Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book - thenews.com.pk

**ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has excluded several key subjects from the fresh 10th class Urdu text book edition published in February 2013 which is now being marketed for new students of matric.

These subjects include ‘Islamic ideology of Pakistan’ and ‘Hazrat Umar (RA)- a Great Administrator’ besides removing persuasive Islam-related poems of even poets like Allama Iqbal. On the poetry side, all the Islamic poems including ‘Rabbe Kainaat’ of Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali, ‘Mohsin-e-Insaniat (PBUH)’ (the Saviour of Humanity) by Mahirul Qadri, ‘Tulu-e-Islam’ (the rise of Islam) of Allama Iqbal, ‘Siddiq (RA)’ on Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA) by Allama Iqbal, ‘Shaan-e-Taqwa’ (which is against drinking) by Allama Iqbal etc have also been removed in the new text book.

**While the title page of the book contains the picture of Allama Iqbal, it does not contain any poem of the great poet of Islam and Pakistan.

The new edition of the ‘Urdu compulsory for 10th class’ does not include the very first chapter of the earlier edition’s prose i.e ‘Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA)- a great administrator’ by Allama Shibli Naumani. The new text book’s first chapter is an essay on writer ‘Mirza Muhammad Saeed’ written by Shahid Ahmad Dehlvi.

The second chapter in the old edition was on ‘Ideology of Pakistan’ written by Dr Ghulam Mustafa Khan. This important chapter highlighted the basis for the creation of Pakistan and endorsed that the country was created in the name of Islam, to make it an Islamic state, has been replaced by a new chapter on ‘Princess of Paristan’ (Paristan ki shahzadi) written by Ashraf Saboohi.

The third chapter of the old edition of the 10th class text book was ‘Musaddas-e-Hali’ written by Moulvi Abdul Haq. This chapter narrates how a Muslim poet in the 19th century influenced the hearts and minds of the Muslims. It has now been replaced by a writing of Dr Waheed Qureshi on ‘Eidul Fitr in Urdu Literature’ (Urdu Adab main Eidul Fitr).

Similarly the chapters like ‘Sacrifice’ (Eisaar) by Deputy Nazir Ahmad, which has a great lesson for children, has been removed from the new 10th class text book. This chapter gives the lesson of how the affluent should help the poor. The story is about a child, who distributed his Eidi to a poor family.

Another important chapter of the old book ‘Fatima binte (daughter of) Abdullah’ written by Mirza Adeeb has also disappeared from the new Urdu compulsory of class 10 for Punjab students. This story was about a 10-year old daughter of an Arab leader Abdullah. The story is about Jihad and the young Muslim girl’s urge to help the Muslim Mujahideen in Jihad against un-Islamic forces. The girl was martyred and did her parents proud.

This incident has such an importance that even Allama Muhammad Iqbal had also written a poem on this young girl with the title ‘Fatima binte Abdullah’. Allama presented her as a role model for Muslim youth.

A chapter Nam Dev Mali was, instead, included in the book that was about an expert Hindu gardener who was killed when attacked and stung by honey bees. The writer of this short story Maulvi Abdul Haq described the death of the expert Hindu gardener as ‘having embraced Shahadat (martyrdom)’.

One of the chapters in the old edition was about ‘The deprived of inheritance’ (Mahroom-e-Virasat) by Allama Rashidul Khairi has also been excluded. This chapter focused on the un-Islamic tradition of depriving women of inheritance.

One chapter called ‘Travelling is the key to success’ (Safar Kamiabi ki Kunji hay) written by Moulana Abdul Haleem Sharar, a great Urdu writer, has also been removed. It covered the adventures, jihad, travelling etc of the great Muslim leaders.

A chapter on the ‘words of poets’ (Shaeron ki batain) in the old book has also been removed.

The chapter presented different aspects particularly self respect of Muslim poets.

On the poetry side all the Islamic poems including ‘Rabe Kainaat’ of Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali, Tulu-e-Islam of Allama Iqbal, ‘Mohsin-e-Insaniat’ of Mahirul Qadri, ‘Siddiq (RA) on Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA) by Allama Iqbal, ‘Shaan-e-Taqwa’ (which is against drinking) by Allama Iqbal etc have also been removed in the new text book.

Two ghazals of Khawaja Mir Dard on Islamic Sufism and two ghazals of Mirza Ghalib have also been removed from the new text. Poetry of a Indian poet Firaq Gorakhpuri has been included in the text book and the poet is presented as a hero awarded by the Indian and Russian governments.

While the title page of the book contains the picture of Allama Iqbal, it does not contain any poem of the great poet of Islam and Pakistan. Excluding extremely impressive Islamic poetry, the new text book, however starts with a Hamd (praise of Almighty Allah) and Naat (praise of Hazrat Muhammad — PBUH).

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Who is the Education Minister of Punjab?

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

The timing is interesting as well, the Punjab Government completed its tenure with the same course. By changing it in the last days, are they giving some signals to their foreign backers?

It makes sense to remove some of the chapters related to Jehad, but it seems they have removed all the articles which had something to do with the religion.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

so what, nobody bothers to understand or remember whats in islamiat course.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Its not the role of public education to educate children on matters of faith. Such matter should be left to parents, madrassas, and ulema. Govt schools should focus on math, science, and general social sciences. There is no dearth of sources in Pakistan to learn about Islam, but very few places of quality to teach math and science.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Shahbaz sharif has included the topics back into the books an ordered an enquiry as to who omitted them in the first place. An enquiry should be held against the education minister. :@:

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Agreed to most of your post save the bolded part. Currently if you want to study Islamic teaching in Pakistan, either you go to a madrasah or attend maulana Tariq jamils jalsas. How is that providing quality Islamic education and teaching to the masses? The semi-decent source of Islamic teaching left were the official textbooks. It really scares me that people will now either get a hand me down version of Islam in Pakistan or learn whatever from Sheikh Google

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

will somebody care to name the minister? is Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman the education minister of punjab

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

I think the basic tenents of Islamic belief, those things which are generally taught in Islamiyaat are also taught proficiently enough in most madrassas. Beyond the basics, if your looking for Islamic philosophy, jurisprudence etc, well many universities offer that i believe. Still. a lack of quality Islamic education should be the concern of the Ulema, not the govt, which itself probably turns to the same Ulema to establish its standards. Everyone has their partcular brand of Islam they prefer, their particular view on particular issues. Better to allow parents to judge the merits of various institutions and individuals on their own, instead of relying on the govt to subject their children to a one shoe fits all ideology.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

For most of the tenure Shahbaz Sharif himself was the Minister of Education. During the last one year he has handed over a few ministries but its not really clear which ones he still had with himself (Health was with him for sure). Mian Mujataba Shuaja ur Rehman was the minister of School Education and Higher Education.

Now we are going to have a third world secular country that only came to existence because of the desire of people to have a muslim country. They could have stayed being India and be secular. I guess they might as well, our culture is already more hindu/indian than islamic. Look at our weddings, the songs, the movies, the heroes your daughters grow up admiring (trust me they are not muhammed ibn Qasim and salahudin..Salman khan anyone?) So i guess it really doesn’t make much difference if they take out Ilaama iqbal and islamic heroes out of the books. At least when the azab of allah comes, we won’t have to wonder why. We already teach kids evolution in pakistan, and yet there are schools in USA where it is not taught. So a country created for Islam propagates atheism and evolution, and now is slowly taking out whatever islamic education is left in the system. No wonder, the country is so prosperous and full of barkut.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

There is no Islamic culture. Islam is composed of many cultures.

And Pakistan was founded not for the sake of Islam, but for Muslims, as a Muslims majority homeland. Something that could not be gained by being a part of India.

There are other countries where the govt is secular but there is a Muslim majority, and no where is Islam under threat or Muslims prevented from practicing their faith. The good name of Islam is tarnished far more often in countries claiming to be “Islamic” then those claiming to be secular. Infact, I would argue that Islam is better served and more faithfully followed in countries that dont label themselves as such.

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Someone who says there is no Islamic culture must be living under a rock. The sound of the adhan in 5x a day is part of the Islamic culture/lifestyle..so is the young kids grabbing their saparas in the morning and going to the masjid, so is men dressing and showering to get ready for friday..so is the haqiqa of every new born, and the list can go on and on.. I mean these are things that are distinctly Islamic..and they are a part of our culture not because it is Pakistani culture, but because it's Islamic culture.. otherwise all we have is Hindu culture.. so you are saying that Millions of muslims got killed, created a country for muslims, but we should not call it an Islamic country? LOL..that makes tons of sense..

Re: Punjab excludes Islamic subjects from Matric book

Good decision

social studies should be excluded as well. You should be taught religion, geography, urdu & history subjects etc. upto class 8 only or upto the age of 14 or 15

School children in Pakistan are burdened with too much home work (& by heavy school bags) as it is. In Britain for instance most learning occurs in the class room and kids get very little home work

From matriculation onwards it should be all about technical subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology etc.) and English (whether we like it or not it is the only international language)
