidance.
Later the Punjab said some of its wheat-cultivated areas remained rain-deficient and for maturing of the crop there, the province needed more water from the Indus river. The official said the Irsa on Monday convened a meeting to resolve this issue and with consultation of the Punjab and Sindh, it was decided that Punjab would be given 4,000 cusecs water from the Indus zone till further orders, while in turn Sindh be provided with 3,500 cusecs of water from the Jehlum-Chenab zone downstream Punjanad headwork.
The official said that the Irsa worked out 500 cusecs line losses that Sindh was to sustain from the release 3,500 cusecs. Therefore, 3,000 cusecs of water would reach the Guddu barrage after two days of its release.
The Irsa’s statement issued later said that some discrepancy was found regarding the shortages experienced by the Punjab and Sindh. The issue was referred to Punjab’s irrigation authorities.
They informed the meeting that due to insufficient rains there was some demand of water on Indus main stem as the standing wheat crop was at maturity stage. The official said that the Irsa had convened a meeting of its technical committee to prepare a draft about the water availability for next Kharif season that was to start from April 1, 2006, for approval of the advisory committee.
The official said that water would be available abundantly keeping in view the massive snowfall in the catchments areas of the Indus and Jehlum and Chenab rivers. The ongoing inflow of water is also indicating that required water will be available in the country during Kharif season.

This is why most Punjabis love the current setup in Pakistan. It allows their "biradari" sytem to flourish and keep everyone else down. They can get away with stealing water from others and the issue will disappear from newspapers within a couple of days, but make the lives of farmers in Sindh even more difficult.

I donno who this Khalid Mustafa is but the article has no basis, seriously. Some ppl just want to create trouble and want ppl to stay in trouble.. This water sharing has been on for many years and every time Punjab gets blame for stealing Sindh's water. We dont have a federal setup and we shud learn to respect each other.

Offcourse when you steal the water then it will be.
And tmx, don't come and complain when people get fed up enough and an insurgency starts in sindh again. Pakr pakr ke lugaya tera dugga ki bhund just like bangalis and wazirs / BLA now!! :D
Then don't come and complain "oh weeeeeee, sanu sindhi is a traaatar,, only poonjabi good paki".

Why do you think there is this water-sharing formula in the 1st place?
Now it truly makes sense as why bengalis and pretty much all non-punjabis (now bla and waziris but even mouhajirs) don’t want to live in stinky daal khor punjabistan!
Lagtqa hai poonjabi bhungees will actually succeed in breaking up this country!

I guess Paki establishment never thought that as patriotic as bengalis were that there would be bangladesh one day, did it?

I haven't read anyone calling him that.
Anyways, he says things that people don't want to hear, that they don't want to believe, which is why you will jump on the band wagon to condemn him, even when he is right.
